  1. So is Under the Banner of Heaven. The chapter where Krakauer explores the boundary between bizarre faith/belief and delusion is fascinating.
  2. Only you could connect the dots so well through obscure European references. Wilco, c'est coq!
  3. Just to torment you Paul! It should have been written in French as well. (BTW, did you have any Poulet Frit Kentucky?)

    Top 5

    1. David Cronenberg in To Die For 2. Genevieve Bujold in Last Night 3. Joey Ramone in Hard Core Logo 4. Joey Ramone in Roadkill 5. Jello Biafra in Highway 61
  5. That's really sweet. Especially given the fact that someone had written "cock" on it. I remember lying on the beach watching an international fireworks competition one summer, and when "O Canada" was played only a few people in the crowd bothered to stand up. My friends and I figured that they must be American tourists. As long you don't use the National War Memorial as a urinal on Canada Day, it's all good.
  6. Thanks for the update Paul. I'm really going to be jealous when you head east to Montr
  7. Maybe Paul has come down with a case of "Canadian politeness."
  8. I stayed up all night reading Into Thin Air because I couldn't fall asleep until the survivors got off the mountain.
  9. He looks like a cross between Neil Young on the TTN tour (w/o the shades) and Steve McBean from Black Mountain. Obviously subtle CanCon references intended to win over audiences on the almost Trans-Canada tour.
  10. I'm Your Man Although I'm still convinced that only Leonard Cohen himself can sing these songs (I could have done without Nick Cave's cheesy performance of "I'm Your Man" in particular), Rufus Wainwright comes awfully close. I also enjoyed his story about meeting Leonard for the first time.
  11. Sounds amazing. I wish I had been there to hear it myself, but this is the next best thing. Thanks Paul!
  12. Ouch! Maybe Jeff can take up nordic walking instead. Apparently, the sport hasn't taken off in North America because there isn't a celebrity like Oprah to endorse it (yet). The dork factor is kinda high, but it's a good way to stay fit as you recover from an injury like that. I just bought a pair of OS2 trekker poles and it's actually a pretty good workout. Chimo, Paul! I hope the travel guide to Canada is serving you well in my absence. Just sprinkle a few "inuksuks," "ookpiks," and "chinooks" into the conversation and you'll fit right in. Have fun in Edmonton tonight. I wonder
  13. More please! I was lucky enough to catch Nels perform "Electric Ascension" w/OrkestRova at the Cultch last night. (I'm going to have to dust off my Coltrane albums.) Nels was the only performer who received spontanious applause after his solo. It was intense... at times, he looked like he was being electrocuted. I thought my head was going to explode. Awesome!
  14. No animals were harmed in the writing of this review.
  15. I love this town. Where else can you dine alfresco on beautiful summer evening, then casually stroll into the venue barely 10 min before the show and still find great seat in the fourth row? It's times like this that Vancouver really lives up to it's "Lotusland" reputation and the gloomy months of rain that we endure every winter are temporarily forgotten. The Vancouver East Cultural Centre was a Methodist church in a former life, and with its seating stretched to capacity to accomodate 300 devoted followers, this was the perfect setting to practice my own religion. I tend to be picky abo
  16. I died a little bit inside just thinking about that.
  17. I really enjoyed it. It's kind of like a nihilistic Microserfs. It's also a wicked satire of various Vancouver subcultures. (You'll have to come visit us someday so I can give you the Coupland tour. ... I actually work across the street from Electronic Arts, in Burnaby.) Coupland unlocks levels in a game called life
  18. Definitely! My favourite album is For the Roses because it reminds me of the Sunshine Coast (in British Columbia) where she probably wrote most of those songs. I think she still has some property near Halfmoon Bay because a friend of mine ran into her in line at the grocery store a few years ago. "I'm looking way out at the ocean Love to see that green water in motion ... Fresh salmon frying And the tide rolling in" "It was just the arbutus rustling And the bumping of the logs And the moon swept down black water Like an empty spotlight" "I run in the woods I spring from the bo
  19. Unfortunately, women seem to have a much shorter shelf life commercially. As you can see from the Paste list, it's still a boy's club... and quite a few of those guys haven't done all that much in the last decade or so. Joni Mitchell isn't modest (I'm sure she would put herself in the top 5, if not higher! ) and she speaks her mind without apology. I've always loved the really bitchy interview she did for W a few years ago, when she claimed to be "quitting the music business." I think she belongs up there with the greats. (Jeff too!)
  20. Discography Don't be dissing Joni. She's not just that barefoot hippie chick from 1968 any more than Dylan is just that guy who wrote "Blowin' in the Wind."
  21. The perfect way to spend a long weekend. I splurged on a hardcover copy so that I can get him to sign it when he does an in-store in Vancouver next month.
  22. I just did a little detective work and almost every decent venue in the city is booked solid from June 23 - July 2 because of the @#$% Jazz Festival (including the Commodore Ballroom ). The Orpheum appears to be free on June 27th, but it takes 11+ hours to drive from Vancouver to Calgary so that might be cutting it a bit close. (???) Basically, we could be screwed.
  23. Patience, Grasshopper. I'm sure a Vancouver date is coming soon (I'm crossing my fingers for the Commodore Ballroom). Hopefully, they can squeeze in Victoria as well. BTW, Nels Cline is scheduled to play the Vancouver International Jazz Fest on June 23 & 25. Hmm...
