An Essential Autumn Playlist

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

A new group I saw this week from Vermont called Alpenglow has just put out an ep called Solitude.  It has autumn written all over it.  HEM's Eveningland in its entirety is a great fall album as well.

Great call with Alpenglow. Saw them open for Lucius in Toronto on Friday and they were fantastic. Reminded me a little bit of Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear who also fit well with fall.

oh  - Deep Dark Woods - good call. That song Ballad of Frank Dupree would be perfect coming up on Remembrance Day.

Donna, not sure if you've had a chance to check out Evening Hymns:

I'm kinda obsessing over their latest - Spectral Dusk

I sing these hymns to let you in

I shout these words to left you go

You are Arrows tipped with Pine

Shot through chests and left behind

Color me intrigued! That was very autumnal, and simply gorgeous. I'll have to listen to more of them. Thanks Lizish!

I second the Deep Dark Woods, great call for Fall.

Been listening to Wilco mixes lately, definitely would include on this list:

Wishful Thinking

Muzzle of Bees

Hell is Chrome

Ashes of American Flags

Impossible Germany

Far, Far Away

Pieholden Suite

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

Laminated Cat

Reservations

Black Moon

Less Than You Think

Radio Cure

Sunken Treasure (feels like a late fall/almost Winter cold, brisk day)

Also, I haven't listened to Pot Kettle Black in a long time, and I wouldn't list it here - has more of a Spring feel to it. Let me just say I'm ashamed to admit that I had forgotten what a great song it is!

That's crazy -- I made a nearly identical mix yesterday! Also tossed in a few Mermaid Avenue and early Golden Smog tracks.

:D I didn't have any Smog mixed in, but I did have California Stars!

I did as well. I can't help but include "Pecan Pie" in an autumn playlist, but I also think a song like "Please Tell My Brother" is appropriate for autumn and the holiday season. That sense of longing, missing family members, and reaching out to people in the midst of the usual chaos of life. And "Long Time Ago" has a feeling of nostalgia, recollecting childhood memories and such -- another thing I seem to do more during the fall.
