  1. I love these lines, though I'll admit it's partly because I love the different musical tack, on this track: So dont pin your hopes Or pin your dreams To misanthropes or guys like me The truth is overrated I suppose
  2. I think Nels makes a lot of sense for what Wilco currently is... Kinda acid-jazz-jam-folk or something. Now whether THAT is a good thing...
  3. True. But the VW commercial with "Pink Moon" launched a surge in interest in Nick Drake whenever that was (I think late-90s); he was similarly uncredited. I'm sure there have been some SBS sales that came out of the commercials -- "the Thanks I Get" really jumps out at you, I think I would've googled the hook if I didn't already own the album. I was trying to make the point that p'shawing the Shins because they did get a good setup from that movie is unfair... The Shins sell albums because people like their music, not because they got on a soundtrack for a mediocre movie.
  4. I'm not sure why being derivative became such a complete slam on musicians. Bob Dylan started off wanting to basically do Guthrie covers, correct?? Weren't the Rolling Stones just a crappy blues coverband? Weren't the Beatles just trying to ride the Rock n' Roll wave and bang chicks out of their league rather than go to work at the factory? I think most of the great musicians borrowed heavily from their antecedents, and yet were somehow able to be liberated by, and liberate, that tradition. I just don't get why the ideal musician is an autistic lesbian trucker who hasn't heard any music
  5. Absolutely agree, and agree that it trounces 2006. And sorry if these aren't indie enough, but these are all GREAT albums: Ryan Adams, Easy Tiger Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank The National, Baxter Steve Earle, Washington Square Serenade Bruce Springsteen, Live From Dublin The Killers, Sam's Town and the one that I've been most happily surprised by: Kanye West, Graduation I don't think being commercially viable is a crime. The Boss's Live From Dublin is more in line with Guthrie's body of work than anything else to sell over 5k albums in ages. I'm sorry if doom
  6. You'd think SBS would get a similar benefit from the V-dub commercials, though. Certainly more people have heard those commercials than listened to the GS soundtrack.
  7. Yes. Honestly it'd be cool to hear Tweedy do an album with input / singing from someone distinctive who is an artist on their own. Or if someone like that were to do some significant collaboration on a Wilco album. What I am thinking is like the Steve Earle song "You're Still Standing There" where Lucinda Williams sings one verse solo, and they both sing the choruses. It's almost weird how little Wilco has had other musicians on their albums, but I'm sure you folks will straighten me out with some crazy track from Being There with a guitar part played by Elvis Costello or something.
  8. THIN-SKINNED know-nothing rubes! I don't have any hate in my heart. I can admit I'm more stoked for September 25th more for Halo 3 than Steve Earle, no pride here. Just recently really pleased to run into Townes' stuff, looking for more ideas. Will check out those mentioned, thanks!
  9. I was reading an old Steve Earle interview the other day and ran across this line: "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." I laughed aloud, but anyway I ran a search on VC here and didn't get any results for Townes anywhere. Just pointing out that Townes was one of those fantastic songwriters that were forerunners to the great Americana music being made today. AND, you probably know at least one of his songs -- he wrote "Pancho and Lefty" which was later popularized by Willie and Merle's co
  10. Ryan Adams. But that's only because you're not into Steve Earle enough.
  11. That's a good call. Of course, it's pretty easy to say that of a lot of YHF songs since there really were so many overdubs. Heavy metal drummer is one that I find pretty "flat" live, generally speaking.
  12. Dude. Right there with ya, my first thought! I like the bittersweet / angry / "I hate you because I can't have you so fuck you" vibe.
  13. Still trying -- and failing -- to get into SBS. If it weren't for Jeff's vocal style, you couldn't tell this is the same band from A.M. at all.
  14. I think this sounds like a pretty logical next step to me. People criticize Wilco for their sound evolving over time. I just kinda feel like: this is good but definitely would be out of place in older MM albums. But is that such a bad thing? Do you really want them to sound the same forever? I mean, this isn't a Bon Jovi fan site.
  15. I, too, am just repeating myself from the other thread and saying: John Prine Bruce Springsteen -- yes people get it, but he's so good sometimes I want to kill myself / never touch a guitar again Alex Chilton -- of Big Star, way ahead of his time Steve Earle's early stuff -- Guitar Town is such perfect straight-ahead "guy in his 20s / 30s" Americana angst Mark Oliver Everett aka E of the Eels -- sure he's too jokey sometimes, but some great songs in there Mary Chapin Carpenter -- also she's smart enough to play Lucinda Williams tunes
  16. I really think his abuse of the f-word is pretty amusing. I dig Jesus H. Christmas.
  17. Thanks tons!! This will definitely be a key part of my therapy to get over the ticket fiasco.
  18. I'm seriously bummed about how the tickets thing went down with this show.
  19. I thought this is kinda weird... Anyone know if who the domain name used to be registered to? Because here's the current whois listing (actually from the estdomains listing on their whois url, http://whois.estdomains.com): Registration Service Provided By: ESTDOMAINS INC Contact: +1.3027224217 Website: http://www.estdomains.com Domain Name: jayfarrar.net Expiry Date: 11-Mar-2008 Days Left for Expiry: 510 Record Creation Date: 11-Mar-2001 Domain Status: Active Domain servers in listed order: ns1.eltahost.com ns2.eltahost.com RegistrantContact Details Name lasan Company las
  20. That's great news! I was so stoked when I heard about the show -- so bummed when I got frozen out of the presale. Groove!!
  21. Thanks for pointing this out! Not a huge fan of ye olde 9:30 club but hell yeah this should be fun.
