Wendy
Well, there is just no end to how many ways this night was an amazing experience for me, and for that I grateful to the generosity of the hosts Ken & Stacy for inviting us into in their home as well as their generosity to both Letters To Santa and Old Town School of Folk! - and of course to Jeff & Susan for all they give of themselves, Jeff especially since he was not feeling 100%. But hopefully the mojo from adoring fans (and a bite to eat at break!) helped a tad, because no doubt the good vibes were in abundance Saturday night in Barrington! The bliss, the glow, whatever you want to call it, I'm still under its aftereffects 3 days and 2 other shows later (busy weekend for me!) I was lucky to attend last year and I think the performances this year were even more outstanding in comparison. Wilco Ensemble, you guys & gals ROCK! Chandler worked so hard to make it happen technically and it really went so smoothly - very impressive! And it was so cool to spend some time with Blossom and other friends old and new Saturday night in Chicago. Ken & Stacy sure throw a great party! There were many musical highlights as noted by others posting above, but to me, any song that Ken played his pedal steel on ruled (because I pedal steel). Especially Gram Parsons' "100 Years From Now" (Molly I do think you were there in spirit!) but my VERY FAVORITE of the evening was "Sky Blue Sky" because it's one of my all-time favorite Wilco songs, and ahhhhhhh it was just beautifully performed by all! There was also someone playing the mandolin that night, and that was really enjoyable as well. Love the mandolin! As one of the participants brought his flying-V style guitar on stage, Jeff reminded us that "... guitars with points give you VD." . (You can hear more of Jeff's theories on guitar shapes on the recording available at Owl & Bear from the March 3, 2007 LR show - disc 2, song 14. Looking forward to the next time I hear some Wilco songs, which will be from the audience at the Wilco show in Knoxville next month, and of course hoping to hear some new songs then as well. ESPECIALLY "Deeper Down" which Jeff played for us last month, and ever since then I have been imagining the full-band treatment of this song in my head. I just know it will be a stunner. lost highway
So, anyway, their escorts got to hear what the rest of us won't get to hear for a few months. Why aren't these escorts saying anything about this? Were they sworn to secrecy?
yankee
Why aren't these escorts saying anything about this? Were they sworn to secrecy? Possibly . . . I'll have to ask them. Anyway, I don't think they are on Via Chicago. Only a few members of our group have been known to post on this board actually, and those of us who do are pretty sporadic about it. Also, we tend to chat with Jeff more about music in general and all kinds of random stuff rather than trying to get info on the new album or tour dates and such. Of course, it's also possible that we know all sorts of inside information but don't want to risk revealing anything that Jeff and Sue wouldn't want us to reveal. You never know. There's a reason the Old Town School's Wilco Ensemble is known as the Wilcult. We're mysterious like that.
Wendy
Why aren't these escorts saying anything about this? Were they sworn to secrecy? We'll get to hear it for ourselves soon enough. I'm more interested in what the driver decided to play for Jeff on the way home!
tjr
We'll get to hear it for ourselves soon enough. I'm more interested in what the driver decided to play for Jeff on the way home! I'm pretty sure Jeff drove Sue and their escorts.... but I haven't heard anything from the escorts since last Saturday. I expect it was a quiet drive back into the city, due to Jeff's migraine. Hope he was feeling better after he got home. Not sure if it was mentioned here, but minutes after leaving the living room show, WXRT played "I Can't Stand It".... XRT freaks me out some times. Like when I was taking the David Bowie class with Bob, we'd learn a Bowie song, then I'd get in the car and it would come on XRT. .. . passenger
Why aren't these escorts saying anything about this? Were they sworn to secrecy? They weren't sworn to secrecy. Jeff supposedly played this at eardrum-splitting volume, so anybody who pulled up next to them would have heard everything. I'm taking the drums back on Monday, so I'll ask for a full report, because I know this group is curious. I remember Andrew said he thought he gave the wrong reaction -- like calling a song "mellow" and Jeff getting upset because the song was supposed to be a "rocker" Anyway, I'll get as much detail as I can. OK, here's what he said: "Let me clarify and officially put on record that I like the new album. Elise LOVEs the new album, but we both agree that the listening party was a little tainted once we got lost... AGAIN! As with every Wilco record, there certainly are some memorable tracks and like Sky Blue Sky, there's the unmistakable signature sound of Mr. Nels Cline all over it. Like SBS, the lyrics are more mature and less disturbing but like I said, I'm only one man with one opinion- and I'll always treasure the old stuff like Being There when Wilco was more of a country band. And let's face it, topping Yankee Hotel will always be a herculean task." The take I got was, if you liked Sky Blue Sky (and I loved it) you will love the new album. No sea changes here. I noticed in the new issue of Rolling Stone the reviewer says the new album "gives off a strong country vibe, with lots of pedal steel and acoustic guitar".
