that reads like a hymn! i thought it was the cold war kids originally given this thread and didn't even catch it as jeff's song. doh!

i like some of the starbucks comilations as they feature rare or prev unreleased tracks by bands i like, old 97's, calexico, neko case, etc. however, starbucks is a major corp and has caused many independent coffee places to close. seems like we've gotten a mixed message from the band : support indy record stores but sip corporate coffee. not that i have a big problem with that, just an observation.

no duh. i'm not saying jeff meant anything religious by the lyrics, i merely thought they could be interpreted as religious as opposed to the lyrics i found for the cold war kids' songs, in which i could find no religious connotations. like i said, i have no dog in this fight. (i bet PETA loves that saying)

really? i'm not very religious but it was the first thing i thought of with the song. "light" often being used in religious writing to represent god/heaven.

this song has more religious overtones than the ones i've heard by cold war kids. not that i really have a dog in this fight as i find cold war kids unoffensive at best. i think many of the white religious rockers come from a fundamentalist background and that comes through in their lyrics and is probably what turns off those who've posted as such. they come across as evangelical, rather than merely spiritual as do the christian blues, r&b, and reggae classics. true , true. the small indy stores in sc aren't so lucky. are y'all just "in" with the band or did you actively pursue getting the promos?

i was little bummed about that too.

that bonus disc is only at the those indy stores that pay their dues to be in the indycoalition or whatever its called. now the cd/dvd collection can be carried by anyone so you can blame the mgmt for that one.

this was discussed in another thread previously but imo, the import is brighter and more in your face while the original vinyl is more laid back and the bass a little muddy, the cymbals more smeared. the original sounds like the cd and the new import is more lively and probably more what the original recording sounded like, warts and all. most of the time i prefer the new remaster but it can be a little shrill on my stereo which tends to highlight a bright sounding record. my two cents.

the import is not a gatefold and came with those nice paper and plastic audiophile record sleeves. the original pressing has paper sleeves but i can't remember if it's a gatefold. maybe someone else knows?

i disagree but nels does have a signature sound and i can see how some might not like it. i also know he can mix it up a lot more than we've heard on most of sbs and kicking television. his work on "airline to heaven" is sweet and much more subtle than jay's live versions i've heard. i'll also add, check out the session work nels has done, listed extensively on his website , and you'll see how talented and adaptable he is.

"all my firends" and "north american scum" are worth it, alone. and if you want a little bakersfield styled country see if you can track down a two dollar pistols cd, especially "you ruined everything."

i'm about tweedy's age and band on the run was one of my first albums and i still love it. looking at the comments in the articles it sounds like that greatest hits album got him through a tough time and has a place in his heart. didn't mean to step on any toes. my last order from acoustic sounds for 4 records only cost 5.50 shipping and was going to be over 13 dollars on elusive disc. it arrived in about 3 days too. just passing along my limited experience that may be helpful. i didn't price the order on musicdirect.

i prefer acoustic sounds or elusive disc and have had very fast delivery from these vendors. i have found acoustic sounds to have the cheapest shipping charges of any of the "big three" online vinyl retailers.

so i broke down and put the cd in rather than wait for my turntable to get fixed. i was certain something was wrong after a few songs, nels was on the wrong side. long story short, i've had my cd left and right cables switched for 5 months now and not noticed it till now. duh. so i'm listening from the start again, except with wife interruptions, and it sounds a lot better.

not to threadcrap but i find the avetts to be an acquired taste which i haven't developed yet. they are very talented at what they do, though. very good song writing.

i'm not so certain that the critics didn't just have mp3 versions as a local rock radio dj here in charleston refused to play anything off the new release as he only had a mp3 copy, no cd. either they weren't sent a cd or it didn't arrive, and this is a station that's promoted the band since the beginning. in addition (and this is apples and oranges) but wxpn was playing a digital copy of the ponys "turn the lights out" as noted by some really bad digital hiccups which were also on the download i got from matador when i bought the vinyl. so the use of digital copies for radio play is definit
