Duck-Billed Catechist
Might actually be a good thing. There's a high cost of living in Hawaii and folks might be able to get themselves together back home where they have family, etc.
jff
"Critics said the proposal to give homeless a ticket back to the mainland could be easily abused with homeless coming to Hawaii on vacation on one-way tickets knowing they can get a free ride home." What?

Sir Stewart
"Critics said the proposal to give homeless a ticket back to the mainland could be easily abused with homeless coming to Hawaii on vacation on one-way tickets knowing they can get a free ride home." What? So now mainland homeless have a place to spend those extra hundreds of dollars they've all been squirreling away - airfare!
remphish1
It doesn't seem like Hawaii is trying to be compasionate. They probably don't want people bumming around in touristy destination scaring away the tourist. To me this is the approach I see it as. What if the mainland sent all of its homeless to Hawaii? At least it is warm there year round?!
Sir Stewart
Kinda reminds me of the promo video of the Hank Scorpio town in The Simpsons - where the homeless man morphs into a mailbox.
Winston Legthigh
They probably don't want people bumming around in touristy destination scaring away the tourist. They probably don't want people who weren't born there and aren't contributing to the economy sucking up their resources. Note that this policy only applies to homeless people who weren't born there...

At least it is warm there year round?!I agree that compassion is not their major motivation. Still, it may work out well for a good many folks and no one is (supposedly) being forced to leave. A lot of places seem to do this, though usually it involves a bus ticket.
dondoboy
The lawmakers of Hawaii don't believe in creeds, I guess. "Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Moe_Syzlak
Can't they just strap some rickshaws to them and get some use out of 'em?

What? The homeless might not afford to do this, but I can afford a one-way ticket there. Don't bathe for the last few days of my vacation and it cuts my airfare costs in half! Don't bathe for the last few days of my vacation and it cuts my airfare costs in half! There are probably a lot of high school and college kids who get some cash when they graduate and attempt to live a romanticized life in a broken down winnebago on a quiet Hawaiian beach with nothing but sun, sand and surf, but then one day they wake up with a laundry list of STDs and/or drug habits. These are the people who are going to be coming back.
mfwahl
I am at work and didnt read the article closely, but: How do they know if you're homeless? Are you forced to go? I'm imagining a scenario, where I'm on vacation, drink too much, and pass out on the beach. Do I have to show my hotel key card to not get shipped off to Idaho? ZenLunatic
This is destroying the dreams of the homeless people all over the world. What better place to be homeless than Hawaii? Let our country be free for homeless and all.
