Alt. Country Scholarly Articles/Books?

I really dig New Madrid. I never understood the fountain reference though until I saw it here: -
I think that is very cool. But then, I also like Enrique Iglesias' song "Escape." YOU SHOULD KNOW, IT'S HARD TO JUST FORGET THE PAST.

After much phase shifting, setting the potentiometer every possible way, and heavily editing all of the settings... I basically think you are exactly right. I think the pickup isn't installed properly. If I play loud enough, yes it can pick up the sound. But then the note dies away much quicker through the pickup than in real life (with everything turned very sensitive). Also the tone kinda crackles at places, makes weird dips... I am just thinking you're exactly right and it's not installed correctly. Le sigh, that store is pretty far from where I live, and boo hiss for having my main -
I think SBS is an album of recordings that are pretty, without being attractive. I see SBS as Gwenyth Paltrow. You can see how other people like it, and appreciate it aesthetically, and even WANT to like it yourself -- but ultimately you're going to leave it for Jennifer Lopez because it's too boring.

Not everybody has to like all the music everybody else likes. I have a hard time with AF too, and I can understand the anti-hipsterness happening these days. It's kind of an undertandable reaction, though I say give everyone the benefit of the doubt... I think that's kind of the point in that interview, anybody cool enough to want to associate with my group is OK even if we don't all have the same taste in clothing, lifestyle, music. And if you have a problem with that openness and stuff, then you don't have to come around. I have been listening to nothing but Steve Earle, Smithsonian Fo

Amen to that! I think it's better than "Magic." Don't get me wrong, I think the E Street stuff is some of the best music made in the last 50 years, but I am just so in love with the Americana vein in Bruce's music.

I thought that was the worst show ever. I actually have only been listening to Whiskeytown since, I thought that show was so bad.

Thanks rowboat. Just to let you know what's going on, I found a switch labeled "phase" and turned it to the other setting and that seems to have helped a lot. I think it would've been helpful if they gave a handbook for that thing, but I can't find one even online. Edit: actually here is a handbook: http://www.americanmusical.com/ItemFiles/M...nauramanual.pdf -
Theologians... I think that version from Sunken Treasure is pretty sweet.

Anybody have any experience with these suckers? I bought it mostly because it has a really bright sound, and is also very light and comfortable in terms of wear (I'm a stand-up player). I have some carpal tunnel in my left wrist, so I was consciously trading-off some of that loud bluegrassy sound I like, in exchange for the easier action. So basically, trying to trade ballsy-for-bright and hoping it works out OK. Which is just to explain, part of my problem is a pretty dramatic shift in sound. At the guitar shop, I didn't bother plugging it in, because I have always played with shitt

Charleston Rescheduled???: The Merged Superthread!

How DARE you say that in this thread. Sorry Charleston folks, this really does suck. I'd be mad as hell. -
A little piece of Uncle Tupelo nostalgia

I graduated from Wentzville High School. Wave them a middle finger for me next time you drive by, ok? Worst story from that general stretch of I-70 has to be the Chuck-Berry hidden-cameras fiasco. My wife grew up going to his restaurant all the time and is therefore still extremely skeezed out by anything related to CB. -
I have Comcast and it's my impression that they're not necessarily targeting bt. (I BT but only occasionally and it works fine for me.) I think it's more like, they handicap you if you are eating up a lot of bandwidth. For the guy who asked, you can pay them more $$ for them to "uncap" your access. It won't NECESSARILY make your connections much faster... I think a more common limiter is your distance to the nearest hub, frankly. Howeverm while they don't really explain these kind of things, it seems to me like you are paying for them to not "choke" your connection if you're using a lot

I just discovered these guys...
Golden Smoghead replied to Sweet Papa Crimbo's topic in Someone Else's Song
Saw them awhile ago (I want to say late 06??) in DC, never had heard of them before the friend who brought me out gave me EATT. Their set was kinda goofy and had a lot technical problems, but they came across as supercharming and the lead singer was very solid vocally. I think they didn't have their normal second guitar for that show though, I think the guy playing was a local stand-in for some reason. Also I think the Shins comparison is a good one, at least on the level of "I don't really care what this dude is saying, these spacey guitars are hella cool." -
That would be pretty freaking cool!!

Wikipedia informed me that "Trouble in Mind" is 8-bar blues. I did not know that... Here's a version performed by Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Keith Richards: I actually prefer the much-faster, old-timey version from my Folkways "Old Timey Music" album but I can't find that atm, sorry.

AFTER WILCO LET'S OUT (Around the Riv)

I think he's affiliated with the venue vice the band (based on the sig). -
Second that notion about Gretsches. I'm still figuring mine out, and I've had it for about six months. Sometimes it is the prettiest guitar I've ever heard, other times it sounds like total shit. Just feels like there are a million subtleties to master. Not a bad thing necessarily though.
-
Wow, that was pretty cool.

Nice song Todd. Agree with the Lou Reed comment, I hear some Farrarness too. Joss I agree with the others about alt take 1. I think it's because of that keyboard or whatever carrying more of the rhythm, sounds good. Also something kinda Eels-y about that take to me.

That leads into a good question: speaking as someone who has been MEANING to pick up some Replacements for awhile now, should I wait on these reissues? Are these even the albums I should be most interested in? Asked another way: 1. where to start with the replacements? 2. do you think the reissues are likely to be of higher-enough quality that I should wait for them to come out?

I think he went to New York City 'cause he likes the way it sounds. CONGRATS STEVE EARLE!!
