So if I want to buy a vinyl copy I'm going to have to essentially purchase the album twice (digital and LP) unless I just wait until the actual record comes out?  Lame.

Could you not stream the record till the LP comes out?

  2. This is officially announced on the band's website now. Digital only: "Yes, CD and LP editions are in the works, but we’ll spare you the supply chain talk."

I'm wary to make any predictions on the album sound based off this first single, Locator which was the first Schmilco song we heard, didn't really represent the sound of that album and Everyone Hides didn't really represent the sound of Ode to Joy.

    EDIT:

"The dynamic Chicago rock band Wilco returns with its 12th studio album, the first of its kind. Cruel Country is the band's exploration of the genre they've often been defined by but, until now, never fully embraced. The double album features 21 Jeff Tweedy-penned tracks, made almost entirely of live takes, created with all six members together in The Loft for the first time since the 2011 release The Whole Love."

I'm excited that the album was recorded with the band together in studio. I really appreciate the way albums like Sky Blue Sky sound.

If this album is actually going to be released on May 27, that suggests a digital release with physical media to follow later.  If a physical release is coming May 27, there should a pre-order already underway.

    As a non-streamer, I hope I'm wrong about this.

It seemed like the band was working on the record relatively recently... if that's true, with the delay in vinyl production I wouldn't expect anything till the end of the year at the earliest. Maybe CDs??

  4. I didn't start listening to Wilco till 2004, but it was an mp3 from Soul Seek of War on War that got me into the band. I wish I could remember what made me seek out Wilco... I think they were just one of those bands I heard buzz about and I was already listening to Elliott Smith, Pixies, etc, bands not totally removed from Wilco. I definitely remember buying the DVD to I Am Trying To Break Your Heart before I was super familiar with the album and watching it obsessively. Both the album and the movie were pretty formative for me. They inspired me to want to work in music as a recording engineer or producer, so that's what teenage me went to school for. Not to parents on VC: don't let your kids do this. Fortunately, that worked out for me because it did lead to my career in broadcasting, so if it wasn't for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot I don't know what I'd be doing.

It wasn't the lyrics that did it for me, though as I've gotten older I definitely appreciate the lyrics on the record and hold I Am Trying To Break Your Heart (the song) as the best example of Jeff's lyrical style. But for me what made YHF so intoxicating was the music, on one hand more of the songs sounded like old folk songs, but the production was so rich and lush, modern and classic at the same time. I use the word "texture" a lot but the instrumentation and production created a sonic texture in my mind I had never experienced anywhere else.

It was then and still is today my favourite record of all time.

  5. A few things I've found interesting:
-Nothing Up My Sleeve is a secondary title to Anniversary. Did we know this?

-The three versions of Laminated Cat will be the first official Wilco studio release of this song

-What is "American Aquarium"? I would have guessed an early IATTBYH but it's sequenced right after an alternate version of IATTBYH, so maybe not?

-Won't Let You Down is not included, unless it's under a different name

-The only way to get the WXRT songs on vinyl is from the 7LP set, which is missing a lot of the outtakes. As a collector, this is my worst nightmare.

  6. Hey friends, I've decided to gracefully bow out of SSF this year, just don't want to get stuck in a foreign country if I pick up COVID. I have an affordable AirBNB in Williamstown and I am cancelling right now, if anyone wants it, it should pop up in a few minutes.

I agree that people should have bought insurance, sadly it was only available to US citizens. I could not find cancel for any reason insurance in Canada :(

This sucks! Since the government is urging us not to travel, I wonder if you can make the case for your credit card to refund you?? We were suppose to see Wilco in Minneapolis in September, the border wasn't open yet and our credit card company told us they would have been able to help us (but we purchased over a year before, outside of the period where they'd support!)

  8. For context: I don't like the heat, resorts, or long plane trips so I was never going to go to this.

I know it's a hot button issue, with a lot of opinions both ways but "Front-facing resort staff are close to fully vaccinated" is a really weird line and a very interesting choice in a communication intended to put people at ease.
