NoDep, Sure, I haven't really enjoyed the last two albums as much as some of the others, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way. To say "I don't get Jeff" because I prefer their earlier work is unfair. They are one of my favorite bands and I've been listening to the record all week and wanted to discuss it. Either way, I apologize if I offended or annoyed you and others by what you perceive as contrarian comments. I hope you enjoy the new album.

Jeff, Another good point to take into consideration. And by Jeff, I meant to say Flick.
-
CrowDaddy, I guess I mean more "tension" rather than "tense rivalry". Rivalry implies more of a negative kind of tension. And Wendy, You're right. Jay's solo career has been underwhelming to say the least. I guess I'd call it a mutually beneficial relationship. And one that I miss.
-
Rooney, I like Nels but he doesn't hold a candle to what Jay brought to the table. And yes, just my opinion and I don't expect all to agree. In terms of technical mastery he is up there, but I think he limits Jeff and doesn't challenge him enough.

@IMissTheInnocence, What difference does it make if I bought the Inspiration Corporation a new wing or my little sister burnt me a bootlegged copy? The music would sound just as bland.
-
Someone just compared Nels' wankery on SBS to Bitches Brew. Now I've heard it all. One thing I do like, however, is the pedal solo on "Solitaire". More of that please.
-
Some of you guys here are really drinking the kool aid and seem very insecure. @IMissTheInnocence, So if a Wilco fan who owns every record, UT/LF record, and other side projects doesn't like the new record that person should "stop complaining" and "shut up"? What are you working for Wilco Inc?
-
"Tense rivalry within the band" is often what drives great artists to challenge themselves.
-
Oh yeah... he's suing the band. This record is okay, but more or less another sleeper.
-
Yeah, they're good live (as stated before), but this thread was started to discuss their recent releases. Jeff's boring "dad" adult contemporary lyrics + Nels masturbatory noodling + STRONG limitations on Glen (maybe the best musician in the band) = a dull record.
-
Jeff's body of work is phenomenal, but "no one can touch him"? I maybe felt that way five years ago. I think you need to go out and update your record collection. And to say that Wilco is "all about Jeff's lyrics" really sells the band (and previous members) short. I'm certain he would disagree with you as well.
-
Someone stating their honest opinion about one of their favorite bands is scary? What's scary to me is how stale and bland their sound has gotten. Again, many of you guys don't agree (or are in denail), but they were a much better band when Jeff had someone to challenge not just his songwriting, but the sound of the band. It's a fun and nostalgic listen, but AM is full of clunkers. Jay helped make Wilco a great band. I think some of you guys need to go back and listen to Being There, Summerteeth, and YHF again.
-
That's what I'm getting at. At least "One Wing" sounds pretty good.
-
It hurts me to say this, but Jeff has really lost his edge. No Jay(s)/Leroy/Ken = No one to keep Jeff honest. While their live set is tight and always fun, anyone else sensing this band songwriting prowess is going downhill (while their notiriety and acclaim has increased) ? Just one man's opinion and I don't expect people to agree with me.

jeff to play chicago public school funding rally
NewMadridMO replied to thisyearsgirl's topic in Just A Fan
I'm a CPS teacher who attended the rally and it was quite the surprise to see Jeff come out. He played a version of "Jesus, Etc." accompanied by some guest vocals, bongos, and guitars. His message was "take care of each other" and he was gone. Very cool thing for Jeff to do. -
Yeah. Nels' shadow on the red curtain was really, really cool.
-
Probably my sixth or seventh show over the last several years and one of the best. I have to say, what was up with Jeff moaning about the fans clapping during Spiders? That version of Spiders was really memorable with the cool guitar harmonics Jeff was doing and then he had to go on ruin the moment. Awesome show!
-
Just checked Ticketmaster and it looks like this show (11,000 capacity) is already sold out.
-
Going with tickets on the lawn. "ELT" please!
-
Juding by how crowded the Decemberists show was, I certainly hope they limit the amount of lawn seats they sell. It's a big venue and that was a free show, but Wilco at Millenium Park? It's gonna be CROWDED.
-
Got 2 Lawn seats since the RSVD seats are sold out/unavailable. Will have to get there very early to camp out I guess.
-
Confirmed. Only one date so far but we'll see how fast it sells out.
-
Wish I had more details to share, but I don't. It sure would be a mob scene, but the sound would sure as heck be nice.

Sky Blue Sky is the album that: { fill in the blank }
NewMadridMO replied to W(TF)'s topic in Just A Fan
...really makes me miss Jay Bennett. -
Heard through the grapevine that Wilco may be playing 2 shows at Millenium Park this fall. Anyone else? It'd be quite the event. I know I'm looking forward to seeing The Decemberists play Millenium Park in a couple weeks with the Grant Park Orchestra.
