Ghost Of Bob Cumming Posted November 4, 2009 Share Posted November 4, 2009 Somebody else will have to help with the setlist (though I can remember we began with Wilco (the Song)/Shot In The Arm/Bull Black Nova, and that Encore 1 was Poor Places>Spiders), but what a cracking show! My first Wilco show in 12 years so wasn't expecting the almost full Academy that I walked into, pretty vocal lot too, good atmosphere. Jeff wasn't happy with someone video-ing early on, but he came round after that - they all seemed pretty pleased by the end. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Hopefully someone will get thrown out at every Wilco gig as it certainly changed the dynamics of the show, which up to that point was brilliant but Jeff was being his usual UK-stand-off-uncertain-self, which totally cracked afterwards and he had a ball. The whole band had the most fun I've ever seen at a Wilco gig. Still can't believe everybody shouted for a Summerteeth song rather than an AM song when given the choice though?!?! Come on people...how often do you get jeff loving AM enough to be offering a song? Having said that, Can't Stand It was great! On a note for those attending London - poor old John's throat was shot (though I didn't notice during the gig) and speaking to him afterwards he said he was take some steriods today for it to hold up. Could not believe the intensity which Nels brought to Shot in the Arm which was only second song in! Agree that Jeff mellowed after he apologised for letting us see his "angry face"! Only happy faces on stage and in the hall at the end even though there was no Ashes and no Chicago. Wish I was going to London now.... not going far Posted November 4, 2009 Share Posted November 4, 2009 Myself and the missus travelled from Glasgow (come to Scotland, Jeff!) for the gig last night and I have to say it was awesome. Impossible Germany was met with rapturous applause especially near the end when Jeff, Nels and Pats' guitars come together. Radio Cure was relatively unexpected to very welcome addition to the set. I'm glad we got Sonny Feeling and Theologians (two of my favourite songs on the night). Jeffs guitar for Theologians is a great multi-coloured SG which someone remarked was great to which Jeff replied "This guitar is ridiculous" and proceeded to lick it as if it were some 'candy'. Jeff asked us to sing Jesus, Etc which he's done in the US but noted he wasn't expecting us to be as loud as the Americans. "We're a soft sell rock band". Apparently, we were louder.... As above, slightly disappointed the audience chose a Summerteeth song over an AM song (I would have loved to hear Box Full of Letters) I'm A Wheel is a great ending though with Jeff goading Pat into some serious Pete Townshend style windmilling! (oh and on that thought Glenn had a serious rock star pose at the start of ITMWLY - which was the best song of the night!) If this was anything to go by then the band really need to play the UK more often. I think they felt the love last night! I am a lucky man. Scottish but living in the States I get to see one of the best bands of the last fifteen years a lot more often and easily than my compatriots. I am slightly perplexed as to why Wilco don't have a bigger profile in Britain. At this point, they could use a relatively popular hit on Radio 2, followed by a decent slot at Glastonbury, a killer performance there, followed by good press on said performance and then a tour which is a lot bigger than 3 or 4 cities and one that completely misses some of the best audiences in the world (in Scotland). Yep, there was a guy about 7 rows back dead center filming the show. Jeff came to the front of the stage, pointed him out and called security. The guy stood by the front barrier for a couple of minutes until he was escorted away by security. Jeff made a comment later something along the lines of we don't mind anything at our shows except being videotaped. Not sure what happened to the guy afterwards, assume he was escorted from the premises. This was the third time i've seen Wilco in the UK, and as an earlier poster said, Jeff was by far more chattier with the audience than i've seen him previously. There was definitely a good vibe at the show, hopefully it'll encourage them to come back to the UK more often, and play more shows on those tours. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Yep it was a camcorder, and he was shooting the whole thing. There were loads of people taking pictures or doing small video grabs and they weren't stopped. I think Jeff picked him out as much because he was directly in Jeff's eyeline. At first i thought he had an issue with one of the professional photographers in the pit, as it looked like he was waving them away. Of bands, I have seen in the last 5 or 6 years only the Arcade Fire and the Flaming Lips have put on better shows. Aside from the aforementioned bands ability to put on a "performance", I think it's hard for anyone to touch Wilco musically. How many bands can go from pretty acoustic folk to Krautrock wig outs to gospel tinged bluesy rock to straight-ahead rock or pop and remain incredibly on and unified throughout the whole show? I agree re Arcade Fire who I've seen a couple of times - never seen the Lips but I can imagine they are impressive live. I'm going to file away your description of Wilco so I can use it to describe them to people who ask me what they sound like when I am out on my evangelical trail, witnessing for the cause. Amazing musicians, fantastically varied and melodic songs and a great dolefully funny front man in Jeff Tweedy.I think the variety of styles is part of why they're not so well known in the uk... no journalist or dj can work without having a neat category to put an act in!They've done Glastonbury a couple of times, and it's the same there.... they opened the Pyramid stage one Saturday to a very sparse audience... and when I talk to people about how amazing they are, they ask "what sort of music do they play?"...it's Wilco music saw tham last night in London, and they were as amazing as ever... we were talking on the way home about the kind of venues they play, and being selfish, it's quite good that they're not more famous, as we get the chance to see them in good sized venues with no problem getting tickets. I can't really imagine their subtleties getting over to an audience in an arena ....? Quote Link to post Share on other sites
