  1. I don't think I've seen a poll. I also don't know how useful a poll would be, every Wilco song is someone's favourite song which I think speaks to the band's consistency. I'd recommend just listening to Star Wars, I think it's their most inspired "modern" album but all the records are good. Schmilco is kind of a vaguely country acoustic rock album. Ode to Joy is a little more damaged sounding, very acoustic and warm. Wilco The Album and The Whole Love feel like greatest hits records to me, in the terms that they cover a lot of different sides of Wilco, I feel Whole Love is the stronger of the two. Star Wars is a big, crunchy, rock album and it's a lot of fun.

  2. Definitely fair point about the opening credits setting the mood and giving information about how Clarice is viewed/treated by the rest of the FBI. That elevator shot says a lot.

I'm watching Hannibal, the NBC show, right now and while sometimes it feels like a police procedural, it is very good. Mads is also a great Hannibal.

I've never been a member of the grammar police, but this "may or may not" idiom is worthless.  Literally everything and anything (that does not defy the laws of physics) "may or may not" happen on the show Monday.  Jeff may or may not announce that he's leaving Wilco and joining the Bottle Rockets.  Spencer may or may not announce that he's going to be the new drummer for the Waco Brothers, President Obama may or may not be a special guest on Monday.  It's the same as saying "anything's possible."  Grrr.  Ok, now I may or may not feel better.  :D

So what we just learned is that Chez may or may not be a member of the grammar police.

  4. Good on Brian for keeping it going for so long and knowing when it call it quits. I would imagine for bands of that level touring isn't glamorous. In your 20s it's probably fun but in your 60s, yeah I'd want to stay home too.

And there is now a TV show called Clarice and before that Hannibal.

    There is also Manhunter (1986).

Yeah I read that Clarice isn't very good, though it's early in its run. Supposedly Hannibal is great so I think that might be the next show we watch. Is 86 Manhunter any good?? They essentially remade it with Hopkins in the early 00s right?

I remember my family having a VHS tape of this when I was growing up. The cover always made me uncomfortable so it remained one of the few movies from our collection that I never watched. Tonight though, after 30 minutes of browsing for a movie to watch, I stumbled upon The Silence of the Lambs on Netflix. The wife had seen it before but all I knew about it was that there was a scene where a character told another character to put the lotion in a basket and that Anthony Hopkins was supposedly good in this. That doesn't begin to cover it. This guy gives a very convincing performance as a total creeper.

Jonathan Demme, who I always thought of as a documentarian due to his movies with Neil Young did an utterly fantastic job. Yeah there's some early-90s clunkiness like the first 5 minutes of the movie just being credits. Aren't you glad that's not a thing anymore? But he shot a lot of the movie with extreme closeups of the actors faces looking almost directly into the camera lens. That's a goddamn BOLD move but it pays off wonderfully here, it just gives the movie an incredibly unsettling feeling when Hannibal Lecter is staring directly at you. Chills. While the credits were a little self indulgent the font it used was very reminiscent of Twin Peaks, which came out a year before this movie did. In fact the whole movie had a bit of a Twin Peaks vibe. Maybe not campy like Twin Peaks can be, but similar in the eerie and uncomfortable elements of Twin Peaks. I don't know how intentional that was or if it just was because it was two works of fiction from the same time period touching on similar subject matter.

My main criticism would be at the transphobia in the movie. Though even that is not as bad as other movies from the 90s (go back and watch Ace Ventura!) it's still there and I wonder how much harm this movie unintentionally caused the trans community in the decades since it came out.

So while some of the subject matter doesn't hold up in our modern times, the directing and the acting definitely do. I give it 4/5 thumbs up. :thumbup:thumbup:thumbup:thumbup

  7. I hear ya. I probably don't spend as much time listening to music but a lot of that could be from not having a commute to work anymore. When I do listen to music, I think my habits have changed,  at least a bit, it's less about hearing great new albums and more about those old comforting albums that I know and love. I suspect that's probably from the uncertainty in the world. 🤷‍♂️

  9. You know, I was just thinking about how on this day last year I was in Minnesota watching Sam Beam and Calexico share the stage and today I'm eating left over pizza for the 45th Sunday in a row 😅
We're also watching Superstore on Netflix. If you want something easy to watch that's along the lines of other NBC workplace sitcoms like Parks and Rec, I recommend it. Sometimes in COVID easy to watch is all I can handle 🤷‍♂️

As a solid Gen Xer - I thought the place was cool. Then, again I went because they had a Grateful Dead exhibit going on - so my mindset may be more boomer-ish.

Oh yeah, should have clarified, I meant more about R&RHOF as a status that bands aspire (or don't aspire) to join, with the induction ceremony that turns into a television special, not so much the museum aspect of it. I haven't been myself but I have been to similar things like the Experience Music Project in Seattle and thought it was great. As someone with only a minor interest in Grateful Dead compared to some around here (American Beauty is a pretty good record!), even I'd go check that out, if I was ever in Cleveland.

  11. Truthfully..... that's a whole lot of artists I don't really care about. I imagine Iron Maiden is a lock. Probably the Foos too? Did Pearl Jam and RHCP make it in their first year? If yes then Foos are a lock. They're probably a lock just from how appealing both their music and Dave Grohl is.

    Please excuse this rant:
These next 10 years will be interesting for the R&RHOF. How many new artists do they induct a year?? 5 or 6? They might want to think about lowering that in the years ahead. 25 years ago is getting into the mid-90s, after the early 00s there wasn't a lot of new rock bands that also had mainstream success. Who do you induct after The White Stripes and The Strokes? I'm sure there's only so many notable artists from the 60s/70s/80s, like Devo, that were missed. Though, I'd argue the post 00s garage rival is when rock music got interesting again but I can't see a bands like Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver getting inducted in 8 or 9 years, as cool as a nerd like me would find it. But what new artists become available to induct in 2030?? That's only 9 years from now. We've all been posting on this message board longer than that!! The Decemberists? Yes please! But if I think that, it's probably not a good pick... Mumfords and Sons? The Avett Brothers? TAYLOR SWIFT?! That's a serious downgrade from Pearl Jam and Nirvana. I guess that's why they're bringing in more rap artists. Will we eventually have years where it's mostly rap music making it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? When do we have our first year of inductees that don't have a single guitar based act among them?

Though, on the flip side, I also wonder, as baby boomers age out, how much interest there will be for something like the R&RHOF? Outside of sports, these sorts of establishments don't strike me as something gen xers and especially millennials care about.

Maybe I'm wrong!  ...I am every once in awhile, after all.

Yikes. I hope the pace of vaccine distribution picks up, and you don't have to wait that long!

Oh more so because I'm cursed with this damn youthfulness!! They'll be strict about going by age here I think the current estimates are for late summer for me. The good news is my sister, who's a nurse at a senior's home is getting her second dose this weekend and my parents (64/71) should be in the spring.
Anyways, I'm happy for everyone getting their shots! Jealous but mostly happy.

  13. The Tweedys have been very generous doing the show throughout the pandemic. If they decided to stop doing it tomorrow, that would be sad but totally understandable, no one expected them to still be doing this in February. I know a lot of people have been very vocal about how much the show has meant to them during the pandemic but I hope that doesn't make Jeff and Susie feel like people are depending on them. So if going down to two nights a week is what keeps them invested in doing it for awhile longer, I think that's great. Truthfully, I was never crazy about the Friday night shows, usually we like to watch a movie or whatever new series is out but that's hard to do when you have to stop for an hour at 9pm to watch a livestream. I've never minded but I could sense my wife who is not as big of a Wilco fan, wasn't always excited about that! :rolleyes

  14. Any time we get New Madrid, it's special.

My iPhone for my notes didn't charge at all. I hope that it's something with an outlet and not the phone. I wrote down the songs on some paper and I'll try to add notes later this evening.

Check the connection area inside the iPhone for lint and dust!
