Paul's running as a third party would really hurt the republicans. with his son in leadership position in republican party, i doubt he would do that.

in general terms, i do not believe the unserious people present the biggest challenge to productive disagreement on political issues (although that may be the main issue here). i think uninformed people most prevent productive dialogue on political issues. the necessity of appealing to the (largely uninformed) masses has precluded honest debate on complex issues that do not have a right and wrong side and require compromise (imho).
