  1. I love the band, but this track sounds about as blah as most of their last studio release. Sad, because most of their catalog is great.
  2. I think there are a lot of people who agree with conservative fiscal policy but disagree with the Republican platform on many social issues which is designed to appease the Religious Right. There isn't a party who supports free trade, free markets, small government, business-friendly policies, and personal responsibility that also supports abortion rights, gay rights, environmental protection, etc. You can get one set of policies with Democrats and the other with Republicans, but there aren't any major parties that support both. Many who consider themselves moderates or independents would
  3. I appreciate that the show's writers are actually showing up for work. I'll still have something new to watch even when the other shows run out of scripts.
  4. Two Radiohead threads on the same board? You should have posted on the one started six months ago, pal.
  5. I'm not disputing that writers are essential. I'm just saying that if they are more easily replaceable, then all else equal they will be paid less.
  6. Studio heads have far more responsibility than a writer. Star actors are much harder to replace than a writer.
  7. Unless there is some sort of illegal collusion going on, then I'd have to assume that wages are low because there are far more people willing and able to do the job than there are available positions. Being an essential part of the show doesn't necessarily equate to great wages if you are easily replaced. I have no idea if the writers are getting screwed or not, but I do wish that my employer would pay me for two weeks even though I abandoned my job. That's not a bad deal.
  8. If it's that bad, then I don't see why anyone with talent would do it. Then again, that might explain a lot of the crap that's on tv.
  9. Let's say that the government gives Patient A and Patient B each $5000 to cover the same medical procedure. If Patient A wants to spend an additional $5000 of his own money to receive what he decides is better care, should the government prevent him from doing so? That's what your argument comes down to; you just framed it differently. The government should provide everyone with the same opportunities to succeed, but it shouldn't guarantee the same end result for everyone. Doing so removes important incentives, and if the incentives are lacking, shit won't work right. For the record, I
  10. It is about salvation, but I think Jeff wrote it for his wife. Notice how he says that he was "the last in line / for the one true vine," but the person who saved him then became his one true vine. He isn't talking about a universal savior like Christ, but an individual who turned his life around. It's definitely a biblical allusion, but I don't think it has anything to do with Christianity.
  11. I think the song was a bonus track on one of the eighteen different versions of the record, but I couldn't tell you which. I found it streaming here if you want to listen. Thanks for the responses.
  12. Has anyone tried playing these? I can see all of you reading the thread without replying.
  13. In case it helps anyone, here is as far as I've gotten in my attempt. I may be way off though. Capo 4 C G I was last in line C G For the one true vine C Am7 Am G The endless winding thread C G I was dead at first C G I had done my worst C Am7 Am G When you came to me Bm Life had ceased Am7 I was lost and tired Bm Am7 Am7sus4 Cadd9 You set me free from this mighty mighty fire D Cadd9 D Just in time to be C G My one true
  14. Does anyone know the chords for One True Vine? I'm awful at figuring this stuff out myself, especially piano songs, and I haven't found them posted anywhere.
  15. Would it be better if Wal-Mart bought expensive Americans products or paid the Chinese American wages and went out of business? Then two million people would lose their jobs. Or maybe every retailer should only buy American and inflation would skyrocket, hurting the standard of living for all but the most affluent Americans. I don't think that's a great solution either. I'm all for making sure workers aren't abused, but the issue is more complicated than simply raising everyone's wages.
  16. At least Gates isn't a politician. I attended A&M during his tenure, and he did a good job. Not sure how well that translates into being Secretary of Defense, but he didn't seem like a complete douche.
  17. Thanks for the recommendations. I picked up copies of The Invisibles, Sandman, Hellblazer, and Y: The Last Man today.
  18. Are there any adult comic book readers out there? I stopped reading in my early teens a decade ago, but I've recently gotten the urge to start again. Does anyone have any recommendations of comics written for adult audiences? I have no interest in caped crime fighters, and there seem to be so many titles anymore that I don't know where to start.
  19. I really wanted to like Jay's stuff and kept buying his records, but everything except Palace just bores me. It's not bad in a way that makes me want to throw things at the stereo, but it just doesn't do anything for me. I would recommend checking out Palace, though. It's hit and miss, but there's some good stuff on there (like "Venus..." or "Forgiven").
