  1. Clearly, you missed the memo about Keynesian economics being right.

I assume you are being sarcastic. Hope your a fan of Austrian economics, it is what we need to be teaching and our hope for a free and good future.

  2. [oversimplified rant]I think it's good news for the likes of him. The depression ended because of new government spending programs that put money back into the economy by creating jobs for the people on those bread lines (and, of course, because jobs were created due to the war). This time around, the money is going to things like bailing out the banks. But because we've got more safety nets than we had in the 1930s, the people won't be going nuts and doing things like organizing unions and joining the communist party.[/oversimplified rant]

Correction: The depression was caused by Hoover by carrying out the same failed ideas that our government is now trying to carry out. Roosevelt made things worse by the New Deal, but many people relive history incorrectly so we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

  3. That number is just of very recent announcements. You have to figure with Circuit City going belly up, alot of retailers will also follow. Uneployment is gonna sky. Good luck everyone, its gonna get tough.

    Newest Cuts:

Corning and Clariant became the latest companies to slash jobs, with Corning cutting up to 4,900 positions and Clariant eliminating 1,000 workers.

  4. So I finally got my Edge card yesterday. I found out that the original R4 maker no longer makes them so all the R4s being sold are knock-offs. From my research, the Edge was the best choice for the money (~$15 including shipping from Hong Kong and I got a 4 GB micro-SD card from meritline.com for $10 w/free shipping). It works great. My only complaint is that the micro SD card is tough to get out of the cart. have not tried running NES ROMS on it. Looks like I would have to run an additional emulator for that.

I dont have much resistance with my card, but maybe not a big deal. There is a NES emulator and games that barely take up any room.

  5. "The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government."

This quote is why our government doesnt get it and why we will continue on the same road we've been on. It's the same generic mentality.

  6. i think maybe people were a little harsh on Zen on this one.

i'm not complaining about the ticket prices, and i hope they sell out and make a lot of money, but i won't be going this year because they're just too expensive for me. at this point, $100 or $200 just means so much to me. i believe his point was that he is worried he won't eventually be able to afford to see these shows. and that this school is lucky to have jeff throwing these concerts, and yes, ultimately some children are really the lucky ones.

i hope the show is even better then it was last year and that all that can afford to pay the hefty price enjoy the shit out of it. not sure there's any reason to rip Zen a new one though.

cool, someone on my side. I could afford the $100 ticket, but any higher and I think its probably out my range. I just hope they dont raise prices cause there seems to be interest in making more money this year.

I'm waiting till friday for my tix.

  7. Strengthening or Weakening the Economy?

    by Ron Paul

The economic situation continues to deteriorate this week as past and future bailouts were discussed on Capitol Hill. The debate was over the accountability of already disbursed TARP money, and on whether or not to release remaining funds. Banks that had already been bailed out before are looking for more money to fill the black holes that are their balance sheets, warning that they are simply too big to fail. However, whatever

  8. That's an unfair thing to say, Zen. The benefit raises money to create scholarships for kids who cannot afford to attend the school. That doesn't equate into enriching the school itself. At least that's how I understand it.

Well the school is lucky to have Jeff play for them and they are getting enriched by having huge scholarships for kids to attend. Just saying they are making out good.

I guess if people will pay the prices, then go ahead and charge what you can. I would. I just hope the show doesnt price me out eventually.

  9. No. The front area is reserved for people more closely involved with the reasons for the benefit, and are more expensive than $150.

$150 was the price listed for the general seating area, on a blog associated with one of the causes. These are the same tickets that, if you wait until next Wednesday as Susan posted, will come down in price to $100 for the general public. The caveat is, as always, these tickets won't be available if everyone involved with the benefit buys them all up before the general sale. It hasn't happened in the past two years.

(I am 99% sure this is correct information.)

Last year I dont think it even sold out till almost show time, so these are somewhat easy tickets to get. Also ticketmaster list them to go on sale tommorow at noon.

  10. "Bush attached some conditions. The loans would be called back if the automakers cannot prove they are viable by March 31, an administration official said."

Let's see how they will get people to buy GM or Chrysler in the next 3 months thats gonna prove something. The cars havent changed at all and the economy is only getting worse.

  11. I know you don't mean it this way but you make it sound as if the money just disappears. As in, it's gone. When in actuality, it allows for these companies to continue paying their employees, their suppliers, etc. We aren't just flushing 17BN dollars down the toilet. People will absolutely benefit from this.

People will benefit from this and in the spirit of Christmas, it is a good gesture to all the innocent victims. Let the companies stay alive a little longer.

But when it comes to finance of the country, its a waste and a loss and we will pay for it later.

  12. Full pay and benefits for a at least a full month during the holidays. Thats a nice gift. Good time to look for a new job.

Car demand is down and wont go back to where it used to be for a long time so dont expect to have a thriving car market when the bailout comes. Things are happening the way it should so far, hopefully the government doesnt screw things up too much.

  13. 5.5% 30 Yr Fixed. I only buy things I know I can pay for. Everything is mostly already paid for (Except the house of course). As far as deals we got about 12% off the asking price when all was said and done which seems fair to me. I just dwindled down my last 10 years of savings but whats money for if you don't use it? I also was fortunate to have very generous friends and family who mostly gave cash at our wedding which surely was a major help!

Congrats! You did good. You really set yourself well. Thats the way to live.

  14. In what may be the worse economy in the last century I have never spent more money. In the last 30 days alone I bought a house, washer, dryer, fridge, 2 TVs, Sleeper Couch, Bed, Dining Room Set, Coffee Table, Area Rugs, Holiday gifts for friends and family and had the trees trimmed in the yard. I always seems to do the opposite of realty! Hopefully I am not completley out of my mind! :stunned

You could be doing a great thing for yourself.

The house is the big question. Depends how much of a deal you got on it. Most likely you got a great deal. It will probably still lose value as time goes by but alot of it was lost already. Also rates are soo low at this point, you may never get this buying opportunity. Hope you got a fixed rate for 15 or 30. If you got an adjustable one, I would seriously thing about changing it.

Also all those things you said are useful things you will live with for years to come. Those are what is important, because when the dollar collapses, neccessities with cost high. As long as you didnt get all designer furniture, you are doing good.

Just hope you didnt put it all on credit. And even if you did, you'll probably get bailed out. Here in America, we reward the irresponsible.

  15. A fake economy is not maintainable. We cant just keep buying cars and homes and expect property values to always rise. We have to learn to change and adapt.

Yes, a collapse in an industry will take down many businesses. America needs restructuring, we dont need more houses or cars. We dont need fancier things. We cant live the way we used to anymore. We need to find a way to make our country work and make money.

This will not happen if we prop up bad businesses. There will be job losses and companies going out of business. This is what happens and is happening. It isnt fair when somoeone goes bankrupt and doesnt pay you you're money but there is no other way. You cant just take money from the public for that loss. All companies have risk, that risk has to be there or else it's not real.
