Winston Legthigh
You overtippers perpetuate mediocre service. And by mediocre service, I'm referring to waitstaff who don't write things down, don't remember who ordered what, don't re-visit the table soon after serving entrees, don't know how to serve a bottle of wine, etc. And those kinds of waiters are the majority of what's out there in my experience. Unless you guys frequent 5-star places.

plasticeyeball
I was wondering if those who consider themselves overtippers used to do food or bev service now or at some point prior in life?  I was also wondering how many of you over tip if the service is "great" when you really mean "hot" (like me). If I can't fuck them, they can go fuck themselves. The other night I got one of those waitresses.  I'm sitting there reading the menu with my wife across the table from me. The waitress comes up "Hello, my name is Sarah, can I start you off with something to drink?" I look up from my menu.. My face looks something like this  My wife's looks at me, her face looks something like this  And then my face turns into something like this

NightOfJoy
I was wondering if those who consider themselves overtippers used to do food or bev service now or at some point prior in life? I worked a second job as a waiter for a year in order to buy a diamond for my lady.........so I understand completely how hard the job can be. That being said, I wont reward poor service or poor attitudes with big tips. Normally, I'll tell the waiter my thoughts on why they sucked and then leave whatever change I have in my pocket. lamradio
Is it "proper" to tip an extra dollar for every alchoholic beverage? Or just add a higher percentage to the whole bill?
plasticeyeball
are you buying them one at a time?
lamradio
are you buying them one at a time? No, usually I have one or two with the meal.
plasticeyeball
then i'd just lump em in with the rest of the bill. in a bar, different story.  wait, do you want to put a higher % on the beverage vs food? this is getting too complicated!

So in a restaurant, I have a few beers with the meal, I just tip 15-20% like normal. But in a bar, yes it is different. A buck or or so with each drink. Thanks for the "tips" plasticeyeball. plasticeyeball
it's easier if you just post a pic of your "server" and then i'll tell you an exact dollar amount.
ih8music
I generally tip well in restaurants, but I don't overtip - typical tip is 18-20%, depending on service. Biggest tip I've ever given was probably 30% - but that was because my kids made a huge mess and I felt guilty leaving it there. I don't think I've ever had stellar enough service to warrant anything over 20% - although that could be because I usually want to be left alone at a restaurant and overly "helpful" waiters/waitresses annoy me more often than not. I've only stiffed a waitress once, and that was when she made a racist joke at the expense of her (almost all mexican) kitchen staff to excuse the slow service we were getting. My wife is mexican (but looks more italian than anything) and next to the 0 on the tip line, i wrote "sorry, we're just mexicans." and I never tip for takeout - as others have mentioned, it's like tipping someone to bag your groceries. I do tip hotel housekeepers - usually $3-5/day, left out in total for them on the 1st morning.... years of travelling on the road for work teaches you to be kind to the hotel staff - pays off in the end (among other things, i'd often get a comp. bottles of wine at places where I stayed on a regular basis). Attentiveness is good -- among other things, we like to have our beverages refreshed pretty often -- but hovering is bad.  Also, I put a little extra in the tip any time a server manages to avoid addressing my group as "you guys," unless we're all male. explodo
I was also wondering how many of you over tip if the service is "great" when you really mean "hot" (like me).Men, in general, get significantly smaller tips from me. I'm not proud of it, but that is the way it is. And from there my scale is ugly, less ugly, not ugly, very not ugly. This could all be a delusion due to their looks, but I find that the women in my very not ugly category are also better waitresses. So I assume they either make more money and therefore hate their jobs less, or they know that they're attractive and are more confident in their waitressing because of it.
