Wish I Wrote That One....

Recommended Posts

Have you ever been so touched by the words of a song that you thought, "Damn, I wish I had written that...."?

A couple of mine:

"If I could choose a place to die, it would be in your arms...."

Eric Clapton

"Breathe out, so I can breathe you in...."

Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl)

Several Jim Ford songs:

• "...she's the prettiest damn mistake I made this year."

• "I'm not crying 'cause I love you, I'm just crying 'cause I can"

• "If you can get away from that guy who loves you, without breaking his heart in two, I can get away from the girl who needs me; she don't need me like I need you."

I mean... DAMN!

I'm sure that there are more, from other folks. Let me think on it.

probably a bunch of Magnetic Fields songs, too.

Here's one by Merritt:

"When you're old and lonely

And the rush of life has passed

The days go by too slowly

And the years go by too fast..."

And, a little more poetically:

"Growing older is killing a child who laughed and smiled at anything."

And how will it be with our souls?

When we meet in that spirit land

What the human heart never knows

Will the spirit then understand?

And in some celestial form

Will our sorrows repeat at be?

Will I still mean nothing to her?

Though she is the world to me

Damn, just damn...

I'm on the sofa hoping she leaves that punk...

Last night i dreamt the whole night long

I woke with a head full of songs

i spent the whole day

I wrote em down but its a shame

Tonight i'll burn the lyrics,

cause every chorus was your name

YES. Favorite Avett Bros lyric. Here's another one

"Oh lou, no my dreams did not come true. No they only came apart" - Dawes

"Why Not Your Baby" by Gene Clark

contains the great line:

"The truth rang out when you called me, and called my name"

Love it.

Bruce Cockburn:

Smiling girl directing traffic flow

.45 strapped over cotton print dress

Marimba-brown and graceful limbs

Give me a moment of loneliness

or

Like a pearl in sea of liquid jade

His ship comes shining

Like a crystal swan in a sky of suns

His ship comes shining

or

Pachinko jingle and space torpedo beams

Comic book violence and escaping steam

Grey suited business men pissing against the wall --

Cut to crumbling guardrail, slow motion car fall

I like most of the lyrics to Around the Sun, here's a few of them:

"If the world is filled with the likes of you then I'm putting up a fight"

"hold on world, cause you don't know what's coming"

"the water is rising you don't want to stay"

"you're not hurting anybody else's chances (but) you're disfiguring your own"

"Some things don't hold up over the course of a lifetime"

On the other hand there are some lyrics by The Low Anthem, I like them for the simple reason that they're banal, shows you can make a song out of the daily minutia of life:

"She left me here with breakfast in bed

Oatmeal with sugar and a hard-boiled egg

The note on the dresser said I'll be back by three

I'm going uptown, did you need anything?"

"I'm going uptown, did you need anything?"

Have you seen lyrics this banal? (nonetheless the song is very beaufiful)

I'm sure I can think of more examples, but "The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron and Wine immediately comes to mind.

"And please, remember me seldomly

In the car behind the carnival

My hand between your knees, you turned from me

And said, 'The trapeze act was wonderful

But never meant to last', the clown that passed

Saw me just come up with anger

When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot

Had an element of danger"

Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries

It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say

I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one

I hope some day you'll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say

I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one

I hope some day you'll join us

And the world will live as one
