  1. Really? Would liked to have seen that. Alan Tyler is still gigging regularly, and I occasionally see the other members of the band at random gigs in London. Went to see the excellent Alberta Cross (attention Neil Young fans) a couple of months back at Hoxton and noticed the Rockingbirds guitar player two or three stone up from that he was, hair a bit longer, slumped up against a wall.....oh what might have been! I remember seeing the Rockingbirds at my local venue The Old Trout (RIP) in Windsor and then in front of about 20 people at the Municipal Hall in Pontypridd in the Welsh Valleys.....
  2. .....and they came from London! Was very much into them around 1992 when their first (of two I think) albums came out, self-titled and a minor classic IMO. Saw them live several times in small venues and they were great. They didn't sound like anyone else at the time (certainly not in the UK), lots of pedal steel and great tunes and were dubbed 'urban country' though really they belonged in the alt country scene that flourished a few years later. Sadly for them they imploded after a couple of albums before the scene mushroomed. Shame, wrong place, wrong time and shamefully now all but forg
  3. Extensive sounds like Madrid, Barca, Bilbao, Zaragoza and maybe somewhere south like Seville. Think I might join you down there though I'm sure there'll be something UK later in the summer, maybe a festival or two and probably the Brixton date that never happened last time.
  4. Well, the only time AOAF was played around filming time it opened the show at Val Air in Des Moines so if this wasn't filmed it can't be on the DVD. Anyone go and see cameras? Getting a bit anal about this probably but I do love that song and really hope it's on there. Also hope it's not too heavy on SBS material. Maybe it'll be documentary-ish with lots of addiitional songs on bonus discs etc. That would be a great result.
  5. Naming the DVD 'Ashes Of American Flags' suggests that that particular song will be on it (one of the live highlights for me off KT). Having looked at the setlists though from both Ryman and Cain's Ballroom it wasn't played either night and hardly at all (once I think) around the time they were filming last year. Anyone know what other shows were filmed?
  6. Spain? (extensive) Again? Not the UK? Again? Look, I know the weather's nice down in Spain late spring/May etc but what about those cancelled UK dates from last time? And didn't Spain get gigs that time too? Makes me think the 'conficting schedules' reason for pulling out of those five or six UK dates in late 2007 was actually because of not great ticket sales, as they seem very keen to dash back to Spain, not to mention Tweedy's fairly recent Spanish/Mallorca shows. If that's so it's a shame. There's a hardcore of devotees over here, even if (like much of the US) the general public ar
  7. IMO One Wing is a step up from just about all of SBS (minus Impossible Germany perhaps). Very reminiscent of Radiohead I'd say, especially the keyboard break just before the guitar pyrotechnics at the end. Never mind a WIP (work in progress) as Jeff called it in that lollapolooza gig, it sounds fine and finished already to me!
  8. Anyone consider Radiohead pretentious then? (and by association Wilco, the erm, 'American' Radiohead) Plenty I know think Radiohead are up thir own asses.
  9. Yes, 'The Great Escape' was not in the same league as 'Parklife'. 'This Is A Low', 'End Of A Century' and 'Til The End' all classics.
  10. Always thought there was too much animosity between Alabarn and Coxon for this to happen. Have spoken a few times of late to sticksman Dave Rowntree and he never felt if would come to this. He and Alex James have been doing bits of general media work. Good to see a band reforming with all original members intact. Should be interesting. Albarn has confirmed himself one of the great luminaries of British pop after his other work with Gorillaz and The Good The Bad and the Queen (with Paul Simonon). Expect the tabloids will try to whip up the old Blur/Oasis rivalry again. I remember well that
  11. Thanks mate, now I can hear myself being humiliated by Mr T all over again (just before Jesus etc). Met you before the show, thanks for getting this up.
  12. Just had a gander at the new edition of Mojo (here in the UK) and on their playlist this month (best album tracks, online tracks, whatever's out there) they've gone with 'Wilco The Song' taken from the Colbert show. 'It's brilliant' is the verdict with a line or two of description, something along the lines of a Roxy-style stomp. It also directs readers to chicagoismildlyinteresting.blogspot.com to hear it.
  13. Talking of which. You ever read that book '1776'? It's really good. I never realised that when they actually declared the independence thing the rebels were actually having their asses kicked from pillar to post. It was only the following year that they actually got it together in NJ and the Brits fucked off home. And I'm just wondering whether the British army/navy is/are or was/were.......
  14. Doc, it might be a singular group but they are a collective so they will remain 'they' just as sports teams will remain 'they'. It's just the way it are over here, and look, we invented the language. As Queen once sang : 'We is the champions, my friend'!
  15. From someone who says this sort of thing for a living I will just say that 'Ireland IS playing Spain this weekend' sounds very wrong. It's a collective noun, so 'Ireland ARE playing' it shall remain. Likewise the (collective) Wilco would never read ' Wilco IS playing live this weekend'. On the other hand 'Wilco ARE playing live this weekend' sounds just fine. Wilco, you see, is a 'they' not an 'it'. Happy?
  16. Been getting into this guy alot lately - Frank Turner - take a listen, what do you think? http://www.sendspace.com/file/1qfwm9 http://www.sendspace.com/file/eha6z0 http://www.sendspace.com/file/i15gb5
  17. Can't get it to work on Wilcoworld - just get a message saying about thanks for making change etc. Or do you have to have proof of voting or something? I can't cos I'm on the other side of the pond. Anyone have a link? Cheers
  18. Heard him yet? You should, his star is rising fast. Oft compared to Billy Bragg but a passionate live act and great storyteller and lyricist with some class tunes. Caught him in Wincester the other night, just down the road from the Railway pub where I saw John and Pat do their Autumn Defense gig a few weeks back. Here's a review: ---------------- As career paths go Frank Turner's has to be one of the most unlikely routes to 'rock' glory, stepping out from the receiving end of Paul Weller's class war manifesto. Remember how the rock icon railed against the public school privileged with the
  19. Does the auction take place on Second City site? Where is it flagged up?
  20. Anyone know if Tweedy will do any charity shows in 2009?
  21. Doesn't bother me - like them both as it happens
