http://www.recordingeq.com/EQ/req1099/ultimate.htm a good discussion of analog vs digital recording and mixing.

http://www.cloud9recording.com/pages/jh24andprotools.html the main thing i've read previously is that when tubes distort they give off odd order harmonics, primarily 3rd order, whereas solid state gives off second order harmonics. supposedly, the odd order harmonics are more pleasing and less grating to the human ear than second order harmonics. i'll keep looking for some more links to make more sense.

you asked and very slowly i'll track down the links: http://www.great-music.net/analog.htm just say when you've had enough

they played it in madison of that year but i don't have a soundboard copy.

my god, i go and try and escape all the negativism on the duke basketball boards and find someone talking wilco out their behind. (that's a joke if'n you've ever seen the espn commercial.) please post links of said talk with sources and then i'll give an opinion.

hey i'm sober now and i still say check out jubilee dive by the drams. it's been completely ignored by near everyone in the media but "Hummalong" and "Unhinged" are great rockers to blare out the car window. Some Summerteeth styled poppy mid tempo numbers, too. I think New West did no promotion on this cd as it's too good to leave off any kind of top 50 or top 100 of 2006.

and you know this based on a stream or a supposed cd quality copy on oink?

all very excellent albums may i add: grandaddy (as was mentioned previously) except i'd avoid the diary of toddzilla given your tastes calexico (including the iron and wine collaboration) patty hurst shifter (just good ol' rock n roll from raleigh, nc) two cow garage (hard rock with twang) the drams(the remains of slobberbone but you'd hardly know it, a lot like summerteeth) probably my best recommendation given what i can tell about your tastes.

i whole heartedly applaud you for supporting the local business. unfortunately, our local stores have a poor indy and foreign selection. and my old favorite store was just held up by four 9-12 year old kids a few months back. wouldn't want to get whacked by a rug rat!

yhf and agib are pretty well thought of on audiophile forums. i use agib when i'm audtioning new equipment or trying out a tweek on my hi-fi. i've also had a guitarist/sound board guy marvel at how well it was recorded and he doesn't care for wilco. (blasphemy i know) the reason summerteeth sounds so loud is compression i imagine. hopefully, that was from the label wanting a "hit" and not from the band wanting the compression. jeff seems to value analog recording and each succesive recording has sounded better than the previous so hopefully that bodes well. sbs sounds pretty dynamic on the s

cmj is running a poll on sbs now. not that it means anything but i thought it was interesting. for all i know 15 people have voted. the results so far: Love it! - 44 % Eh, could be better but I'm still excited about the album. - 21% Terrible. What happened Tweedy? - 13% No opinion. - 20%

they'd sound like that track on the alejandro tribute cd which rocked in a droney kinda way. i had such high hopes.

i had read the reviews and extensively previewed it but never got nightripper (i think that's the name of the cd) pretty cool though. just don't listen to that much bass so put it back on the shelf. haven't heard any of the other releases though and i imagine live it could be a whole 'nother thang.

about my third sober listen through the album now and i'm digging it. pretty mellow but it could take off live. these guys are so freakin' talented. never when i picked up a.m. back in the 90's would i think jeff would have taken me for such a great ride. before i get back to imitating glenn's drum rolls on my belly for my infant daughter's amusement, has anyone heard if they might do a surround release for this album. dualdisc, sacd or dvd-a? also any news on a vinyl release?

Songs played live recently that didn't make the cut

if it wasn't for the faces, that photo reminds me of an a.m. era photo. -

got it. actually i got it halfway through my post! -
i got so drunk on dark heineken and then puked and rallied for r.e.m. playing a 500 seat theater. yes, i am old enough to be your father but i doubt i am given my lack of luck with the girls at that age.

that was on the bridge ep which was download only in the usa but was hardcopy in australia i think. so technically it had been released previously and was later included on an album. however, the agib version is the only hardcopy version released in the usa. the live version also was on the agib bonus download and kt, too. so yeh i guess it's surprising they dropped it from this release. i knew something was missing on sbs. they should have used some backward samples or something to sneak it in. -
being there yhf afib the two loose fur albums any news on a releases date for sbs vinyl?
-
that's setting up some expectations. i have drawn the line with this one and am not going out buying it blindly (or deaf-ly as it may be). the single with the horns did nothing to excite me so i'll check out the son volt site and try some streaming given the high praise.

true, it did cross my mind they might be thinking of that but looks like they had tons of material. weren't there a few more songs jeff played solo recently that were new? -

that's already been released on a "b-side" of a single five years ago or so hasn't it? (i realize there are no b-sides on a cd single but thought that would make sense.) -
well, dave pirner does sing on that chill out tent song. in a pitchfork interview, the hold steady cite soul asylum as one of their big influences.

enjoy. and definitely try to track down agib on vinyl.
