  1. Listening to Pablo Honey is like listening to the Beatles before they realized they were musicians.

It's not a good rock record; it's just a fun mess with the eversopopular Creep.

You can have all the fun you want with Pablo Honey, but it's like tipping for a cheap fix on the corner of 8 Mile and Woodward.

I could make more metaphors, but I could waste less space by suggesting a revisiting of the rest of Radiohead's catalogue.

And if you still want a good rock record from Radiohead, then choose The Bends.

i think pitchfork could use another master of the metaphor. like they don't have enough already.

when first getting into a band, i happen to think it's usually better to start from the beginning and follow their progression. i believe that the bends is a terrific rock record and one of their best over all. but pablo honey was the beginning and it's not an album that deserves the snide remarks from those who jumped on the bandwagon after OK computer. i'm not saying you are one of those fans...but, i digress. pablo is where it all STARTED. obviously, they've PROGRESSED from there. there's no reason to undeservedly put that album down. i still think it is a great rock record and a debut that deserves much more than derogatory comments from the self professed-purveyors of what is or isn't "cool." NOW. this is just my opinion.

Do you also put down wilco's debut in like manner? even though AM was recorded at a different time and at a different place in their current musical progression, i still like hearing it from time to time. the fact that wilco has been playing some of those old songs on their current tour would indicate that they certainly aren't embarrassed by their debut. why the need to diss a bands humble beginnings? i just don't get it.

  2. Someday, unless you are killed by a jealous husband or wife, you will be a 58 year-old fart.

I don't imagine one's world or life should end with a number being attached to you.

Springsteen happens to be in a very productive stage of his career. Since 2005 he has produced a solo acoustic record followed by a worldwide tour; a large band folk record followed by a worldwide tour; a live record of the folk record; an e-street band record and major tour.

He calls scoreboard on your slacker ass. :monkey

    mr porkchop jackass,

you obviously take things pretty personal in regards to mr springsteen. not that there's anything wrong with that. not everybody's a fan of bruce...deal with it.

my 58 year-old fart comment has to do with the box that corporate radio puts artists in. "romeo...throat of gold...little too old..." awww f*ck it. why bother.

and no, tunnel of love didn't include glory days. never said that did i? it's all about reading comprehension. check into it skippy.

go kick your dog or something.

  3. Paul Di'Anno or the other dude?

i do like the first two by maiden with di'anno, especially killers. quite different from the dickinson era, which peaked imo with piece of mind. they became too much about the show after that. i did like brave new world quite a bit. last time i saw them was on that tour in 2000. that's the last "metal" concert i went to.

  4. I guess they picked the right season to not play both Texas and Oklahoma. Might just land them a BCS berth (assuming they get past Mizzou, OSU, et al).

the schedule is definately in their favor. even so, the way they are playing it probably wouldn't matter if Texas and Oklahoma were on the schedule. they are playing with supreme confidence, have had no significant injuries and pay no mind to their bumbling past. they are just plain getting it done. i can't wait till the mizzou game, but they are just focused on the huskers this saturday.

    one game at a time.

  5. I like Pablo, Bends, OK and nothing after. I think changing with each album can be a good thing (ie: Wilco) but I just never could buy into the direction they took. I tried, I really did. I'm not a Radiohead basher at all, they just make music for other people now. Just not for me.

  6. They have sold several million copies. I think it is pathetic - all of these dudes doing cover albums. I mean - I like the occasional cover - but not this sort of thing.

Maybe we should blame this on Tony Bennett? Didn't he kick off this whole trend?

  7. It's all the rage these days - I believe due to the success of Rod Stewart's American Songbook series.

You know what's weird? My Mom has those Rod Stewart American Songbook CD's. MY FREAKIN' MOM!!!

    WTF?

She never knew who the hell Rod Stewart was till he came out with those.

  8. My wife and I walked out of Anchorman after only about 15 minutes and caught a different movie. I don't even remember what movie we ended up seeing now. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for Will Ferrell at the time. However, Anchorman is now one of my favorite comedys of all time thanks to finally giving it another shot on DVD.

  9. I was a teenager in the 80's and didn't like anything after High 'n' Dry. They were just too slick musically for my taste. It just got worse from there. I thought Pyromania had a cool album cover, but that was about it.

As far as the Leppard "covers" album. Kind of sad that a band that age resorts to a cover album that late in their career. Nice choice of songs, but I prefer the original versions done by the original artists.

  10. Just like every Right-wing talk show host.

We're all different in the exact same ways.

Oh, and I am not defending the tactics, just making an observation.

no disagreement there. i was merely referencing the fact the the last two media blowups regarding coulter were from HIS show.

any show regardless of political bent needs to question why the hell they would give such a lowlife a platform to spew her opinions.

  11. "Though it must kind of suck to be a Hoosier fan right now."

wha? we are pre-season #9'ish for bball. and, the football team is doing better than it has in 10 years or so. r u talking about knight being gone? if so, i was bummed at first, but now i am OK w/ it. he's a dick.

actually, i was referring to this: IU should fire Sampson

speaking of newpaper links, the kc star's music blog has wilco video for a few songs from the kc crossroads gig. here's the link for it: wilco in kc

    hey hey-

well i've done/seen pretty much all that except for, of course the sprint center -i was at wilco, but i'm keeping my fingers crossed for a hannah montana ticket :) - and, also of course the bball hall of fame isn't open yet... but, as a HUGE college hoops fan, this will be cool.

It's officially open to the public tomorrow.

and, i'm gonna have to call you out on the Zona Rosa call. what shops are there for MEN? i live right by it, and was at Marshall's today. i like marshalls for the most part, and the happy hour at hereford house. but, with all the little girl clothes stores and not much in the way of "good eats"... ain't much going down for the dudes.

I'll confess, I haven't made it there yet myself. I keep hearing about it though. I'm in Johnson County, KS and we've already got a crapload of shopping/restaurants around here.

ok and with the heritage fests? i don't know if you get the star, but, a gal wrote in with the same complaint i have. i went to the irish fest at crown center a couple years ago... me being irish and all. well, there was not one irish beer there and no irish food. it was coney dogs and coors light. there was, of course, the cute little dancer girls and ppl hawking celtic t-shirts... but, the folks and i were disappointed and went to mortons for steaks.

I'm Irish too and attended the Irish Fest this year. There was plenty of authentic Irish food and Guinness on tap. The previous complaints must have been heard. Lots of authentic Irish Bands as well.

university of kansas can SUCK IT, i'm a hoosier fan. i've got two degrees from there, so pfffft. no jayhawks please. do. not. want.

I completely understand. Though it must kind of suck to be a Hoosier fan right now.

maybe i've been in culture shock here, as i've lived for quite some time in california, in a secluded beach town with more nature than you can handle. it's just that IN MY OPINION, and from MY EXPERIENCES, the two other towns i've lived in the most, which are bloomington, indiana and morro bay, california, are much more up my alley. i would love to meet some "cool" people here tho. i certainly haven't yet.

If I wasn't originally from here and had lived in a beach town. I would probably initially share the same opinion. But if you are in an unfamiliar place for any length of time, it pays to see what's around you. It can help with the boredom.

It also doesn't help that I think KC is a shithole

Insulting the place that many Wilco fans on this board have chosen to live isn't a very nice thing to do nor is it a way to be taken seriously or to make friends.

    QUOTE(H to the ickle @ Oct 14 2007, 08:54 PM)

...I was out of that God-forsaken city 15 minutes after Spiders was done.

So, I guess you didn't make any new friends while you were here for the 6th time.

    QUOTE(H to the ickle @ Oct 15 2007, 09:34 PM)

I just don't like KC. It think it's stupidly laid out and has little to no personality. I've been there for probably six shows (including another Wilco show) and have never had a good time in the city (though the Wilco show was my first, so it was great).

You've been here for 6 shows and NEVER had a good time?...really? Obviously you weren't shown around town by someone who actually lives here. I mean you wouldn't have friends who live in a "shithole" now would you? Say what you will about urban sprawl, but there are many sights that are worth seeing in the K.C. Metro area. Even places that would be considered "scenic" in any part of the country.

I think the main reason I didn't have as much of a killer time at this show was just the fact that the set was almost exactly (with a few great exceptions) the same as the set they played in Columbia, MO on September 19. I was floored by that set (and the venue and the crowd and the band's high spirits) and had been listening to the recording for weeks-- I was just expecting a little more variety.

I'm sorry the band didn't live up to your high standards regarding their set list. You seem to be in the minority in that opinion. I'm sorry you made the trip all the way here to have nearly the same great set played yet again. I'm mean...what a waste of time.

The band played amazingly and I never said I didn't have a great time. I only said that the show was my least favorite Wilco show I've attended. That's like saying it's my least favorite briefcase full of unmarked, non-consecutive, hundred dollar bills.

    :brow

Kansas City just rubs me the wrong way.

Seriously, I'm really sorry you feel that way. Maybe the seventh time is a charm?
