  1. When I first heard of this pairing my first thought was of a ticket stub an old pal showed me of a concert he went to. It was a '73 show with co-headliners Uriah Heep and Earth, Wind & Fire. No shit. That VH/K&G show does sound like fun.
  2. I wonder if there's ever been a feasibility study for the cost of a live archival release series. Who among us wouldn't pony up the extra cash for a nice, crispy HDCD SBD of some show we went to, or even some "legendary" show from the dim and distant past? My bet would be everything has been taped for a very long time, and in the band's possession. If it wasn't cost-effective then no bands would do it, and many do. Could be a very nice revenue stream for the band, and a wonderful thing for the fans as well. Anyway...that what I'd LIKE to see happen in the world of Wilco in 2013.
  3. Billy was definitely better by himself. And - I really need to go back and see that scene Fritz is talking about. Maybe it's Hank Harrison?
  4. For the first time since I first started going to shows (1976) I saw zero concerts this year. None. Any money I did have for that sort of thing was spent on GD music. Not that that would surprise anyone.
  5. Yeah, I didn't think so. I thought it came off well. Jimmy was REALLY working on that tune (and others). You could see him just digging in, trying to do those riffs - many of which were about a half dozen overdubs on the record. The setlist represented a nice overview of their career imo. I found it odd that ITTOD was not represented, which sort of reinforces my feelings that, if there is a "weak" Zep record, that one is it. And before I get nuked on here let me state that it's NOT a bad LP, it just isn't quite up to the impossibly high standards of the others.
  6. My kid got me the book for Xmas. Opened it up and the next thing you know it's 2 AM and I'm 300 pages into it. LIKE.
  7. Celebration Day - GET IT. It had no reason to be that good, but it was. I'll respectfully disagree with jff - I thought Jason drove the entire thing, very impressed with the way he handled the tempo changes. JPJ is as professional as ever - he seems to have not lost a step. Jimmy HAS lost a step, but he still played remarkably well. Robert...well..for much of the show he seemed like he was saving himself for something later - solo gigs later on down the road? I don't know. Every once in awhile you'd get a glimpse of the Golden God, sigh. I was so stoked to hear "For Your Life" live. Never
  8. That was a pretty convincing case for Chris you put up there. Even if it has no chance. I'd rather see Cornell be given a shot instead of Grohl though. That "Whole Lotta Love" he did with Carlos sounded pretty fine to me. My son informs me that Cornell can't 'hit it' like he used to, but WTF we're 'speculating' here anyway.
  9. On TMS Hagar alluded to his phone getting a ring. Now THAT would've been wonderful.
  10. The between-song banter idea...now wouldn't THAT be fun! Play that sucker at a GD trivia night and watch all of our brains explode. You and I have done this "banter quiz" a few times and I certainly enjoy it. Mostly because I'm such a geek for this kind of thing. The "are you a cop" rap is from 10/30/71 - one of my first tapes. It was actually labeled as that on the copy I dubbed. My favorite (possibly) of all song banter is 12/1/73 Boston. It features quite a bit of Phil and continues through a couple of tunes.
  11. That's the spirit, man! The Who is one of those bands that deserve to be handed down from generation to generation. At their best they're simply without peer when it comes to embodying the ideals of Rock.
  12. Much of it has to do with Roger's vocal style - almost "operatic" (God I hate to use THAT word). Jagger could probably sing in his style for another 50 years - not nearly as much of a strain to do his thing. There's a damn good reason while Plant nixed the Zep Reunion idea. He knows damn well that couldn't wail like he did 40 years ago. Apparently Roger doesn't feel the same about his music.
  13. I was on the phone with the old man last night (before I had had a chance to watch the DVR). Dad and my late Mother are/were HUGE Who fans. I took 'em to see the band in '82. I asked him about the 12/12/12 concert. He was mightily impressed with The Stones, Mick in particular, but disappointed by The Who - actually he was bummed about Roger's voice - "He's lost it, son. He can't sing the songs right anymore". Well, I watched last night, and I'm inclined to agree. Pete was fabulous imo but Roger couldn't hit the notes. I don't know if lowering the keys to the tunes is the right idea but it wa
  14. I was fortunate enough to see Ravi twice. The first was in Fall 1985 - he had tabla master Allah Rakah with him and it was absolutely one of the most (if not THE most) amazing musical experiences of my lifetime. Truly an epiphany for me. I felt as if I'd been dosed, even though I was (almost!) sober. The second was about 6-7 years ago, and although he'd lost a step (at 85!) it still was mind-blowing.
  15. As far as early 80s Dews go I've always been fond of the 7/31/82. In fact that whole second set is a smoker.
  16. The worst Dead show you ever saw > your best day ever at work. Just sayin'.
  17. Here's a few killer Dews off the top of my head: 5/8/77 (of course. it's REALLY powerful) 5/26/72 (europe '72) 5/2/70 (dick's picks #8) 6/18/74 (encore, beautiful) 4/28/71 (ladies & gentlemen) 5/22/77 (dick's #3) 9/11/73 9/18/87 (best of the post-coma Dews?) 10/18/74 (the GD movie) 9/10/74 (dick's #7) OK, there's MORE than a few LOL. Many are officially released. Happy Hunting!
  18. I've heard a few live versions of Achilles, and I have to say it's one of the rare tunes that is just better in the studio. Because of the overdubs I guess. It's just perfection.
  19. That might be part of its appeal for me. Cold, detached. The music itself is rather morose. You can almost hear the drugs humming through the music. But (as I've said before) it might be Jimmy's greatest work on the guitar(s). Achilles is the very definition of "epic". Nobody's Fault is wall-to-wall guitar blitzkrieg. Tea For One (to me) updates the "Since I've Been Loving You" vibe, but is even sadder. And the space between the notes on things like For Your Life and Royal Orleans just make those tunes swing like a motherfucker. Not a song on that LP that I don't love. Nice!
  20. Presence (along with LZ I) is still my favorite album of theirs.
  21. A conversation at work the other night: Me: So...GOD is gonna sit in tonight with The Stones Andy (co-worker): Nice. What do you think they'll play? Me: Well, it'll definitely be some kind of blues they're all familiar with. Probably Little Red Rooster, but I'm hoping for something like Champagne & Reefer. I love that tune. Thanks, guys!
  22. Yeah, he mentioned the Aerosmith audition too. But he did tell Trunk about the Stones thing. I thought it was odd. Beggars is my very favorite!
  23. When Micheal Schenker was on TMS last season he mentioned that he had a call about an audition for the job. Which he (wisely) passed on. WTF - the guy was like 18 years old then. Fantastic player, but that band would've ate him up.
