MMJ was indeed great - I guess it was inevitable but unfortunately the orchestra was pretty buried in the mix and their contributions were overshadowed by the (awesome) noise of the band itself. After seeing and hearing some clips of the band with the Boston Pops I was interested to hear if they had worked up new arrangements or even to hear those same arrangements live and in person, but for the most part it was a moot point ... Why are the lawn seats specified as "for listening only"? I know you wouldn't have a great view of the stage from the lawn (or any view at all past the front fifth or so), but is there going to be a barrier of some sort between the seats and the stage?

I like this new song, but it kind of feels unfinished ... like they gave a rough cut to the soundtrack folks. Hopefully there's a full album following this.

Agreed on the unplugged album - the "interludes" can be interesting but it's a lot of rambling ... although it's a pretty fascinating look into her state of mind at the time. Regardless, songs like Mr. Intentional and Adam Lives In Theory are pretty awesome.

So true - he was in such good voice last night, it was really amazing. The venue was beyond awesome ... it was just perfect for a full band acoustic show like that. Everything sounded like on the fly, studio quality tracks. I felt very lucky to be there. I would definitely see the Black Angels, but I've also seen them at the Empty Bottle about 5 times in the last year. Yo La Tengo and !!! are not only playing opposite each other, but that's right when the main stage will start to turn into clusterfruck town in advance of Pearl Jam closing the weekend. Since I've yet to see MMJ (save for a few songs at Lolla last year) and I really want to see Pearl Jam, my priority is getting a good spot at that stage. In short, no there isn't much else on Sunday I'm too eager to see.

I want to see MMJ and Pearl Jam as well ... my tickets for 2005 and 2006 weren't $80 combined. I'll wait it out and hang around craigslist to see what I can get. edit to fix spelling

It looks like it's a collection of reggae tunes from the Trojan Records vaults, chosen by Johnny Greenwood (yes, that Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead fame and fortune). Ellen had some good jokes ... "Without blacks or Jews there wouldn't be any Oscars ... or people named Oscar" (paraphrasing). I loved the way they introduced the awards for the Screenplay and (especially) Editing categories - showing a short example of how a clip was edited was genius.

They went from the Empty Bottle here in Chicago (tiny) to a HUUUUUGE show at Lollapalooza in 2005, followed by a show at Riviera later that fall (which holds around 2300). The Chicago Theatre tops out around 3500 so it's a logical progression from the Riviera, but three nights makes it a large jump. Since it's really the only midwestern show (except for maybe Toronto) and it's a weekend, it seems about right. At least they had the good sense not to play the Aragon.

AliveAcoustic is a wonderful album and showcases their songwriting side - the companion disc, AliveElectric, shows off the improvisational jazz-ish side that they were initially known for ... both of these are live CDs. Eisenhower is a pretty radical departure for them, but it came off really well. Children of December is just a flat out awesome tune. Their earlier studio album "Does" is also really good. They going to be touring by themselves throughout March - I definitely recommend catching them if you get a chance.

I was just out in Portland this past weekend - I was lucky enough to get three beautiful clear days in a row, and spent a day skiing at Timberline on Mt. Hood, a day driving to Cannon Beach on the coast and then a day hiking in Forest Park right near the city. At night we tried a few restaurants and went to the Rouge Brewery bar that they have in the city. Overall I was really impressed - the city itself was really cool and I was impressed with the rather expansive light rail system, especially since you could take it to the airport.
