CDs are the source used to create compressed files (e.g., MP3s). MP3s are compressed versions of CD tracks, and are therefore, by their very nature, inferior copies of CD files, even at super-high bitrates. Simply put, CD tracks contain more information than compressed files. Though the aural differences between CD tracks and high-bitrate MP3s may be minimal to the point of indistinguishable, there is a lot more audio information on a CD than in a set of MP3s ripped from that CD. DVD-Audio and SACD are higher-capacity storage formats that offer even more audio information, and therefore ca

Virtually all of my digital files are OGGs. If I had it to do over again, I might stick with MP3, but only because the oft-promised ubiquity of OGG never quite materialized. I naïvely assumed that OGG would quickly be supported by all of the major portable player manufacturers, but that didn't happen. You can get players that play OGG, but Apple has never added OGG support for the iPod (though you can replace the native firmware with third-party stuff and get them to work). That has kept me out of the iPod game all these years, and that's kinda too bad. Nonetheless, I love my OGGs. I'm not

It means they're as good as you're going to get from MP3s. I don't know if it's even possible to rip MP3s at a higher bitrate. Maybe it is, but the ripping software I'm familiar with tops out at 320 in their bitrate settings. MP3s are a compressed format, but at high bitrates like 320, it becomes virtually impossible for human ears to detect the compression that many people can discern at lower bitrates. Also: What are OGG files?

The CD will always be better, but the difference between it and properly ripped 320 kbps MP3s is indistinguishable to most humans.

Cool to hear the perspective of a "new" fan. Welcome to the board. Far and away the best thing on the album, in my opinion.

No, you don't.

link FDA panel votes to eliminate Vicodin, Percocet Deadly overdoses of acetaminophen, narcotics are cited in recommendation The Associated Press updated 3:31 p.m. ET, Tues., June 30, 2009 ADELPHI, Md. - Government experts say prescription drugs like Vicodin and Percocet that combine a popular painkiller with stronger narcotics should be eliminated because of their role in deadly overdoses. A Food and Drug Administration panel on Tuesday voted 20-17 that prescription drugs that combine acetaminophen with other painkilling ingredients should be pulled off the market. The FDA has a

Not to go all Debbie Downer on you, but it isn't truly over until Pawlenty signs the election certificate. The CNN piece mentions that he recently said he would if the Minnesota Supreme Court declared Franken the winner, but stories I've read elsewhere mention that Pawlenty said he would sign it if the court ordered him to, and they did not do so. Ergo, this still has the potential to drag on longer ... but at this point Pawlenty would be a fool not to certify Franken. edit: Lauren beat me to it.

You haven't shown anything in this thread except your own penchant for bellyaching. I'd respectfully suggest that you not dig this hole any deeper, but I doubt you'd follow my advice. So by all means, tell us again how Wilco are "anti-fan." Better yet, call Tweedy a "self-important whiner" again. The best laughs come from irony.

I ordered mine on May 19. Got an e-mail this morning saying it had shipped on 6/26. Why the four-day delay for the message? And why would my order, placed almost a month before bleedorange's, ship two days later? Fuckers.
-
I've cracked up several times today at the idea that someone can be "pretentious" in planning tour stops.
-
Call me crazy, but I think the loyal pre-order fans should be a higher priority. Truthfully, I don't really give a fuck if this arrives tomorrow or the next day or next week, just so long as it arrives. I might feel differently if I hadn't already listened to the album dozens of times.

Wait ... they're the record company, and they had a "delay" with some of the vinyl? Nobody else seemed to have that problem.

They still haven't charged my card for my vinyl order. Not looking good to be here by tomorrow.

I just got off the phone with Glenn, and he said they're never playing San Diego again, all because of you.

If there's a silver lining to this loss, it's that we won't have to hear the Brazilians bitching about the goal they were robbed of. (Which, incidentally, they were definitely robbed of -- it was clearly all the way across the line before Howard batted it up into the crossbar.)

I should mention that my post wasn't aimed solely at you ... it was a reaction to many things that have been posted in this thread -- your post just happened to be the one I replied to.

That's too bad. I don't bear the guy any ill will, but now my television might stop shouting at me quite so much. RIP, loud dude.

But what about the art a person creates before the bad behavior takes over? Are you going to tell me that Michael Jackson's work as a ten-year-old kid with the Jackson 5 is now somehow tarnished because he became a child molester as an adult? Are you suggesting that Thriller is tarnished because of behavior Jackson engaged in later? Believe me, I'm not excusing anything Jackson did, but I think it's unfair to crumple up and throw away his work because of his personal failings. If his music creeps you out now because of what you know about how he lived, that's fine -- you have every right to

Hey Jay, glad to see you're playing a show in SD on 7/15.
