  1. great track ...

most of bob's best recent tracks are mid-tempo (the blondes, butler stands for all of us, miles under the skin, no island, circle saw boys club, etc.)

doesn't this one start with the exact same chord as miles under the skin?

    good stuff

Just the opening chord, but that's the extent of it. The second chord in Miles is a third, where Question Girl moves a half-step. Great track tho.

    "all right the coastline"

    Done !

    H-A-T-E

Is that how you spell love in your dictionary

    K-I-C-K

    Pronounced as kind

    F-U-C-K

Is that how you spell friend in your dictionary

    Black on black

    A guidebook for the blind

Well now that I can see my eyes won't weep

Now that I can hear your song sounds cheap

Now that I can talk all your corn I'll reap

I'm not so sure that Joey wed a Virgin Mary

There are no words for me inside your dictionary

    S-L-A-P

Is that how you spell kiss in your dictionary

    C-O-L-D

    Pronounced as care

    S-H-I-T

Is that how you spelt me in your dictionary

    Four-eyed fool

    You led 'round everywhere

Now that I can see it's the queen's new clothes

Now that I can hear all your poison prose

Now that I can talk with my tongue unfroze

I'm not so sure of Santa or the buck tooth fairy

There are no words for me inside your dictionary

Now your laughter has a hollow ring

But the hollow ring has no finger in

So let's close the book and let the day begin

    And our marriage be undone

Did Rich post this on the website or on DTS ?

  4. the dayton mafia says that about every record bob puts out. and then it turns out to be crap. "off to business" was supposed to be as good as anything he'd ever done. and wasn't "elephant jokes" supposed to be "the next alien lanes?" give me a break, gys. comparing any of these completely disposable records to alien lanes is an insult to gbv.

i keep buying them, but i will be stunned if bob ever puts out another record that's half as good as FaCE. sad to see a guy i consider the greatest songwriter ever tarnishing his legacy like this.

Be it not for the serpentine rain dodger is actually the title, and it's a very old track that first popped up on a fan comp called "30 Songs" with just bob & guitar

the takeovers version is chris slusarenko's treatment - adding drums and bass and some more guitar to the existing track. great stuff but dates back to early 1990s

I find it a waste of time to keep comparing everything to his '92-'97 period. It just won't measure up. I feel part of the charm of that era was the whole lo-fi thing and recording out of the pressure of circumstance and condition. Is 'Off To Business" as good as those aforementioned records, including FaCE ? No, but there are 3-4 songs I'd rather have than not. I do like 'Elephant Jokes' quite a bit and find it to have a lot in common with The Keene Bros record. It may not be as consistent but there are certainly 7-8 good 'rock' songs present.

That being said, I'd love an MP3 (PM please) of Bobby & guitar = 'The Rain Dodger'.

    - P.A.L. (an underrated Pollard 'classic')

  5. Last track on Brown Submarine.

I'll have to do a top 50 or 100. It will be heavily dominated by the holy trinity (B000, AL,& UTBUTS). But for now, I'll jump in and grade the solo albums and some of the off-the-beaten-path records that I have. Most of these I have gotten in the year or so since Brown Submarine has been released to see what I've missed. As you can tell from the grades, I didn't miss much.

    C(grade) = Turn to Red

    >>>>The Takeovers record prolly does deserve a 'C' rating, but there is one track deep into the record, sounding like it was recorded on a 2-track, bounced back 'n' forth which is as good as any classic Pollard track circa Alien Lanes/B1000 = 'Be It Not For The Serpentine Dodger'

  8. I'd hold off Todd as there are only a couple of good songs. The songs Richard recorded were left as is and just added to the record. That was basically the extent of their collaboration. That said, Richard's 'Grapes of Wrath' is one of the best songs on the record.

  9. Roll On, No Turning Back, & Pushed Too Far get me like the above do.

As stated in a previous post, I'd include Dust of Daylight in that exclusive group of Windfall, Tear-Stained Eye & Methamphetamine.

That said, Roll On & Pushed To Far are not far behind.

  10. All of the new stuff just feels weird to me. When I listen to "Down To The Wire" it is like he doesn't care at all about phrasing or pacing or anything it is just word jumble over the top of decent tunes.

After listening to Dust of Daylight, I dont understand how you could feel that way. It's a near perfect song, which in my opinion will be recognized over time alongside Windfall, Tear-Stained Eye and Methamphetamine as "classics" from the Farrar oeuvre.

  11. Dear Stephen @ Pitchfork,

You need to listen to the record 5 or 6 more times. Then enroll in a course on non-fiction writing. Then punch a clock for a few years to gain life experience. Then scam free records from your day job. Then consider writing for a jerkwater music website. Then think better of it and slink off into the night.

    Jay Bennett RIP

    26/05/09

We are very sorry to have to report the death of Jay Bennett, the former Wilco member who worked with Billy on the hugely successful Mermaid Avenue albums.

Jay, a multi-instrumentalist, died of unknown causes in his sleep at home in Illinois over the weekend.

Billy said: "I'm very sorry to hear that Jay Bennett has passed away, aged just 45. He was a cat who could get the most beautiful music out of any instrument you put in front of him, which made him a real asset during the Mermaid Avenue sessions.

"It was his playing on guitar and keyboards that, more than any of us, defined the sound of those records. He put his heart and soul into everything he played and his loss will be deeply felt among the musicians he worked with. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

Grant Showbiz, who produced the Mermaid Avenue albums with Billy and Wilco, said: "Jay Bennett was a wonderful musician with an enormous brain. He was an integral part of the Mermaid Avenue sessions with his ready wit and his ability to pick up any instrument and make it sound great.

"We had a large amount of gear set up in a circle around the central booths of Billy and Jeff, and Jay was pretty much 360 degrees involved with the instrumentation.

"Billy and I called him 'The Cat In The Hat'... he had that mischievous other-worldlyness of a slightly eccentric professor. He will be sadly missed."

Billy's manager, Peter Jenner, added: "Jay was a vital part of the team that put Mermaid Avenue together... He always seemed a key creative person. He could play many instruments and was always positive, innovative and creative on all of them, on any song.

"I think we all enjoyed working with Jay, and we have all lost a fine musician and an open, warm human being. An unsung hero."

  14. I think the idea was not that albums are mixed on shitty speakers, but that at some point during the process, some producers check their work on shitty speakers to make sure it sounds good on those, too.

    That's correct.

"Real world" speakers are generally what's used when mixing records. When you want to get excited by the "sound" of the tracks, it's very common to switch to another set of speakers. While they sound generally horrible during playback, Yamaha NS-10's are still used for mixing records. The reason being tracks that sound good on playback tend to sound amazing in any other listening environment. That's one example. The obvious last resort is taking a disc out to the car to listen as well.
