bböp
A good, solid ending to this week's Los Angeles run with some amusing banter and, once again, some pretty nice variety in the setlist... From what I understand, this was the first concert in the LA Theatre in a long time following a renovation. If so, kudos to those responsible for that. It's a beautiful room (the bathrooms were something to behold as well, with old-school touches like marble urinals and a shoeshine area in the men's and, I'm told, a mirrored parlor and very spacious stalls in the ladies') and sounded quite nice. Not sure it's the best venue for a rock concert, but it definitely provided a nice contrast to the Hollywood Palladium and the Wiltern. Jeff mentioned that the audience members could definitely stop worrying about being the smartest people to ever set foot in the venue since apparently Albert Einstein attended the opening-night festivities — a screening of Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights"— in 1931. As for the setlist, I personally enjoyed Black Moon segueing into Side With The Seeds, which flowed perfectly. And the acoustic Spiders was a nice surprise. Radio Cure had kind of a funny moment in the middle when someone started playing out of key or something and it almost looked like Jeff was going to stop the song, but the band somehow held it together. Anyone else notice that? I'm pretty sure Standing O was on the printed list in the encore but was audibled out of, with Red-Eyed>I Got You replacing it because Jeff said they—or at least he—had played it "like dogshit the other night at the Palladium." kidsmoke
The acoustic Spiders (kidsmoke) took my breath away, it was so perfect. The song that gave me my username here! It gave me chills and made this night the birthday bash of my dreams. All the rest was pretty damned excellent too.

Johnny Meltone
RE: Radio Cure...Jeff totally got lost in the arrangement. A good recovery though. Shouldn't be ashamed was amazing.
rookiecard
Stunningly beautiful building. Totally worth the traffic from San Diego. Much different set from Tempe, luckily. Some friends said it was their fave show of the 3 LA shows. Fun funny stuff from Jeff..... "We'll be back here for the Grammy's where we'll be up against the Foo Fighters again. (pause) Fuckin' Foo Fighters. You guys all comin to the Grammys? I know YOU'RE going to the Grammys, Miss Front Row checking my Blackberry every ten seconds!" Nels Cline, the 82nd greatest guitarist of all-time. (referencing Rolling Stone's list) I dunno, I'd put him in the mid 70's but 82's not bad. (cut/paste from other thread, sue me)Well, it looks like we've divided our audience.....the standers and the sitters (huge applause). I'm not going to choose a side. It's like a red state/blue state thing. I know where *I* stand!" (HUGE applause)Pretty sure it was right before "Can't Stand It", which made it all the funnier when they got to the chorus. Muzzle of Dan
The acoustic Spiders (kidsmoke) took my breath away, it was so perfect. The song that gave me my username here! It gave me chills and made this night the birthday bash of my dreams. All the rest was pretty damned excellent too. I totally thought of you as soon as this song kicked in!!! What an awesome version and how fortunate for us all to see it! (Especially if it's your handle and it's your birthday!) I loved hearing Radio Cure!!! (even if it did get a little messy in the middle, I also thought it looked as if Jeff were about to stop the song)... Seeing this song last night completed the cycle for me of seeing every song off YHF live. I'm really happy they did Less Than You Think... I love the lyrics to that song and the noise transition going into Art Of Almost was killer. Someone had previously mentioned that Shouldn't Be Ashamed was amazing... Indeed it was! Reservations is so beautiful. It was really nice to be able to hear it again. Here's a pic of the setlist... It certainly would have been awesome to see Ashes, but honestly - after the last week of shows I've seen, I have nothing to complain about. I feel extremely fortunate to be "in" on this band. They really put on a hell of a show, night after night.
Shug
I was so thrilled for You Never Know! Seemed like they played much more of a straight-up guitar-oriented rock show and that the rocking out started a lot earlier in the show than typical lately.I was happy to hear Side With The Seeds, The Late Greats and Hate It Here. I Got You was pounding! Ashes would've floored me. But add in Kidsmoke (although I'd have lost it if they'd played the hard, funky jamming version), Reservations and Can't Stand It and you've got a hell of a setlist. I had so much fun at this show, what an amazing theater! Thanks to all the good people I met for the fun times and treating me so well, Happy Birthday, kidsmoke! I'm glad it was a special night for you. Can't wait to do it all again soon! Santa Barbara...?
jw harding
Any recordings of this show turn up anywhere? Some good youtubes of Spiders and Impossible Germany on the interweb.
kidsmoke
My son Brennan had hoped to record this night but the promoter, Goldenvoice, wasn't allowing tapers. So unless someone managed a stealth recording, this one may exist only in our memories. A real shame, if so. It was a phenomenal show & I'd love to hear it again.
