You gotta figure that Dolly gets the best work done, so no tacky Hollywood plastic surgery. The joke that she always uses it that it "costs alot to look this cheap" is certainly true. But she sounds great, compared to alot of her contemporaries, even the stellar Emmylou, who can no longer hit the high notes. Colbert is fake, because he plays a character and does it so well that on the nights like the one we are discussing it is slightly incongruous to see him actually break the character. He is a pretty good singer actually. LouieB

I was lucky recently to get a 10 inch copy of this LP on red vinyl very recently, which was rather beat up and priced to go. But despite the rather poor look of the record, it actually played really nicely and sounded great despite the lo-fi recording from the era. There are always lots of vinyl copies of Time Out floating around. Columbia made a ton of dough off of it as did Brubeck himself. LouieB

It was, but I keep hoping at some point that Dolly will stop looking exactly the same as she did 30 or 40 years ago. It is kind of weird. LouieB

Sad day indeed. And to think he was accused of selling out when Time Out actually sold millions of copies. (Writtten by saxophonist Paul Desmond.) He had a great career to be sure. Howard Reich's obit from the Trib. LouieB

Yup me too, but that doesn't mean much. If they wanted to make some serious dough they should beat all the boots and release every single basement tape take from all the best sources in one big box set and be done with it. That's what most people want, not the Cash or Harrison sessions which from what I have heard are only so so (Cash being better than Harrison.) Meanwhile some high quaility performances from the gospel years in the same vein as the Rolling Thunder Review set would be in order too. LouieB

Scrapping the bottom of the Dylan barrel I guess. Somehow there must be better stuff that has been on bootlegs to drag out of the vaults, but there may be some interesting stuff here. LouieB

Graham Parker - Not quite as old as these other guys.

Much of his solo stuff on Bloodshot is worth checking out, but partially because I like Bloodshot in general and they gave him a shot when he had nowhere else to go. Not sure why the new one is not on Bloodshot, but whatever. I have seen him several times post Rumour, but never with the Rumour and would try and see him in Chicago, but it is an XRT concert for the kids and just not up for that madhouse at Park West (the site of my first show with him just post Rumour back in the 80s.) I am from Ohio and had no idea where Nelsonville was. Lucky folks in southeast Ohio. LouieB

I had only caught part of this story of late, but here is an article from today's NY Times on the return of Graham Parker and the Rumour. Since VC seems obsessed with musicians from the 60s of late, here is information about someone from the 70s who is also in his 60s. LouieB His Perfect Role: Rocker of a Certain Age By BRUCE HEADLAM Tarrytown, N.Y. LAST Saturday afternoon the Tarrytown Music Hall was shaking as the Rumour, one of Britain’s best-known backup bands, rehearsed its 1979 song “ .” The only thing missing was the singer, Graham Parker, who, together with the band, defined the

what the hell are hits??? No one has hits anymore. Ferguson had a run with Spirit, Mungo Jerry and Paper Lace were one hit wonders, but Buffy Saint-Marie was a different artist (in more ways than one) and still has a cult following. Indie rock figures don't have hits. If they did they would lose all cachet; you know that old timer...... LouieB

Since I am only on season 1 (moving as fast as I can), I would agree. I completely stopped watching some of the regular network shows that forgot what the purpose was (House should have stuck to doctoring and Bones and CSI to forensic science) and lost me. The pacing on Homeland is pretty fast with a good plot twist for each episode, so they have not lost me yet. LouieB

Of your list clearly Andrew Bird and Neko (some of my personal faves) have hit the big time, although Neko's star has faded some of late. You forgot my favorite which is the Perneice Brothers (maybe you figured I mentioned them already) which even at the time I said would not last (even though they sounded good.)Ted Leo, Richard Buckner,Calexico, Rhett Miller, M Ward have all had staying power to me, but all with the possible exception of M. Ward are nearing the end of their normal shelf life. (Okay Calexico has some staying power I suppose, but when they have veered from the SW moody stuff

Not to get into old fogey territory here, but even a few years ago I still bought quite a few albums by new artists and even new albums by old artists, but I find that at my advancing age that i buy way way more old material, both by living and dead artists than ever before. So I poped for the new Dylan and Cohen and while both are pretty good, they clearly sound like guys at the ends of their careers. I also recently bought a whole bunch of CDs by kids of famous artists (Thompson, Guthrie, Jennings, etc) and found these offspring to lack any distinctive voice of their own. We all know what

Once again, really late to the show, since I don't have cable and honestly don't like series like this in general. I must say I am caught up in Homeland, about 3/4 of the way through the first season on DVD. It is entertaining enough, but when the soap opera aspects kick in I always yell "back to the spying." I realize all the improbable interpersonal stuff has interest to some people, but the improbable espionage and conspiricy stuff is what I watch the show for. Also I have a thing about Mandy Patikin, who was ridiculous on the horrendous Criminal Minds, but in this series is pretty watc

Sadly I was a dork and never went to the original Checkerboard, which was in the hood, which the new one is not (Hyde Park is a nice neighborhood, don't get me wrong.) I have never seen this either. I find it interesting that the top two threads at the moment are the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Followed in close succession by the Who, Neil Young and the Dead. Still alot of interest in the dinosaur groups. edit- In fact on the music discussions every group mentioned is over ten years old including the Lips and the Black Crowes. Somehow I miss the VC buzz band discussions of yestery

Going to Chicago....what to do, see, stay, etc.
LouieB replied to LouieB's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
There hasn't been much action here lately. Anyone coming to Chicago for the holidays? LouieB -
They do sound similar I guess. LouieB

Opps. sorry. I have deleted it. Old news perhaps, but for those of us not following this stuff carefully, it was pretty interesting. LouieB Duely deleted. LouieB

Not being much of a Dead Head I don't venture in here much, but for those of you who are interested, you really need to get last weeks New Yorker, with a huge article about the Dead's tape vault and all the politics and stuff surrouding it. Some of the details are a bit much for me, but I must admit it is pretty interesting. Can seem to find a link to the actual article, so you may need to go to your library and get this (gasp.) Let me keep looking. LouieB

That's too bad. Trying to remember folks we have not met in person (someone maybe has met him in real life I hope) have real troubles and cope with real tragedy. But it is difficult not to imagine the internet Sparky, the libertarian, liberal government hating personna's reaction to such government programs as FEMA and the whole raft of first and second responders that the rest of us think the government should support instead of leaving that up to the private sector. As clean-up continues and those affected by the hurricane are going to need long term help from the government (local, state

Somehow this thread has not been a Sparky magnet. LouieB

Well yea, he did, but others talked about the Fed with him. Even now I don't understand why that was part of the discussion. it's like alot of stuff that he threw at us for months. The job description for POTUS is not all that flexible really. They manage the Executtive Branch of government, not the Congress, not the judiciary and not even some of the other government departments (I am think the FBI, the Pentagon, etc.) even when ostensibly they ARE under the President.
