It's a collab. between Pollard and Richard Davies (of Cardinal), both of whom I like a lot.

I had the album in my hand yesterday and just couldn't pull the trigger:

 

Post- (and later-era) GBV kept me from pulling the trigger on it, but I am still curious to hear what these two could have come up with.

Here's the AMG (3-star) review:

Robert Pollard has a clearly defined sound and style as a songwriter, and as a consequence, nearly everything he does carries his recognizable creative stamp, whether it's his solo work, his albums with Guided by Voices, or his increasingly large number of post-GBV projects such as Boston Spaceships and the Keene Brothers. What's surprising about the first album from Pollard's latest side project, Cosmos, is that for a change it doesn't sound all that much like a typical Robert Pollard album. Jar of Jam Ton of Bricks was written and recorded in collaboration with Richard Davies of the Moles and Cardinal, and while his approach has clearly rubbed off on Pollard, the often spare and slightly trippy tone of these 14 songs stakes out a territory separate from Pollard's revved-up smart pop and Davies' more polished and Baroque approach. Given how big Pollard can sound with a band and the lush surfaces of Davies' music with Cardinal, what's most unexpected about Jar of Jam is its compact simplicity; many of the tunes find Pollard and Davies accompanied by no more than a guitar or piano and some hand percussion, a few selections are just ambient soundscapes, and when the full band does comes in on "Grapes of Wrath" and "For the Whiz Kid," the results sound like a leaner and more compact variation on Pollard's traditional approach. Cosmos doesn't represent an especially bold or radical new direction for either Pollard or Davies, and some of these selections are more like fragments than fully realized songs, but the collaboration does nudge both artists into directions they might not have pursued on their own, and if you've ever been interested in either of them, you'll find some fine moments here, even if they don't cohere into a strong whole.

 

I'm now having non-buyer's remorse. I gotta pick this up.

I'd hold off Todd as there are only a couple of good songs. The songs Richard recorded were left as is and just added to the record. That was basically the extent of their collaboration. That said, Richard's 'Grapes of Wrath' is one of the best songs on the record.

like every Pollard post-GBV record with the exception of the phenomenal From a Compound Eye & outstanding Keene Brothers, it has two or three great songs and a ton of filler

 

Pollard's post-GBV career has been a massive disappointment, although the spaceships live shows were great

Hardwood Floors - I agree with your grading but I am surprised that you graded The Boston Spaceship albums so low. Out of all his solo material, those two albums, along with FaCE and The Keene Brother's album, are superior quality in comparison. The Boston Spaceships have restored my faith in Uncle Bob, somewhat. He still issues solo albums that he should keep to himself, but the band dynamic is truly a huge plus for Pollard.

 

I think the fans should challenge him: 1 record, 1 year. try it. Edit and revise all the songs you come up with and see what you come up with. From a Compound Eye is proof that meticulous editing and revision can produce a great album. Taking your time is a good thing.

BJ -- I agree that the Spaceships records sound better than the solo stuff, mainly because they're a departure from the tired formula of Pollard scribbling down some words and Todd Tobias rushing into the studio to match up some faceless music to go with 'em. they do sound good. and the live shows rocked. but i just don't think the songs are anything special. headache revolution is 1,000 times better when it's just bob and his guitar. and the spaceships version of catherine of mid-october, same deal -- the original is wayyyy better. i mean, the guy set the bar so high -- when you write motor away, subspace biographies, smothered in hugs, everybody's a raincloud, liar's tale, storm vibrations, little lines, game of pricks, i am a scientist, etc., etc., etc., and then you give me freaking cave zone? it's just sad.

ya know, there are some great songs here and there from the last few years. i really dig shadow port. circle saw boys club. the blondes. no island. miles under the skin is fantastic. folded claws. but i don't think he's put out a good record since FaCE, which i love.

the takeovers version is chris slusarenko's treatment - adding drums and bass and some more guitar to the existing track. great stuff but dates back to early 1990s

I find it a waste of time to keep comparing everything to his '92-'97 period. It just won't measure up. I feel part of the charm of that era was the whole lo-fi thing and recording out of the pressure of circumstance and condition. Is 'Off To Business" as good as those aforementioned records, including FaCE ? No, but there are 3-4 songs I'd rather have than not. I do like 'Elephant Jokes' quite a bit and find it to have a lot in common with The Keene Bros record. It may not be as consistent but there are certainly 7-8 good 'rock' songs present.

 

That being said, I'd love an MP3 (PM please) of Bobby & guitar = 'The Rain Dodger'.

to me, everything from forever since breakfast through FaCE was absolutely brilliant, and everything since has been bad to average. it's that simple. i'm just tired of pollard and his drunken band of asshole kool-aid drinkers claiming every mediocre solo record that comes out every few weeks "is the best thing he's ever done." it's just sad. i don't think anybody really believes it. everybody knows he just puts out 15 records a year because he knows there's a group of people who will buy everything, no matter how bad it is, and the more he puts out, the more money he makes. remember when it was an event when a Robert Pollard piece of music was released? the buildup, the excitement, the buzz, and then the sense of discovery at 15 amazing new Bob tracks? now he puts out "the greatest thing ever" every few weeks and the product never comes close to living up to the buzz.

i'm not a fan of winston's atomic bird, go for the exit or you satisfy me & the fiction man tracks i would pick are different than yours (probably run son run, trial of affliction & light sleeping, every word in the world and children come on), but other than that, everything you listed would be somewhere in my top 150 or so ...

And yes, that Keene Brothers record is the bomb. I am not familiar with Tommy's work at all but he needs to do more collaborative work with Pollard.

Just added the Keene Brothers to my wishlist. How exciting that there is a good Pollard album that I have not checked out! Really enjoying this thread. I love Pollard but just can't keep up with his output so I love these rankings. Helps me to know which ones I should check out next.

I just listened to Go for the Exit on the headphones at work to check it out ... it's actually a fine track that I probably underestimated.

 

Moss -- Keene Brothers is definitely worth checking out. very poppy and heavy on guitars. best of all, it is untouched by Todd Tobias's production (other than bob's vox) so it has a real deep rich thick guitar crunch to it, which none of the recent solo records have had. also make sure you check out tommy's solo stuff, which is uniformly great
