  1. This whole album is great (I still applaud Honolulu, while not really enjoying it). Calling Cards has quickly become a favorite along with City Swan. I think of her solo albums I could say: The Harder I Fight.... Fox Confessor Middle Cyclone Canadian Amp The Tigers Have Spoken the boyfriends albums
  2. Ok, so what does the anecdote offer our discussion on the role of public education in the U.S.? It has been established that its perceived rhetoric can't be critiqued since it is merely 'anecdotal', so "just sayin'"....
  3. Worst job ever to skate by in, ever. There were people manning a cubicle in the lower ranks of the marketing company where my girlfriend used to work who made $20k a year more than I did who didn't care about their job and weren't particularly good at it. There are plenty of well paying white collar jobs where someone with a degree and interview skills can spend half their day on youtube, and half their day answering emails. Teaching you're on your feet the entire time, with a brief chance to answer emails with one hand while you lunch with another. Skating is not an option.
  4. I have been putting in ten hours most days (some days more), but this is the time of year where it's impossible to feel caught up. I'm not really sure what financial benefit would seem congruent for working incredibly hard- most people that stick to this job do it because they really want to. I guess a little better money would be good, but I think most teachers are feeling like the U.S. culture is lacking in respect for us.
  5. I got the deluxe LP in the mail yesterday, well worth the twenty-whatever dollars it cost. One lp with the album, a second with 3 bonus tracks on one side and a sweet snake picture on the other. Came with a cd that includes the bonus tracks, and all the art is really cool.
  6. My buddy had Shame, Shame on at his party the other night. After it was over I started hearing incredible Dr. Dog songs I'd never heard before. I peeked at his Ipod to see what this album was I'd never heard of, and it was the deluxe Shame, Shame bonus tracks. Those songs are so good!
  7. That's a really interesting contour for an acoustic. I would guess it has the bright/articulate sound happening more than the rich/thick sound happening, is that right?
  8. Alright, the gas company says it's ok. Settled.
  9. I just caught more fracking mud from America's favorite news source, Stephen Colbert. I found it interesting that not only had a number of families gotten sick, seen their plants die, their sink water become flammable, but apparently the industry has paid many families to be quiet about it. Including in my home state of Colorado. Everything I learn about natural gas makes me like it less.
  10. Yeah "frowned upon" seems like a weirdly soft judgement of a murder.
  11. I think "Nearly Midnight, Honolulu" doesn't really work for me. I'm really glad she did it. It was a bold-ass artistic statement and probably the biggest risk on the record. It just doesn't quite work for me. I love the line "Hey little girl, would you rather be the kings pet, or the king?" There are a lot of cool gender/power lines on this album.
  12. Ok.... one listen in, it's good. Maybe great. I like how she seems more emotionally vulnerable on this one. I like the more rocking elements, as well as the super stripped down acapella moments. I'm not sure about a couple of arrangements that sound like Middle Cyclone retreads, but that worry might go away after I get to know the songs better. I spent the album thinking about how amazing of a person she seems to be, and how she might be really hard to be in a relationship with. Maybe a little crush there....
  13. I've always thought the pervasiveness of this malapropism is thanks to the fact that it has some linguistic logic. By definition "intensive" means "to an intense degree", so an intensive purpose would be the concept in question being tested rigorously. Like "When push comes to shove," or "practically".
  14. I hated when Dylan went electric. Folk music used to have integrity and he sold it out man. Also lets focus on the real underminer: Jorgensen. He's always trying to steal the show sitting back there all focused with his bells and whistles.
  15. One thing that will change in spite of congressional gridlock is the public perception of the Affordable Care Act. The rubber really hits the road this fall. If it works the way it's supposed to it should save money, and cover more people. If that happens I think the conversation will change considerably.
  16. I'm not sure if anyone on here has been belittled.....
  17. Well maybe not. But people on this board seem to think Honey Boo-Boo is not a topic of conversation. My friends have no interest. The media I select doesn't indulge. I live in a joyfully Honey-Boo-Boo-free universe. It's not that we can control the crap-flow in popular media, but more that we can constructively cultivate an environment that is more rich with meaningful topics.
  18. I think the criticism about election hype 3 years before the election, isn't to suggest that politicians shouldn't be thinking about it. It's a desire to have the media offer more pertinent information in our time, and not to prolong the national football game with years of pregame coverage. I think some people are saying "Hey dude, don't talk about it. Just cause CNN is speculating doesn't mean we need to be sunk with Rand Paul, Chris Christie and Hillary Clinton gossip because right now it doesn't matter!". That's not a command for anyone on here. Free forum, free country. But maybe w
  19. Not only is the escalation and elongation of the campaign season obnoxious, it's also pointless. We've seen in the last couple cycles how often the favorites thrust in the limelight by the 24-hour news machine don't make it to the end. The real question on the economy is if the deficit reduction is matched by any relief for people who are down on their luck. In some macro sense a part of the reduction is a boosted GDP, but that doesn't necessarily mean regular people are doing better.
  20. I don't need tanks because I make it a point not to go places and shoot people.
  21. My mistake. Thank you for clarifying, that's an important point. If you read the article, in this case it is. It's a useless number for a once instrumental element of war that is steadily becoming obsolete. We're also sending them jets that our military says they don't need, and their military says they don't need either.
  22. And here's where I feel federal budget woes should be pinching the Pentagon first: http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2013/08/08/209878158/egypt-may-not-need-fighter-jets-but-u-s-keeps-sending-them-anyway I mean, I'm all for putting Americans to work, but if we're going to spend a billion, why give Egypt another 200 tanks to rust in their lot with over a 1,000. We could be building high-speed rail with that money. Criminey. Someone once said something about some kind of military industrial something-or-other complex:
  23. I've always said the best thing for a Belgian with a gun is a Samoan (if not a Uruguayan) with a gun. Saving lives man, saving lives.
