watchtower41
Just heard from Jason Thomas on XRT here in Chicago that Jeff is on stage right now, sitting in on Mavis Staples set at Lollapalooza. Cool.

bböp
Yep, Jeff joined Mavis on stage yesterday for two songs that appear on her upcoming record, the title track "You Are Not Alone" as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Wrote A Song For Everyone." He didn't really sing and and only sort of strummed along on an acoustic guitar, seeming content to just be up there with Mavis and not wanting to interfere with her and her band. At one point, Mavis wished Jeff and the lovely srmt--"Susie Q and Tweedy," I believe she called them--a happy 15th anniversary. I would think that Mavis' set will be one of the highlights of Solid Sound next weekend. She played several songs off the new record at Lollapalooza, including a killer version of "I Belong To The Band," (made famous by Rev. Gary Davis). She closed out the hourlong set with some old standbys such as "The Weight" and the Staples Singers' classics "Freedom Highway" and "I'll Take You There."
Magnetized
Lots of reviews have been posted about Mavis' performance, and I haven't read a bad one in the bunch. Here are a few links:http://blogs.suntime...lollapaloo.htmlhttp://www.examiner....s-Mavis-Staplesand Greg Kot has a short piece with a little compare/contrast with Lady Gaga! http://www.chicagotr...,7289415.column
k8tee
Mavis Staples was amazing -- what a performer! And she did engage me much more than Gaga did. Her joy was contagious. Jeff showing up was a nice surprise. Saw Glenn at side of stage watching, too. And Pat joined Jamie Lidell for some of his set. Wandered over because it sounded interesting -- just in time for Pat to come on stage; he played melodica and tambourine for a couple songs. Wilco was everywhere yesterday! Doug C
Thanks for the link, timewasjoke. I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the Mavis Tiny Desk Concert: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129005693 She does the 2 Tweedy-penned songs.
Magnetized
Thanks for the link, timewasjoke. I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the Mavis Tiny Desk Concert: http://www.npr.org/t...oryId=129005693 She does the 2 Tweedy-penned songs. Oh, isn't she wonderful? She has such a naturally soulful voice. I think I like the stripped down vocals better than the recorded version that will be on the CD.
knotgreen
not sure if this has been posted, but there is a video of jeff and mavis on the amazon page for her new album: http://www.amazon.com/You-Are-Alone-Mavis-Staples/dp/B003RDPYCG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1281964010&sr=1-5 my favorite part was mavis saying, "i don't know where tweedy been all my life!" definitely worth watching
