Five Wilco songs you can't stand to listen to.......
Golden Smoghead replied to Sparky speaks's topic in Just A Fan
Come on dcarter. Nobody likes the first part of Spiders/kidsmoke. I think Jeff Tweedy's mom doesn't even have anything nice to say about that forever intro. That said, I can appreciate your sentiment. You keep it cool down there in Tampa F-L-A. -
Did someone say holy trinity?

Thanks for dropping this knowledge on me. I'm not crazy enough about either Bill Maher or Bob Dylan to have heard of either movie before this thread ("Religulous" and "Masked and Anonymous"). I think I want to check them both out, now.
-
I kind of thought this was a slightly-different topic from the other threads, because it was more about the Maher movie and the appearance of Theologians in the movie. That said, I quit reading the other one about 30 pages ago, so maybe it's about the Maher movie now.

On the question of "what if Jesus were alive today?" I have always loved the Guthrie song on this topic. Lyrics for "Jesus Christ": Jesus Christ was a man who traveled through the land A hard-working man and brave He said to the rich, "Give your money to the poor," But they laid Jesus Christ in His grave Jesus was a man, a carpenter by hand His followers true and brave One dirty little coward called Judas Iscariot Has laid Jesus Christ in His Grave He went to the preacher, He went to the sheriff He told them all the same "Sell all of your jewelry and give it to the poor," And they

Oh I thought this thread was an homage to that Ataris song, "Boys of Summer." You know, the one that goes, "...saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac..." ... In other words, it's always really annoyed me they change that lyric for their crappy cover... That's right, I defend Don Henley song lyrics on the Interwebz. It's my body, I do what I want.

HAHAHA I have been avoiding this thread b/c I hate Zak Wylde, good times. That thing looks like a real turd sandwich, though probably sounds good. -
10 Best Albums Resulting From the Uncle Tupelo Break-Up

All of my posts contain very small hyperlinks to my fearful blogs about the Large Henneman Collider. Pretty good list, particularly the Gourds link -- I always feel like his banjo etc lines on AM go underappreciated. -

Yes we can? Hey I hope Jeff's right just as much as the next guy, but I thought he was going to start making out with Barack's picture by the end. ^see, I can spell 'Barack' and everything

This actually made me want to barf. I'm fine with musicians pitching their fave politicians, but that tripe about how Barack Obama can make this into the nation we used to aspire to just gags me. THEY'RE ALL JUST POLITICIANS, PEOPLE! I met President Bush in 2002, and he was extremely charismatic in person -- but that's basically a prerequisite to being a major political figure. I support Obama over McCain, but Jesus folks he's just another politician. He's not the dang Messiah, and four or five years from now the same people fired up for him will all have "Impeach Obama" bumper stickers.

Jeff Tweedy Signature Model Guitar from Breedlove
Golden Smoghead replied to Mick S's topic in Just A Fan
That's awesome. I love it when good people support good people. -
I have to admit, I really didn't anticipate the thread heading in this direction... That said, I love the Bucky Baxter stuff w/ Dylan, also a huge fan of his PSG with Steve Earle and on Demolition (RA).

I love the way Jay Bennett played the pedal steel licks at this show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBhaq4fuwS0 I really wish Wilco still had more of that steel sound in stuff, like Bob Egan's pedal steel on Far, Far Away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBhaq4fuwS0 I know Nels plays that lap steel sometimes, but I find his style to be more that rock / blues style, not the old country style volume-swell-a-riffic steel.

Help Write Questions for Dan Murphy (Golden Smog)
Golden Smoghead replied to owl's topic in Just A Fan
Do you ever feel like you're in a Jayhawks tribute band? If every single ex-Jayhawk eventually joins Golden Smog, will you have to start a rival version of Smog that includes every member of Soul Asylum? Which of your guitars is your favorite? Whose unreleased documentary would have been more epic, Golden Smog's or Wilco's? When you write songs is it music first or lyrics first, generally? I knew it was music first, you are my soulmate... How many songs about stalker fans is too many? -
I probably would have gotten an 8-string but there is an $80 model of console lap that is 6-strings, the cheapest 8-string I saw was in the $250 range. I can see how the extra strings would be overwhelming, esp adding in the pedals and levers. Anyway here is what it sounds like... Definitely easing into it but I dig the sound. Kinda hissy b/c I couldn't figure out where the interference to my amp was coming from, tonight: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cf...;songID=6849639 You have to click "play hi-fi" That slide guitar on there is uber simplistic b/c I had actually neve

Yep. San Jose show, in case that helps anything. I'm a lot older and have lower expectations these days, I'm sure I'd get more out of it now... But if you've only ever heard Dylan on recordings / TV specials, it can be a real shock.

Never say never, I just had one go to crap on me after only 6 or 7 months, I was pretty pissed / bummed. One of the connector ends got loose and started doing that awesome, loud hum in the middle of songs.

I walked out of a Dylan concert in '98 or so, when he was touring with Paul Simon. PS opened that night and was fantastic, but we'd come for Dylan... But the guy was so drunk (or indifferent, or whatever) that you couldn't even tell what song was being played. Walked out after I realized we were three verses into "Tangled up in Blue." Took me a couple years to get back into Dylan, honestly... Though his set had started pretty cool, his vocals on "Sound of Silence" were amazing, like a revelation really. A shame his own songs were so pukey and unbearable.

Why you got to break my heart, junebug?? I actually just got the lap steel today, I bought a supercheap one for $80. It sounds a zillion times better than I expected, actually. I played one of my guitars in an open dobro-type tuning for a long time, and didn't like the sound half as much as the C6 I put this lap in. I think I like how the two- and three-note chord frags sound through the amp / with more sustain. I didn't try lap for a long time because I didn't really get into that dobro... I think this will be good enough for what I'm doing at the moment. Personally I'm a big fan of

Haha, exactly my reaction!

I think I may do exactly this, thanks for the advice!

Interesting coincidence: just last night I asked Bucky Baxter to be my friend on myspace... I read in an interview that Bucky is the guy who taught Dylan to play pedal steel in the mid-90s. I actually only found that part out last night though, I am mainly a fan of his b/c of his work with the Dukes (Steve Earle's backing band in the 80s). And thanks for the wishes of luck, owl! BTW really dig your website. ... Back to my pedal steel dreamz, I have found this steel guitar forum a really great place to start when looking into a lot of this stuff. Just all the darn pictures of beauti

OK so like all musicians I have a hard time not lusting over equipment I don't have / sounds I can't make with my current gear. But it's been about six months now, and I'm still Jonesing for a pedal steel. This is based purely on the fact that I love, love how pro pedal steel licks sound on my favorite songs. However, I don't know crap about playing one (have played slide guitar -- but who hasn't). I have messed with some dobro / lap steel and it is just not the same, frankly. Couple questions for the SST crowd... 1. anybody play one? do you have any advice for a novice? I mean

you think your shit don't stink haha. the idea he might listen to that song to get fired up is hilarious to me for some reason.
