Guest Line
In both Wilco and Loose Fur lyrics, Tweedy makes reference to the season autumn as being that of the devil... is there something in the Bible or some other religious teaching that labels autumn as the devil's month? Who came up with this metaphor first, if not?

Chinese Apple
... Bible or some other religious teaching that labels autumn as the devil's month? Autumn is not a month. It usually lasts around three months. I don't know which Wilco or Loose Fur songs refer to Autumn specifically, but I can think of one ("Not for the Season") that mentions Halloween. Mainly about leftover candy, though, and not the devil. I guess Halloween might originally have had something to do with evil?
Guest Speed Racer
Mainly about leftover candy, though, and not the devil. I don't know, those extra pounds don't jump on my belly by themselves after the holidays...
Guest Runaway Jim
Autumn comes you sit in your chair and you stare At the TV squareHiding in the deep endWeeding out the weekends One summer, a suicideAnother autumn, a traveler's guideHe hits snooze twice before he dies For all the leaves will burn In autumn fires and then returnFor all the fires we burnAll will return Those are the only three songs I can think of with "autumn" in them. Guest Speed Racer
Leaf burning is the instrument of the devil. Praise Satan! Rake for thy pyre!

Guest Line
Those songs you all listed were ones I was referring to, and also "Ashes of the American Flag" when he mentions how putting fallen leaves in trash bags is a good thing... that makes me thing burning fallen leaves is the opposite of a devil act, because putting them in bags is getting rid of them. Halloween falls in autumn, and he shows that autumn is a time of gluttony and other depressing behaviors. Then again, Jeff doesn't believe in religious teachings, so I'm not sure why he's referring to the overconsumption of candy as a bad thing. I think it's along the lines of his lyric about having a bunch of unread books in the house.
LouieB
Autumn is one of four seasons, I bet Tweedy also refers to the other seasons in songs as well. Someone other than me can do that kind of a search. LouieB
choo-choo-charlie
Autumn is one of four seasons, I bet Tweedy also refers to the other seasons in songs as well. Someone other than me can do that kind of a search. LouieB In "Not for the Season," he mentions the other three: "Springtime comes and the leaves are back on the trees again""Summer comes and gravity undoes you""Winter comes and the days all start late" And others: Summerteeth, "One summer, a suicide, Another autumn, a traveler's guide.""Heavy Metal Drummer," "Oh I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands I used to go see on the landing in the summer.""Hell is Chrome," there's "the air was crisp, like sunny late winter days...a springtime yawning, high in the haze." And I suppose these lyrics could count as 'references' to seasons: "I got a court date coming this June...""He must be down in Pensacola hiding from the snow..." That's all I got. Guest Bob Lee
His mentioning of summer allowing gravity to undo you in "Not for the Seasons" clearly shows that summer is on "heavenly" side, where our soul is freed and we aren't inhibited. I forget which Loose Fur song it is, but he makes a reference to people not being able to sing, which I'm guessing falls under autumn and not summer.
nodep5
I've come to view autumn based on how the Cubs are doing. I distinctly remember cool crisp days in 89, 98, 03 and 07, 08 for both beautiful and tormenting reasons. However I do truly associate the season with the Cubs. Chinese Apple
Anyone ever listen to any of these songs backwards? In the olden days, didn't all the best bands hide their messages about Satan, etc., that way?
choo-choo-charlie
Anyone ever listen to any of these songs backwards? In the olden days, didn't all the best bands hide their messages about Satan, etc., that way? I went to a Catholic high school back in the day, and in one of my theology courses, our teacher incorporated a segment on this into class one day. We spun "Stairway to Heaven" backwards and there is a part where the lyric sounds like "there was a toolshed where we suffered...my sweet Satan." Robert Plant's voice sounded really creepy. Chinese Apple
Ever hear of the phenomenon of pareidolia? Here is the Wiki on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia Some scientists think humans have a pattern recognition reflex, and that this is why we make out possible "words" from gibberish (dogs that say "I love you"), see faces on Mars, or Mother Teresa in a cinnamon bun. All art is Rorschach. Sometimes what we perceive is more about us than about what the artist's intentions are, no?

Chinese Apple
Proponents of pareidolia would argue that having the supposed backward "lyrics" up on the screen encourages your brain "hear" those words. Here is an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsMtfOp6OPY But it's still a lot of fun to do, if you are bored and have the technology. Would love to know what "Not for the Season" sounds like backwards. If there are any hidden messages it HAS to be on a Loose Fur (Lucifer) album.

dagwave
Actually, I think this is a pretty valid topic for a thread. I'll probably never listen to Autumnteeth the same way now.
