  1. here's a well thought of budget phono preamp: http://www.spearitsound.com/Cambridge_Audi..._Audio_540p.asp
  2. from what i've read i wouldn't use glass cleaner or 100% alcohol either. maybe 10% alcohol in deionized water. there are lots of "recipes" on the internet. and the turntable that has a usb connection still has a needle. in fact all turntables except the laser turntable have needles, or styli if you prefer. and here's the price list on the laser turntable: Model Speed (rpm) Disc Size (inches) Price LT-1LRC 33, 45 7", 10", 12" US $15,000 LT-1XRC 33, 45, 78 7", 10", 12" $17,000 LT-2XRC 33, 45, 78 7", 8", 9", 10", 11", 12" $19,000 Declicker Noise Reduction in Real Time $2,800 HW-16.5
  3. if you are referring to the laser turntable, i don't believe it has yet been released despite being shown at ces, etc for several years. reviewers suggest it is very sensetive to any solid debris but transmits very little surface noise and handles minor scratches well. price tag is mutlipe thousands of dollars, so even if it has been released it's not on my shopping list as i've got mouths to feed.
  4. or buy this : http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_det...ction=equipment hahaha!
  5. http://www.recordtech.com/customers.htm here's the rti list of customers. you might find it interesting to compare with your vinyl. btw, that califone does sound good. i was bummed that the new yo la tengo didn't sound that much better on vinyl, though, and it was pressed by rti.
  6. i doubt the weight. that usually causes tracking problems, skipping, etc. although if it's too heavy it could change the vertical tracking angle which could in turn lead to some alteration to the sound. but maybe someone knows a little more about this than me will refute me. the vinyl asylum at the audioasylum boards is a good source of help as are the stevehoffman.com forums.
  7. yeh, i started that being there thread. interesting enough i'm nearly 100% positive that the problem with my copy of being there was not a pressing issue as i've never heard anything like it before on vinyl. it sounded like tape being eaten in a bad cassette player. alas, noone else seems to have that problem so maybe i'm wrong. i have to disagree on sundazed. i've heard of lots of problems with their stuff and my yhf copy is warped pretty bad. the company that pressed agib , called RTI, seems to have the best reputation going now. i bought my first album in the early seventies and i just
  8. so here's one more folowup. my vinyl cleaning practice is as follows: about 6-10 drops of record research labs superwash scrubbed along the grooves bidirectionally with a mobile fidelity brush. i then put some nitty gritty fluid on the machine brush head and vacuum as directed by the company. if i see some lint on the lp before playing i use a carbon fiber brush to remove it. any dry brushing has the chance to add static though. new vinyl should not have much surface noise, especially after cleaning. it is probably static or maybe something on the stylus. don't forget to clean the stylu
  9. ira kaplan of yo la tengo ain't new but he was an unknown guitar god to me until i saw them on this tour, and i even own a couple of their albums. simply amazing sounds he's getting out of that axe of his.
  10. the carbon fiber brush is supposed to be static free but i've found mine has added static when i've used it. i invested in a nitty gritty vaccum and it's done a good job reducing surface noise but it is a little pricey. i just read about someone using a humidifier in the room to decrease static electricity. another idea is to use a small spritz of deionized water with the carbon fiber brush, but wait a minute or two to play to allow the water to dry. there's always a zerostat gun as well.
  11. From Son Volt's web site: Chris Masterson Joins Son volt Austin TX
  12. pitchfork had an article or interview a week or two ago and they are still writing and recording it sounds like. i'll ask the band next time i see them around.
  13. seems i noticed a subtle difference as well but it was a few weeks ago and it'll be a while before i'll be able to spin it again. i agree that the yhf vinyl is a step up sound wise compared to the cd.
  14. is a woman is a beautiful album. the song my blue wave chokes me up every time. it is a quiet listen though. and features piano more prominently than the others. melancholia.... what another man spills is my favorite and is just reissued on cd. wagner still has his voice on that one and can do the falsetto singing on "give me your love" nixon has the euro "hit" "up with people" and is a very solid cd but i don't pull it out as much as thriller. on thriller they have a poppier sound with a couple of covers of east river pipe songs. the the last half gets all spacey and stoned. their firs
  15. which albums do you have as i'll agree, that some are very rarely played by me either? however, live they groove.
  16. i'll play how about: gideon the way that he sings and ...wait for it.... cobra
  17. thanks. is it a recent pressing, or an older one?
  18. unfortunately, my vinyl collection was ruined when the ex mother in law decided to store it in the attic. and no that's not why i dumped the previous wife maybe wilco will go with included download codes with the vinyl like matador did with the last ylt lp.
  19. "warmth" when describing a recording usually refers to the lack of high end harshness with maybe a slight boost in the low mid end. it has nothing to do with the performance itself which is "cold" in places, seeming detatched as you describe. so it can be both "warm" and "cold" at the same time as these terms are actually describing different aspects of the recording. "warm" recordings are often found with analog tube gear like they've been using at sear sound and the lack of overcompression in the mastering stage.
  20. did you ever notice that glitch in the first part of "misunderstood?" maybe about 2 minutes in. i think there has been more than one us pressing of this so it may be distinct to the more recent pressing.
  21. you mention that others think the album sounds warm but you think it sounds cold. i think you are stating that the performance feels sterile and detached which i agree with in places. however, i think that's what they were going for, especially with spiders. the reason people say the album sounds warm is due to the way it was recorded/mixed/mastered. there's very little brittleness and a big midrange with more bass than most of my other cds. it is a very warm recording. and with very little added compression. compare to the band of horses cd for a harsh and sterile recording for example.
  22. finally got a turntable after 15 years without one. picked up the readily available wilco lps and was bummed that the pressing of being there was screwed up during "misunderstood." during the quiet part about 2 minutes in there is sound drop out and then it's garbled. having had the cd for over ten years i ken this wasn't right. fortunately, my local record dealer let me return it. i later ordered the new 180g import pressing which states "from the original master tapes" on the label. it sounds much different than the us pressing and teh cd. much more dynamic and in your face. the cymbals are
  23. well that's about 200 less than last year. i guess that is a break by truckers' standards.
  24. i was not expecting so much rock either, this being my first show. now i've got to work on picking up some more of their back catalog.
