PopTodd
After searching for years for a Mexican place near me that serves huitlacoches (corn mushrooms), I finally found one:Los Chilaquiles in Cicero. It's just a little dive with about 7 or 8 little tables. Looks like a typical taqueria, but it's anything but. I walked in with my son, and the owner greeted us and told us, "I am going to sell you a LOT of food tonight!" He walked us through the menu which, despite my familiarity with Mexican food, had a lot of stuff that I had not yet seen, including a bunch of different salsas. (One with roasted chipotle peppers and tequilla was especially amazing.)We had mini sopes for an appetizer -- each with a different kind of salsa. The one chipotle/tequilla one, one with a poblano cream, and a third with red chiles and queso and crema. Then, we had tacos with huitlacoches and squash blossoms and sopes with stewed pork shoulder. "This is the real Mexican food. This is what we eat at home." So, so good. There is a lot of stuff on that menu that I have not yet tried, including the coffee. I love Mexican coffee, and I aim to have some the next time. They also serve breakfast.
calvino
Sounds good - you should put the info in LouieB's Going to Chicago thread. I can't remember the last time I was in Cicero.

Guest Jules
"This is the real Mexican food. This is what we eat at home."What part of Mexico?
PopTodd
What part of Mexico? That is a good, and pertinent question.I did not ask him what part he was from. But the owner was the only one in the store that spoke much English at all.
bleedorange
I guess I take for granted the vast number of great Mexican food places here (Tex-Mex and Interior).
Doug C
My neighborhood real Mexican joint took it to Bonnaroo. Any Bonnaroo attending VCers partake? It's a nice perk being able to walk to the Taco Bus for authentic Mexican. http://www.tampabay.com/news/humaninterest/article1175457.ece
Scott Gyrrr
I guess I take for granted the vast number of great Mexican food places here (Tex-Mex and Interior). I'm jealous of you guys. How many good Mexican joints do you think there are in Auckland, New Zealand? Sweet F.Actually the three I know of are all pretty nice though only one is cheap enough to eat regularly, and thats only open three days a week. I have to say I impressed myself with the Enfrijolas I made on the weekend. Lotsa chorizo and some Pobalano and Serrano chiles. Yumness.
Autumnteeth
It took me a while to get here but I owe you. This was unreal. The guy has a passion for his product that is not just reflected in the interview session, for lack of a better term, he gave us, but in the food. I explained what I like, my wife did the same, and we were blown away. He comes back with this thing for my wife that was like a fried burrito with a sauce over it that she spent a half hour posting about on facebook. She isnt an enthusiast, so it was perfect. I got bistec con rajas y queso, and a small side of bistec diablo, and was blown away.
Autumnteeth
And by the way, this was my first trip to Cicero in 20 years and to be honest I have been lured onto so many "great" places that sucked I was reluctant. Only reason we went was a wreck on the Stevenson forced us off at Central. We used to go to a bar called the Fire Alarm, which never closed, and if you got there before 2 AM breakfast was free at 7. The number 2, which was two eggs, two pieces of sausage, two pieces of bacon, and two biscuits and gravy with a mimosa (Mimosa was $3.00 if you were a free breakfast participant). At that time, that was the best meal to be had in the town.
