I do not believe our lack of compassion is the child of religion, any more than I believe religion gave birth to compassion. To a large extent I agree, but religion is in the unique (and, I would add, unparalled) position of justifying and perpetuating (and, in many cases, simply creating out of thin air) those fears and abuses of power
