ckc
There was a mention in the Sun-Times about Jeff Tweedy playing a fundraiser for Rahm Emanuel on Sunday January 30, 2011 at Chicago's Park West nightclub. http://www.suntimes.com/news/sneed/3318603-452/peterson-savio-sneed-thomas-drew.html "Rahm ’em . . . Singer Jeff Tweedy, of Wilco fame, will headline a “low dollar” ($50 to $250 a tickets) fund-raiser for mayoral hopeful Rahm Emanuel on Jan. 30 at the Park West." Nothing on the Wilcoworld.net site yet. Nothing on the Rahm site yet.
LouieB
Really??? That seems strange. Then again he is probably going to be the next mayor, so what the heck. LouieB
nodep5
I'm going to act like this isn't real.He will be the next mayor, but to align yourself with someone that ..............creepy/sleazy............is creepy!
ckc
It is now official... https://secure.chicagoforrahm.com/events/chicago0130.html Cheapest tickets are $85.
LouieB
I'm going to act like this isn't real.He will be the next mayor, but to align yourself with someone that ..............creepy/sleazy............is creepy!Yea, it is kind of creepy. I am currently supporting Del Valle, who of course doesn't have much of a chance. Everyone can certainly support whomever they choose, but I won't be shelling out $85 to see Jeff for this. Sorry Jeff. We all know the guy is going to be mayor, but really. Why not sit this one out?? At the present time, Rahm has raised more money than all the other candidates put together, he just got Bill Clinton here yesterday for a rally, and he is clearly the front runner. Not sure he needs Jeff's or our support at this point. LouieB
Doug C
That had better be one helluva drink.
jc4prez
Damn Jeff. This is really disappointing. Although I was disappointed to see you campaign for Obama I figured after watching his dismal performance you'd have jumped ship. Whats the deal?
LouieB
Maybe Barack called Jeff directly and asked him to do this. LouieB
jc4prez
Maybe Barack called Jeff directly and asked him to do this. LouieB Damn rock musicians being controlled by the lobbyists! I really would care less had jeff not harped so much on Bush.
LouieB
Damn rock musicians being controlled by the lobbyists! I really would care less had jeff not harped so much on Bush. And as we all know, there is no difference between Barack and Bush.... LouieB
ckc
Wow, I'm going to assume you guys are the vocal minority and that there are plenty of Wilco/Tweedy fans who will happy to see Jeff perform in a (for Chicago) small setting.
ih8music
Maybe Barack called Jeff directly and asked him to do this. LouieBOr Jeff and Rahm became friends while campaigning for Obama. (or he might just think he's the best person for the job?) Either way, I understand the frustration. If a musician/artist that I like publicly supported someone like Palin/Bachmann/etc. I'd likely be disappointed and a little bit pissed off.
Guest Speed Racer
Everyone can certainly support whomever they choose I'm pretty sure Jeff is. You're supporting the candidate you want in the way that you do best, and Jeff is doing his best to support his candidate. I don't see any reason to turn a concert thread into a political thread. You're supporting the candidate you want in the way that you do best, and Jeff is doing his best to support his candidate. I don't see any reason to turn a concert thread into a political thread. I wasn't even thinking politically. I was thinking sleazy is sleazy no matter what their political views are. I just question the wisdom in aligning yourself with someone who I find overtly sleazy. I wouldn't support Tom Cruise or John Edwards for example. Some just put off the insincere sleazy vibe. Rahm's is more scary sleazy but you get my point. It is a character issue Also if you as a musician play a concert for a political cause, it may turn into a political threadBut even though I prefer to have little politics in music, I can accept a musician supporting someone that I wouldn't, it is when they get pompous and degrading about it, like they are enlighted and I'm not. Bobby Bare Jr. has a great article on this posted on Aquarium Drunkard a few months back. Anyway, I know I sound like the one casting judgement and acting enlighted about Rahm being sleazy, but come on, he is part of the Chicago machine, it is inherent. Guest Speed Racer
It is a character issue But character is still as much a matter of opinion as any other element of a political candidate. Saying it's a _____ issue still means it's an opinion. YHF would still be one of my favorite albums if Leroy ended up as the VP for McCain's ticket.

Its a political concert? And jeff is a hypocrite. He was all upset about bush's wars, civil liberty violations, banker giveaways and now that the democracts are doing the same thing he wants to help them get elected?? Seems ass backwards. Guest Speed Racer
And jeff is a hypocrite. Who isn't? ETA: Given Rahm's digital deficiency, would it be rude or insensitive of Jeff to play One Wing?
Duck-Billed Catechist
My vote is for "kind of icky."
Guest Speed Racer
"Let's have Emmanuel for Mayor" would be a fun twist on an old favorite.
Edie
IIRC, Wilco is Rahm's favorite band. So while I probably won't wreck my marriage over this, I'm sure it will be reasonably well attended. Edit: Yep Oh Edit again: I also think there is a reasonable chance that the Tweedys and Emmanuals know each other from the temple on the north side. Just guessing on this. Guest Jules
I would go if someone gave me a free ticket. That way I wouldn't feel guilty for supporting Rahm. Otherwise, I'll pass.
Magnetized
What's with all the hate for Rahm? I'm not a Chicagoan so I don't follow the local news there closely, but he seems like a damned smart guy. Maybe a little abrasive and lacking in patience, but a can-do kind of person with insider connections that could make him a good mayor. Is there some reason everyone here seems to feel otherwise? And just re that benefit show, I would LOVE to see Jeff and the Uptown Sound!
Doug C
Is there some reason everyone here seems to feel otherwise? Rahm is a shithole.
Scalzunfield
I don't know if it's just because I hear too much Republican rhetoric, but the only things I've heard about Rham are negative. Nobody seems to be able to find anything positive to say. Granted, I'm not into politics (hate talking about it just as much as religion to be honest) so I don't look into it much, but one thing I do know is that 99.9% of politicians are complete douchebags. The one running the country is a douchebag, the one last one who ran the country was a douchebag (albeit on a far greater scale) and everything points to this guy being another douchebag politician. I have a hard time paying money for something that ultimately will support a politician like this so, as much as I love Jeff, there's no way I'm hitting this one. Magnetized
Yeah, this is definitely a political fundraiser, so if I didn't like the candidate I wouldn't go and support him/her regardless of how much I liked the music. And I have to admit, my feelings about favorite musicians would be negatively affected by knowing they supported causes I strongly disagreed with. Fortunately, that hasn't happened to me that I can recall--or that I know about. Personally, I don't think politics is inherently douchey and that all politicians are douchbags. I most certainly don't feel that way about Obama and, given my general political inclinations, I suspect I would support Rahm Emmanual if I lived in Chicago. So I would feel no dissonance in going to this concert. But yeah, if you don't support the cause, don't go to the fundraiser. You're bound to be at the very least disappointed and frustrated.
