  1. That's a great way to kick off an October and end a work week.
  2. Glad you guys like it. Knocked me on my ass the first time I heard it too.
  3. I came across this a few months ago. It has been in heavy rotation since. The album was released in in 2006, but sounds like something recorded in Muscle Shoals circa 1972. I'm not sure our music tastes and interests always match up, but I do think you will like this. He isn't reinventing the wheel, but the boy can sing and the band is on fire. Here's the review from iTunes: Oakland's Mike Therieau sings rock 'n' roll steeped in the timeless, twangy tones of bygone country soul records. (Some listeners called his local radio station to ask if the tracks they were playing from his debut,
  4. Not a fan of Ralph, Billy, and Poncho screaming several feet away from the microphone? Testy today Tim. I like it.
  5. I think you can add Freedom, Harvest Moon, and Sleeps Like Angels to that list. Also, while not a proper studio album, Weld is fucking fantastic. I've seen him close to twenty times over the time period you allude to. Pretty relevant live performer if you ask me. His recent output can't stack up to his 60's/70's material. But, then again, not many (if any) artists can measure up to that period. I'm curious as to who has given him a "free pass." His fans? Critics? Record executives? I think it's a widely-held belief that he can be fairly inconsistent and has been known to follow his m
  6. I think Chrome Dreams II perfectly fits your description. It is an uneven record, but I absolutely LOVE No Hidden Path and Dirty Old Man. I'm also a big fan of Ordinary People and Spirit Road. The Way is solid too. The rest? Not so much. As far a stuff he's released since 2000 goes, I think Greendale is an absolute masterpiece. I love that album. I really liked Living With War when it came out, but I can't say I find myself going back to it these days. It is what it is - an angry, passionate, off-the-cuff response to a situation that was riddled with bullshit. In that sense, it's cl

  8. I guess that's why I'm passionate about music, but have very little interest in poetry.
  9. On the one hand you acknowledge that Ambulance Blues is a classic, but you are continuing to say it is weak songwriting. I simply disagree with you. I am pretty sure I did not miss your point. From your posts I gather that you find some of his writing to be awkward. I guess (after going back and reading the lyrics) you can look past it on a song like Ambulance Blues. It's the newer, less established material that you feel more comfortable railing. P.S. - Motorcycle Mama doesn't bother me at all. The lyrics fit the songs perfectly. It's not supposed to be any deeper than it is. Your "
  10. Yikes. He's written his fair share of clunkers, but I don't consider "Ambulance Blues" to be among those. Overall, I think he is in an elite category as a songwriter. That's about as low as the bar goes with Shakey. Fork in the Road is awful.
  11. I really, really want to love this album. The concept is so cool - how and where he recorded it. However, the songs just don't draw me in. I truly tried.
  12. Some nice stuff on that sampler with "Bayou Tortous" being the piece de resistance.
  13. Nice. Been listening to a good amount of Doug myself lately.
