  1. High five! I'm also an audio engineer, or at least, that's what I went to school for... Mastering is definitely the least understood part of making a record. And as you mentioned, it doesn't help when remastering and remix are often used interchangeably and remix can mean two different things!!

I definitely have some rose tinted glasses for YHF, I like the way it sounds. And unlike Being There or AM, which both sounded very much "of their time", so remasters made sense, YHF doesn't sound like anything else, 2002 or not. It's aged well IMO. But probably fair point about some things objectively being boxy or tinny. I'd argue it's part of the charm!

I don't know if there's any songs we haven't heard from that era, but definitely the AM, BT, ST boxes had surprises, so there could be. Even if what's on the "engineer demos" is all there is, I'd still find owning that stuff officially exciting. Corduroy Cutoff Girl, Venus Stopped The Train, Not For The Season, Alone, etc. But I wouldn't be surprised if there's at least some alternate mixes, takes, and demos that have never leaked. They worked on that record for a long time.

  2. If I was a betting man, which I am not, I would bet on the band releasing a new album this fall. As we know from TTS, they have obviously been recording it and there was a photo of Pat working in the studio with a session musician circling around. Assuming it's a real photo, we can tell that the album is, likely, pretty far along because using session musicians would probably be one of the later stages of tracking (you wouldn't hire a session musician for a song that could get scrapped or could get re-worked/re-recorded/etc, right?). I guess it's always possible they could release the album (digitally) in September and have YHF Deluxe in November, or vice versa, but I'd bet they wouldn't want to space the releases out a bit more. Though, Love is the King and Summerteeth Deluxe were a month apart.... so I guess it's possible. Looks like Summerteeth Deluxe was announced in early September (I made a thread on September 2nd) so we could hear soon. That said, compiling these sort of releases takes a lot of work. Last I heard record plants were backed up 8 - 9 months. If they were going for a 2021 release they would have had to have this finished only a few months after Summerteeth Deluxe was released to get it pressed in time, which makes me think this will probably be a 2022 release at the earliest.

I have to imagine YHF Deluxe is happening though, even if what has leaked is all there is, there's some very impressive unreleased music from that era. Plus I would die to hear an official release of live 4-piece WIlco from that era.

I remember Jeff stating that YHF can't be remastered due to something with the tapes or something along those lines.

Venus Stopped The Train was officially released by Jay Bennett.

I remember Jeff saying that on TTS but I believe he meant that the album couldn't be remixed since it was done on tape and so many elements were spliced together but I'm sure they have the stereo master tapes sitting around somewhere. And that's what mastering engineers use, a tape of the finalized mix, not the raw tapes where each instrument can isolated/adjusted. Could be a moot point because I don't believe the Summerteeth was remastered when it got the deluxe treatment anyways. Just one man's opinion but I'd argue that YHF probably doesn't need a remaster, it sounds just fine. Repress the album on a cool colour and add in a few discs of bonus stuff and everyone will be happy!

  3. I caught the end of the set with Nels. It feels like that Love is the King solo was made for Nels!! Too bad it wasn't a Wilco song though I guess the precedent has been set that a solo Jeff (or Tweedy band) song can become a Wilco song later on.....

There was some strange comments going on in chat that I normally don't notice. I saw someone accusing Nels of being a Trump supporter among other weird stuff. Too bad there's no way to create moderator roles on Instagram!

  4. Hey folks, just wanted to let everyone know that Alpha Bravo Charlie just hit 100 episodes!! We're doing 200 total songs, so we're officially half way done. The Wilco community has been so supportive of the show, I'll be so sad when it's over.

There's also another Wilco podcast now called Wilco Will Love You that if you like our show I recommend checking them out as well, they're great.

I think Jeff wants to hit 200 episodes before the band hits the road. I believe the plan is to return to some sort of format, once the touring ends. Susie addressed this in episode 191 from last Monday, if you want to hear her say it. I might be mixing up a detail or two...

No, that sounds familiar!! Thanks for the clarification!

If I'm not mistaken, you Canadians aren't even letting us regular folk from south of the border in yet (unless you're related to a Canadian or have some vital purpose, I guess)...

That's why I'm fully prepared to adopt each member of Wilco and their roadcrew!!

But in all seriousness, the border will be open soon, definitely by the time the fall tour starts. Unless things go sideways again........... but plenty of US bands have already announced Canadian shows.

I’m still updating the list after every show. Link to the list is in my signature below. Jeff has played My Darling twice: episodes 48 and 145.

    That's perfect!! Thank you Ziggy!

  8. Is someone still keeping track of all the songs performed on TTS??? Is there anyway to tell how many times My Darling has been performed? I know Jeff's done it at least once.

  9. Pat often gets overshadowed by Nels but he's such a great musician, it's really cool to hear him (and Jeff and Glenn of course) play Wilco songs in a stripped down setting like that.

Glad you were able to get started on vaccination. I have been worried about some friends in Canada. I was shocked when I learned that there was so much trouble with vaccinations in Canada. The government up there seems to usually have their act together.

It's not so much our current government's fault. At one point in the 20th century Canada was a world leader in manufacturing vaccines but a conservative government in the 80s ended that. It's usually not an issue but unfortunately SOME countries *coughcoughcough* have been hoarding COVID vaccines and only recently started sharing them. So we were limited on the countries we could receive from. I believe the plan is to become vaccine independent again, though of course that will take a few years. But now that we do have vaccine doses coming in at a good rate, the distribution seems to be going smoothly. Apparently in the older age groups the vaccine acceptance is as high at 90% so I suspect we won't run into too much vaccine hesitancy... fingers crossed.

  11. Shot one acquired last night! I was hoping for flu-like symptoms so I could take a guilt free day off work but no such luck. Arm is sore as heck though. I'm surprised you folks were able to get pictures of your shots, they were very strict about no photos in the shot area, probably since a medical area and there's privacy issues. It's ok though, I'm just happy to have my shot. My whole family has at least their first shot now except my wife but she gets hers on Wednesday.

  12. Recently I have watched:

    The Stand

-So, for any "normal" writer, the obvious thing to do with this concept would be to make a gritty story about living in a post-lethal pandemic world. And this has that. But it also has some of Stephen King's more.... bizarre stuff in it. In the first episode you're like "what? the virus is named Captain Tripps? lol wut" but by the end you'll think, all things considered, it's not that weird of a name. I've read The Dark Tower series and knew this would be connected and therefor get a little out there. I liked it! The mini series formula works way better than a 2 hour film and this made me excited for Wizard & Glass.

Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal

-I for one, hate the rich.

    Ted Lasso

-This is a show with a lot of heart. It was funny but also sweet. Ulimately, I think it's about leadership. It felt good to watch, sort of like Parks & Rec did. I highly recommend it!

To say kind of the same thing in a different way: Yeah it depends on your flavor. The album rundown was very accurate.

Recommended tunes? Hard to take them out of context from an album band, and Star Wars and Ode to Joy are such cohesive wholes, but if I had to pull some standouts:

-Wilco the Album- One Wing, You and I, Solitaire

-The Whole Love- Art of Almost, Whole Love, I Might, One Sunday Morning

-Star Wars- More, Cold Slope into King of You, Magnetized

-Schmilco- Cry All Day, Someone to Lose, Locator

-Ode to Joy- Before Us, Quiet Amplifier, Everyone Hides, Love is Everywhere

I'm sure many would dispute these selections, which is evidence that Wilco is a great band that provoke a lot of different takes on their catalog.

Yes, I like all your picks but most of mine would be different!

Wilco The Album: Bull Black Nova (out of respect for Vince), One Wing, Dark Neon (which is technically a bonus track but would be the best song on the record IMO)

The Whole Love: Whole Love, Born Alone, One Sunday Morning

Star Wars: Random Name Generator, Where Do I Begin, The Joke Explained

Schmilco: We Aren't The World, If I Ever Was A Child, Common Sense

Ode to Joy: Hold Me Anyway, Bright Leaves, An Empty Corner

  14. On a serious note, I just want to express what a treat it was to hear these three guys playing as a trio. We all know that Jeff and John go back nearly 30 years now so it's easy to think of Glenn as being relatively new but this year will mark his 20th in the band, and you could tell last night how much these three guys have grown together over the years... there's a lot of respect and friendship there, which as a fan, I love to see!

While I think Wilco's strength is in how great all six of them are together and I hope we don't ever see a line up change again, I did really enjoy hearing the songs stripped back to a three piece. We get to appreciate Jeff's guitar work when he plays solo but it was really cool to hear Glenn's drumming and John's bass and backing singing in this stripped down environment. I hope this is something they do a bit more of in the future, maybe if they do a scaled down SSF this fall, it could make a cool Sunday afternoon performance... maybe.
