fac93
Hey, I was wondering if anyone out there in Wilco cyberworld would be willing to help out a brother who lives in the wilderness of chain stores (B'ham, AL). If anyone out there is going to this event at a location near you, and wouldn't mind picking up a couple of things (of course on my dime), would you give me a holler. I'd be willing to make it worth your while (not like cutting you a check, but maybe buying your Wilco DVD or something). Thanks in advance.
LouieB
Just a suggestion, but depending on what you want you may want to contact an indie record store and ask yourself. I don't know for sure, but I bet one would help you out; even one in a far flung city. There are plenty of record stores that are mentioned here all the time and if you call or email they can probably get you what you want without you having to beg a VCer. What are you looking for anyway? LouieB
GtrPlyr
What are you looking for anyway?I have a feeling fac93 is looking for the "Ashes" DVD, which comes out on Record Store Day. I doubt any of the local chain stores around my place will be carrying this. I think I'm going to have venture into the big bad city and go to my favorite indie for this. Just as well, I prefer my money go to them anyway.
Wendy
A lot of the participating record stores do internet sales. Call one today and find out if they'll post an order for you. Why any record store would NOT want to make a sale (if they have the merchandise) is beyond me in this economy. Try the ones in bigger cities near you first. http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues

All the clerks are nice and would probably be happy to hook you up and charge you the postage, etc. If all you want is the DVD, it will be readily available when it is available and any record store in any city with any sense will ship you a copy. calvino
I am bit bummed that the record store down here in Hyde Park will not have any copies of the Wilco DVD. They said they contacted Wilco and whoever else you contact to get the advance copies, but they did not get a response from Wilco or anyone. I don't see their name on the Record Store Day Venue link either, so perhaps they are just a bunch of slackers or are not participating. They are a TRUE independent store, I guess. If you need the DVD, Laurie's will have it, since they have close Wilco ties. Its good to see there are still so many indie stores in Illinois, even in smaller towns. stagerug
This is where I go in the far West Chicago 'burbs. Great store, nice folks, cool little town to walk around in after you buy your Wilco DVD. For some reason they are not on the website for the event, but they are participating with all sorts of events and such. Just got an email from them this morning. stagerug
Oh good. They must have updated it. They weren't on there the other day, but I didn't check today. Did you go to Plaza Records in Carbondale? That place has been around for a while. I used the go there and spend all my financial aid money there when I was in school and then steal ramen from my roommates until the next check came... ahhh, those were the days. Considering Carbondale is a pretty dinky town, it is pretty amazing that they have two indie stores, both of which I am sure are always on the verge of going out of business. I'd guess the only thing saving them is that the cost of living down there is still stuck in the 1970's. If you make 50K a year down there you're a member of the country club. Never been to P-Mac. That wasn't there when I was there. Was it relatively any good?

There are plenty of record stores that are mentioned here all the time and if you call or email they can probably get you what you want without you having to beg a VCer. What are you looking for anyway? LouieB Really there's a few things--the Pavement live LP being 1st and foremost, but also the SY/Beck single, New Order 7", Emmylou Harris LP and Wilco DVD. And when I saw on this board info regarding an exclusive download included for the Wilco DVD accessed by some voucher given out at the store, I figured I'd come on here because a VCer would be sure to remember to pick that up as opposed to an order w/ a record store employee a couple of weeks prior to the event. Plus, when I 1st looked at the official record store day website a few months back, the section of participating stores east of the Mississippi was kind of f-ed up, but I've been back today and it seems to have been sorted, so I guess I can go that route now. thanks for everybody's suggestions though. Moss
I stopped in a little record store in Ft. Collins the other day and was looking through the vinyl. The owner came over and was telling me cool facts about all the different bands I was looking at. His passion for the music just came through. Got a used Flash and the Pan vinyl that I could never find anywhere for $4. Independent record stores are the best.
TheMaker
So Ashes will be available at big city record stores (because there are no independent record stores in the vast majority of cities, of course) before it's available anywhere else? Possibly bad form to say so, but here's hoping a torrent crops up soon!
dondoboy
After wading through that Record Store Day list, there are a hell of a lot more independents than I suspected. In Metro Detroit there are almost a lot.

I find both these stores to be just okay, but I do like patronizing any indie stores I can. They had a pretty good used CD selection and some LPs. Plaza is more bare bones. You are right about the cost of living. I would be a freakin millionaire down there...and it is nice. Tweedy's Gurl has decided to stay after graduation for awhile. Emmylou Harris LPI bought this on CD awhile back and frankly it ain't really worth it on LP. You can get an armload of her old LPs for what it will cost for this new one I would guess. I don't think I could handle living down there. It was great while I was at school and it is still great visiting the area on a regular basis, but living down again does not sound appealing, regardless of the cost of living. And yeah if Dr. Wax doesn't get any copies of the Ashes DVD, I guess I going to venture up North. Gonna have to do it early Sat. though; I see the Cardinals are going to be at Wrigley on Sat...I don't like being north of Madison when that happens.,

We shall see how long she lasts...meanwhile P-Mac has more inventory and is more like a regular store than Plaza, which seems more of a hippie joint. Go way around Wrigley and come to Lauries. But then again no matter where you go the fans will be nuts. LouieB

I think if I could keep the living I am making now and just transpose myself and my family down to Carbondale, I think I would do it. But that is the problem, no industry down there except the Hospitals and the University. There is so much outdoorsy shit to do down there, you know. Feeling energetic? Go mountain biking at Cedar Lake or rock climbing at Garden of the Gods (that'll never happen for me, but you can! I just bring my cooler and watch) or go jet-skiing on Cedar Lake. Feeling lazy, go fishing on Little Grassy Lake or bring your boat and a keg out to the spillway. I may be being nostalgic, and probably am, but Carbondale sounds like so much more fun than being out here in the boring-ass suburbs.
