PopTodd
SOURCE:http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/02/soul-train-creator-don-cornelius-dead-in-apparent-suicide.html "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius was found dead at his Sherman Oaks on home Wednesday morning.Law enforcement sources said police arrived at Cornelius' home around 4 a.m. He apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing. The sources said there was no sign of foul play, but the Los Angeles Police Department was investigating. In a 2010 interview with The Times, he said he was excited about a movie project he was developing about "Soul Train.""We've been in discussions with several people about getting a movie off the ground. It wouldn't be the 'Soul Train' dance show, it would be more of a biographical look at the project," he said. "It's going to be about some of the things that really happened on the show."According to a Times article, Cornelius’ “Soul Train” became the longest-running first-run nationally syndicated show in television history, bringing African American music and style to the world for 35 years.Cornelius stopped hosting the show in 1993, and “Soul Train” ceased production in 2006. LouieB
I always loved Soul Train. It was the black American Bandstand, with cheezy dancing, bad lipsyncing, tasteless period fashion, and lots of shameless promotion. I would (and still do when I see the reruns) look for the solitary white dancer in the crowd trying to act soulful. I suppose it is also important to point out that it started here in Chciago. Where else really? LouieB
kidsmoke
So sad. Rest in peace, Don.
LouieB
Some info from the Chicago Trib on Cornelius, I find it strange that more folks haven't posted up here. LouieB

Where else really? LouieB I remember seeing the Reverend Al Green back in the day. Soul Train came on right after American Bandstand in my hometown. Everything I know about music I learned at the hands of Don Cornelius, Dick Clark, Don Kirchner and The Wolfman.
Doug C
I found this to be an interesting read: http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2012/02/01/146225653/why-don-cornelius-matters I had know idea that he did Soul Train without white money backing him. I laughed at how James Brown couldn't believe it.

bböp
I got the chance to see Mr. Cornelius in person last year in Chicago at the Siskel Film Center when they screened a Soul Train documentary that I guess had also aired on VH1 as part of the 40th anniversary Soul Train celebrations. Anyway, he looked somewhat frail physically but his mind still seemed pretty sharp. Sad to hear the circumstances of his passing. Tried to get him to sign an old Soul Train comp LP I had, but his entourage was having none of it. Oh well. RIP to a man who had such a big impact on the lives of so many. Soul Train line forever! LouieB
I have had the unfortunate experience at various times of my life to have to be in a soul train line. (At weddings, parties, etc. not on the show obviously) Yikes. No soul on this end. LouieB
