I don't listen to the radio. Unless one of these shows is on: Car Talk Live At the Met Whaddya Know? With Michael Feldman A Prarie Home Companion Weekend America Studio 360 This American Life

OK, so I was reading "Learning How to Die" a couple weeks back, and naturally, I was very enlightened by Chapter 15, but this part blew my mind: At first I thought, "No way." Now here I am listening to it tonight, over and over again. I'd imagine that Kot is talking about the intro, where you have the clearly audible thumping and the piano. But the guitar part is, no question, a guitar. There's no way you could get a snare drum to sound like that... Is there? I know that effects and processors can do amazing things - I go to a college that has a $2 million studio for a class room, and i

Yeah... Really is a shame when people of such critical acclaim receive very little of what's due to them.

Boris with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow, now out in Japan, coming out in the US in March. I normally don't like psych (Kurihara's specialty) but Boris shows once again how different they are from other "metal" bands they can be on this in the most beautiful ways, and Kurihara is definitely weighing in on the tunes too. Highly suggest.

I never thought of that. I suppose it could be possible that despite being a huge influence on all things post-whatever, they get little money.

Oh yeah - I forgot about my 45 of The Beatles - Helter Skelter. It has Got to Get You Into My Life on the flip, but it's definitely all about the a-side. I think it was originally a radio promo when the red and blue albums were made. -
Eureka's freaks me out even more, and the frog and teddy bear from "Halfway to a Threeway" freaks me out even more than that.

Reading Pitchfork this afternoon and apparently Slint is scheduled to play Primavera Sound Festival in Spain, and apparently they're going to perform Spiderland in its entirety at this festival. Maybe it's just me, but isn't this backwards for them to do, since they sold their equipment on eBay in 2005? I thought the idea was that they sold the equipment for charity and then used it as a way of saying, "We're done!" I don't get it. Can someone explain to me the logic going on here?

I got one for you guys. Biff Rose! Bowie covered his songs a couple times, the main time being "Fill Your Heart" on Hunky Dory, but that's it.

Looks like I need to make more room on my rack for the Jim O'Rourke section. He also has two CDs where he plays guitar in a Japanese improv/jazz group led by saxophonist Akira Sakata. Oi! Damn it Jim, stop being so prolific!

Phill Niblock! I haven't heard of that release either. Isn't that one of the soundtracks to one of his films?

Can't wait for it to come to my neck of the woods. I hope it's at one of the indie theaters - nothing beats a great movie and a glass of beer. -
Not looking good for Castro
Ludwig Von Drake replied to bjorn_skurj's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Anyone think that he might cave to get surgery from the US? It's a possibility since he's been able to keep Cuba stable all these years. And if he dies, chances are that the power will be handed over to his brother Raul. See Who Is Raul Castro? for more info. -
Great place to start with Devo is to listen to their two-CD anthology collection "Pioneers Who Got Scalped." It's got those early singles and it's just a nice way to start off on the vastness that's Devo's music/ideology.

Now I'm even more interested. I'm going to have to ask my music man to see if he can order it for me.

Spiritual message. She was not the best of musicians, but she was able to still create some beautiful albums.

My 45s of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds singles. I have them all save Brian's solo release of "Caroline, No." Though they're mostly pretty worn... I have a promo 45 of Pink Floyd's "When The Tigers Broke Free" from 1980 or so. An interesting story behind this 45... "The Final Cut" was meant to be the soundtrack to the Wall film, featuring the movie versions of the Wall songs in addition to the new ones exclusive to the movie. If this single was given a proper release, it would have had the film version of "Bring the Boys Back Home" on the b-side. As we all know though, Roger Waters and the rest -
Weird, I haven't heard of this (and neither has This guy). But you have me interested... It appears to not be that expensive either (under 25 dollars on Amazon). It looks like though, to me anyway, some home work is required, especially after reading Wikipedia's entry on Tōru Takemitsu. I had a feeling that Jim was going to be in Japan working on Japanese music, but not like this. I would have figured him joining the ranks with the Improvised Music from Japan crew.

The duo Sparks. I also agree with Daniel Bejar and Randy Newman.

Her albums set a landmark in jazz. Sadly, like you point out, her husband was a giant, so she was always in his shadow (not on purpose, of course). And by the time she made her most important work, most people avoided it because the cynical 70s have already crushed most peoples' dreams concerning the messages she was presenting with her music... Personally, I hope that her death will let people be able to take a second chance with her without the weight of the times (the late 1960s, 1970s) preventing them to fully take on the task.

If the first Loose Fur album was a blueprint to how Yankee Foxtrot Hotel was going to sound in the final product, I'm going with the way Born Again In The USA sounds. More focused and tight (The Ruling Class), almost power-poppy (Hey Chicken), with a slight touch of non-pretentious avant-garde (Wreckroom). Then again, I have not been following the band's new songs as they have appeared live so far, so what do I know?

My personal beef is that when a band completely changes a song when I've been looking forward to experiencing the original version of the tune live. Experiencing anything that means a lot to you, in this case music, is totally different than listening to a CD of said music. Live, a song isn't limited by the stereo system of crappy home digital systems. Can you imagine feeling the low-end of that droning cello at the end of IATTBYH go through your body? It'd be fucking amazing I'm sure. I know that if I was a little more naive, I'd be expecting to feel it. However, I know a little bit more th

Well, from what I remember, the company that took the footage and edited it together did a horrible job, according to the band. The band wanted the film to be re-edited, the company then just walked away. Where the footage is, I do not know. I highly doubt a petition will get Wilco to release the DVD, especially now that we have Sunken Treasure...
