  1. I finally caught up and watched this last night. Even through the live stream you could tell there was a bit of a disconnection  between the band and the audience. But I'm definitely glad to see things like this happening in this situation. I don't know how it is in the US but I know in the past 20 years or so most of the drive in movie theatres have shut down up here, it's too bad that some areas probably couldn't even attempt a show like this.

I really liked James' pedal steel work. I didn't know he could play pedal steel, did he do it on the Tweedy tour? I know that Jeff mimicked some pedal steel sounds on the Warm and Warmer albums, it'd be cool if we ever get a proper Tweedy band tour again, if James could arrange some of those licks onto pedal steel.

  2. That is a great quote from John and very exciting. Seems pretty clear that they have something planned!

I have to say, I imagine, after taking 2018 and the first half of 2019 off, this pandemic (and taking at least a year off of touring) was not at a great time financially for the guys. I know they don't make a ton of money off records these days but if they did a physical only version or put it up on Bandcamp instead of streaming I'm sure the fans would rally to help support them... if they felt like they needed it.

  3. Some handsome and talented person, who probably hosts a great Wilco podcast, who knows, asked on The Tweedy Show about the vinyl release for Love Is The King, Jeff said there will be another announcement soon but due to logistics they just want to get the record out. I'd have to listen again to get the exact wording but I think that was the jist of it.

  4. So how many of LitK songs have we heard? Links below.

01 Love Is the King (official release)

02 Opaline (on the Tweedy Show)

03 A Robin or a Wren (on the Tweedy Show)

04 Gwendolyn (on the Tweedy Show)

05 Bad Day Lately (on the Tweedy Show)

06 Even I Can See (on the Tweedy Show)

07 Natural Disaster (on the Tweedy Show)

    This is fantastic! Thank you!

  5. Hurry up and give me that special edition LP to order!!!!

    I jinxed it! Sorry everyone.

Vinyl obviously has some major delays these days. No CD is interesting, seems to me that getting a CD pressed in 2020 isn't much of an issue?? There must be factors I'm not aware of.

If there's no physical release for a late October album now, I can't imagine we'll get one in 2020, at least for vinyl. Hopefully this doesn't end up being another Record Store Day release.  :heartbroken

  6. I ran a pizza shop back in those days. We had two guys from NJ that hung out in the place about everyday. They were a real life version of Bill and Ted. I recall they used the term "poofter". And one of them carried around a B.C. Rich guitar.  I don't think I will watch the new one. Although I might if it shows up on Amazon Prime. I recall trying to watch Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. I could not get into it.

Poofter! That's great. To be fair, the new one is a significantly better movie than Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Worth a watch but maybe not the $20 rental price.

  7. How do I go back to the older episodes?

Also I often wonder why a bigger deal has never been made of the prominent hammer dulcimer sounds on AGIB. Maybe that was really the cimbalom.

Also my friend in high school interrupted a hammer dulcimer performance by shouting "I was hammered all summer too!"

Sorry I missed this! Older episodes are up on Spotify and Apple, a few other places too, there's links on abcwilco.com.

  8. I've listened to a number of episodes now, and have enjoyed it, but if I may I'd like to offer a bit of constructive criticism based on a couple things I noticed in the Art of Almost episode.

When talking about Glenn's contribution to the song they make a couple of unforced errors.  They say he plays a cimbalom.  They don't know what this is, and guess that it is some sort of cymbal.  That's not a bad guess based on its name, and I'm sure 99.9% of people in the world don't know what a cimbalom is (I didn't know for sure, and I'm a musician who has played in numerous school orchestras with well outfitted percussion departments) but it's actually a stringed instrument played with mallets, very similar to a hammer dulcimer.  A quick Google search would have allowed them to explain what this instrument is, maybe narrowed in on the sound it's contributing to the song, etc. This would have added some interesting content to the episode, which is better than guessing and being wrong.

Example of a cimbalom being played:

Another thing was their discussion of percussion in general.  They're right that listing "percussion" in album credits is ambiguous, and they describe it as anything having to do with rhythm.  This description is not correct.  In addition to rhythmic instruments, the percussion family includes many instruments used for melody and harmony, and others for sound effects (vibraslaps, for example).  One of the melodic percussion instruments Glenn uses is crotales, which are tuned metal discs and are used in a similar way as a xylophone or glockenspiel.  One example of his use of crotales is I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, which you can see below.

I enjoy the podcast and I'm glad it exists.  I hope this criticism won't be taken as anything other than suggestions.

That's a fair point, I typically will look at the rundown for who played what (if available... newer Wilco albums don't have as much info for song-by-song, unfortunately) and will look up any weird instruments I'm not familiar with, for instance on At My Window Sad and Lonely I noticed Billy plays a "bouzouki" and off the top of my head I wouldn't have been able to tell you what that is. But in that situation I caught that before we recorded and was able to quickly do some research. Clearly for Art of Almost I didn't do that, which is too bad because explaining what a cimbalom is, is exactly the kind of in depth, slightly nerdy stuff I want to share. So I probably should have just done my due diligence instead of guessing! Seems like I was caught off guard with that one. I want the show to find a good balance between being informative and feeling like a fun conversation between friends. So I don't want it to feel too structured or rehearsed, but there's probably a good balance we can find. I do try to research each song before hand but I also like going into these not knowing exactly where the conversation will flow or what Jason thinks and feels about individual songs.

But thanks for the clarification, I think doing a "corrections" segment every once in awhile will be fun, so I'll mention it there (unfortunately we're trying to record ahead so we have a large bank of episodes before Jason's child is born this winter, so it won't be able to set the record straight till we're into the Cs). Fair point about the percussion instruments too, I tend to think when there's a blanketed "percussion" credit that it's just shakers/tambourines but you're right in that isn't fair for all percussion instruments.

The other piece of feedback we've gotten is we don't always delve too deeply into what a song means. Sometimes, that's fine, like for Christ For President, it's right there in the title. Other times, like At Least That's What You Said, there was probably opportunity to talk about the lyrics a little more in-depth. Though I also don't want to get too into the weeds of dissecting each lyric Jeff writes, again, there's a balance in there somewhere to find. I tend to think much more about the songs sonically or the story behind the songs, lyrics can become an after thought for me at times, so I'm working on that.

Another change you'll notice after these initial batch of episodes is we lock down the format for the show a little more which I think has a big payoff for just keeping things organized and focused.

Again, thanks for listening and caring enough to offer your thoughts!

  9. Don't forget about import charges, you may be almost doubling the price! I guess you want the coloured vinyl, but the vinyl box set is $106 on amazon.ca (free shipping) and the CD set an incredbly reasonable $37. I pre-ordered both, may cancel the vinyl later though.

I haven't actually been hit with import charges on anything I've bought from the states in AGES, since at least 2018. It's weird, every once in awhile I'll have a period where every record I get will have charges for a few months, then nothing. So I just cross my fingers and hope the mail gods will be good to me!

  10. Interesting that I'll Sing It started as a Summerteeth song, did we know that??

Wow, so the vinyl and CD have different live shows?  That is...annoying to say the least.

If I was a betting man, I would say that the show from the CD set will get released next year like Live At The Troubadour did which was on the CD version of Being There.

  11. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

    Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

Bill & Ted Face The Music

Previous to this weekend I had only seen bits and pieces of the first two. I know these movies were popular when they came out but I don't think my generation really caught on with them like we have with Back to the Future, Wayne's World, Ferris Bueller, and other movies from that era. Both the first two films have homophobic slurs which obviously, were bad at the time and haven't aged well at all, but also feel needlessly mean and harsh for two films that are otherwise very positive.

Excellent Adventure kind of felt like the Gen-X equivalent of Scott Pilgrim. It was really fun, the characters were charming, I had a few good laughs. Overall it was a great time, if a little... surface level.

Bogus Journey though... might be the most creative movie I've ever seen! I friggin loved it. The whole movie was surreal and absurd. It's like no one once said "hey is this too much??". Everything with Death was just, great. They beat him at boardgames, take him to heaven, mug people for their clothes, and then meet Station. It's insane! Seriously look how great this character design is:

And the good robots might be the best looking robots I've ever seen in any television or movie:

It feels like Excellent Adventure spends a lot of it's time laughing at Bill and Ted but Bogus Journey just embraces the stupidity and becomes something completely unique because of it. I feel like Excellent Adventure was the one I heard the most about which is a pity because Bogus Journey is a god damn classic.

Face The Music was a lot of fun and is probably as good as a sequel to a comedy 30 years later can be. The daughters were great and stole the show. Everything about their fallout with Death was just perfect. It didn't equal the highs of Bogus Journey for me (really, can any film?). It felt like a combination of Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey but it also didn't feel like it tried to do anything new. Outside of Twin Peaks I can't think of a decades later continuation that did something new and felt satisfying, so that's probably for the best.

  12. This kind of reminds me of the Ryan Adams situation. The guy was always clearly a jerk and it's not much of a shock to learn he's a god damn creep/abuser/etc. I'll be happy if this is the last we hear of him.

  13. Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know about a new Wilco podcast, called "Alpha Bravo Charlie: The Alphabetical Wilco" featuring me and my friend Jason, which officially launched today. The goal of the show is to do an episode on every Wilco song, in alphabetical order, A-Z. We wanted to feel like you're hanging out with your friends, listening to a song, and then talking about it with them, so we try to keep things light with hopefully a reasonable amount of non-obnoxious banter! Depending on the song, episodes should be between 10 to 30 minutes, with new episodes twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. The A-Z format is definitely not unique to us, but as far as I'm aware, we're the first podcast to do this format on Wilco and maybe the first podcast to dive this deep into Wilco's vast catalog.

Due to a technicality in how one would organize songs that begin with a parenthesis, we're starting with "(Was I) In Your Dreams" but we'll soon move into songs classics like "A Magazine Called Sunset" and "A Shot In The Arm", and deep cuts like "Aint'a Gonna Grieve", move through the Bs, Cs, Ds, and eventually ending with "You Satellite" ...unless Wilco drops a new song in the next year that starts with Z! Wilco has a vast catalog, with lots of unreleased songs, collaborations, b-sides, etc, we had to draw a line somewhere so complete information on what songs we picked can be found here

Please check it out at www.abcwilco.com, and you can also find us on Spotify and anywhere you listen to podcasts, so feel free to subscribe! If you're reading this today we have an introductory episode up, as well as the first proper episode with episode 2 arriving on Wednesday. On the website there's lots of way to interact with us, so if your favourite Wilco song is "Cars Can't Escape" there's still time to drop us an e-mail or voicemail and explain why you love that song!

  14. The Golden Age was great! One of my favourite Beck songs. Sammy's voice was well suited and sounded great in the reverb.

It kinds interesting that the are listing it as the Jeff Tweedy Band.

Yeah I thought that was interesting too. I wonder if having concerts from "Jeff Tweedy" and "TWEEDY" was confusing more casual listeners. The Jeff Tweedy Band is more to the point.
