  1. This is a point I meant to make, too. He pitched quite well and put up impressive numbers in the steroids era, to boot.
  2. I don't think Mussina will have a problem getting into the HOF at all. Maybe not the first time around, but he'll get in pretty quickly. He pitched his whole career, and pitched above average for most of it, in the AL East, too. That's impressive in itself.
  3. I think he's only got 3-4 years of eligibility left, too.
  4. 1st base is more difficult than 2nd base? I've reserved comment on all of this until now but I think anybody in baseball would dispute this. 2nd base is a physically more demanding position, requires more speed and overall athleticism, better range, a better arm, and better hand-eye coordination. As b2 (or someone) stated earlier, it's a reason there's a premium on guys who can play the spot well. It's also why there are so many 1b-men available that can hold their own.
  5. That thing would fold within a month if it were based out of a shitty market like FLA, though....
  6. So we're going to get into semantics now, too? Intangibles are usually used in the context of a player/teams value that is not easily categorized through stats. In this regard, I find it odd that so many people are griping about the context of the MVP award, as it's an award based on value. Quentin's value decreased because he was hurt for the last month of the season. I'd call that an intangible, but whatever.
  7. The numbers he missed in not playing are intangible.
  8. He was the front-runner up until the end of August, sure. The injury killed it for him. An intangible, if you will.
  9. 1. Pedroia/Mauer almost dead-heat. 2. Youkilis 3. Several others before Mauer.
  10. Horseshit on all counts. Mauer is the only guy who came as close to meriting the award and he would have been a fine pick, as well.
  11. I like this. Frees up some roster room, $, and points to Masterson joining rotation....
  12. You should write a plea to the awards committe with your gripe. If it weren't for the intangibles no way Pedroia wins the award, right?
  13. I think you remain the only person to ever accuse Manny as being a "clubhouse cancer...."
  14. This is getting to the beating-a-dead-horse stage, I feel, but it isn't solely based on numbers. This isn't a Player of the Year award. There are criteria that the BBWA use to help them select their order of merited recipients. Some people here take objection to that as there are "intangibles" that the BBWA are asked to consider. That doesn't negate the criteria, though. I'd say Pedroia was the MVP for the Sox over Youks, too. There are a lot of numbers you can toss out to support an argument for either and based on those numbers you may be swayed. Pedroia had a monster defensive year and
  15. Mauer as the clear cut/run-away and rightful receiver of the award doesn't resonate with me, sorry.
  16. Listen, I'm just re-stating the merits for the award that Mr.Rain posted. Yeah, they are heavily based on intangibles. So, it is an issue. I also said it'd be a coin toss between Mauer and Pedroia if I was voting. Saying you "don't buy" the fact that Pedroia won it over Mauer doesn't hold water for me if intangibles are being voted on. I didn't say Pedroia scores better in the "intangibles" column, necessarily, but enough of the people who vote apparently did. And no, I don't think the BBWA got it wrong. Because he plays for the Red Sox he got it? Please. ed. And, Pedroia might be 5'9"
  17. But those intangibles are part of what helps the BBWA decide whom to vote for. That's the point.
  18. How do you not buy that he was more valuable to his team than Mauer was to his? How do you not buy that his character, disposition, loyalty, and effort outweighed Mauer's? How do you not buy the number of games he played? Really, it's pretty much a toss-up between Pedroia and Mauer imo, but the BBWA saw it more clearly than I did. It's certainly merited regardless.
  19. Pedroia AL MVP: http://mlb.mlb.com/index.jsp ROY and MVP. Nice job you little bastid.
  20. I gave up on Heroes 3/4 of the way through last year, yet I have the last few episodes from then, as well as all from this season, dvr'd. I still haven't watched them but can neither bring myself to erase them or to sit through them. I call it "Hero Purgatory."
