Three dollars and 63 cents
John Updike, prize-winning writer, dead at age 76 I wasn't a huge fan of his writing, be he was undeniably a powerful force in Twentieth Century American lit.

Oil Can Boyd
I really enjoyed all four of the Rabbit books.
LouieB
I bought a paperback copy of Rabbitt Run when I was a mere lad and read it and I am sure I didn't really understand a word of it. I suppose it would be worthwhile to read all four books now that I am older. I always enjoyed Updike's articles in the New Yorker as well, particularly the book reviews. explodo
I have a real love hate relationship with him. Short stories, Rabbit books, some of his criticism and essays are all gold. Books like Terrorist? Less so. Still, as 3 dollars said, an undeniable force. It always sucks to lose someone of his stature. I didn't even know he had lung cancer. I figured he was well since his stuff appears in virtually every single New Yorker.
owl
Pigeon Feathers is a great book, but as Gardner said, "John Updike doesn
moxiebean
Like most folks around here I haven't kept up with his literary output (my bookshelves are lined with scores of Updike books that I know I'll never read), mostly because reading his work demands so much attention and I'm a lazy reader. That said, the Rabbit books are something everyone should read.
