  1. Yeah I voted the same....tho YAMF/SIO/HIH are all in the same league, for me. But I'm surprised too, SIO is a great tune and plays SO well in concert. The whole band seems to really groove on it. I'm also suprised Please Be Patient hasn't gotten many votes...2 so far. It's such a beautiful, simple, honest song, if you're in the mood for it. Oh well..
  2. I have another theory (surprise surprise), that people who have suffered from and come out of clinical depression can probably relate well to the transition in Tweedy's lyrics between "then and now". I count myself in that number. "Content with being blue...honestly" may sound trite or even cheesy to some, but to me it rings very true. The song to me is all about moving off the fantasy-romance plane, onto the kind of adult relationships where the partners aren't trying to "mold" each other into something else any more. We all pine for change sometimes, but you hit a point in life where you
  3. +1 HIH I can't say *why*, really...other than it's a great song, with some very very lovely guitar solos and a great showcase for Glenn's drumming prowess. Good enough to get my vote, though I don't think it's appreciably "better" than a half dozen other SBS tracks. Having said that, I'm not at all surprised YAMF is in the lead, lyrically it beats up most of the other tunes pretty handily. But I am a bit surprised at how large the margin of that lead is right now.
  4. Guys, trust me on this - I've owned a number of excellent and not-so-excellent turntables over the years from VPI, Oracle, Teres, Rega, Ariston, Dual, etc. Plastic DJ 'tables will sound like crap in your home, or at least, no better than cheap CD playback would sound. Direct drive is also generally crap, unless it's a really high end implementation. You want belt drive, and for cheap money, you probably want to look at something made in the UK or Europe, just make sure it's not 220V of course. I would HIGHLY recommend a used Rega Planar 2 or 3, as a starter model. If you have a few more
  5. Depends what you need it for, but if you're after good sound, you should consider waiting until you have $300-400. I would suggest something from Rega or Music Hall. (also found under other names... eg Moth, NAD). If you're adventurous enough to look at used 'tables, check here.
  6. Nope, never said that. I just wondered out loud whether he may have sequenced EW as the first song with a little horned devil sitting on his shoulder, that's all. Christ, the guy's only human. :shrug Word.

    Hate It Here

Fair enough, maybe he did. Tweedy made some interesting comments in Billboard on how he approached the SBS song lyrics.
  8. how about Blind Faith..? I'll date myself and offer a few more, from the 80's; Devo The Knack Simple Minds (New Gold Dream, of course) New Musik- From A To B Lenny Kravitz - Let Love Rule
  9. He suggests that the Jews didn't resist, which is patently untrue...though the real resistance probably hadn't started in 1938 when he wrote that essay. But c'mon: "to the God-fearing, death has no terror" That is the biggest crock of shit ever, and is the premise for the worst "religious" atrocities the world has known. It could just as easily have been written by Osama Bin Laden, or the Crusaders. Ghandi was out of his mind, literally.
  10. I lent my dad my copy of Chronicles quite a while back, so I'm going by my lousy memory here....what I recall he wrote was that when he met Marjorie (and Arlo) at their house on Mermaid Ave., they took a liking to each other, and there was mention of some boxes full of poems down in the basement. And I think he mused a bit on how his path might have gone differently if he'd taken on that project, at age 21 with no original songs much less records under his belt. Come to think of it, I honestly can't recall if these comments were made in Chr1 or in the 2005 interviews in No Direction Home..??
  11. I think you're right. Maybe I'm the one fucking with older Wilco fans. Insert mental image of Dylan's first electric shows, people all pissed off that he wasn't giving them "more of the same" anymore. Don't be like them, peeps! And I'm not 14 for chrissakes!! (I wish I was!)
  12. I believe that was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. SBS was made at 'The Loft', Wilco's hangout in Chicago. You can read more about that here; http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/feature/art...t_id=1003571465
  13. PLEASE understand.....I am head over heels in love with Sky Blue Sky, every song, everything about it. I said (and meant it) IF a gun were at my head, I'd probably nominate EW as the weakest song on SBS....this week at least. Every song is remarkable... EW is just a bit less remarkable than the others. It's not "flat", it's just very smoooooth.....maybe not quite what you'd expect flicking on a Wilco album. That's all. And the violins are a bit annoying. Not enough to make me dislike the song though...not at all. But they detract a bit from the fabulous keyboard work. I agree, it
  14. Navel worship is also highly underrrated.
  15. Yes, I know VW sells cars...but you don't necessarily know about all of the peripheral agreements between the corporate entities involved here. For instance the band has a clause where if the ads can be proven to double total sales of SBS, all the band members will buy Passat turbodiesels, and the six Passats will be featured on the cover of the next Wilco record. See what I mean? (I'm yankin your chain, man....relax.)
  16. Yeah, I sorta knew that. But like, I just turned 14 last week. So take it easy on me, ok?
  17. ok, ok.....the truth is, I'm really a shill who works for Volkswagen. They pay me to promote Sky Blue Sky, they really can't figure out why a lot of Wilco heads are dissing the album. But I just can't live with myself anymore, just had to come clean and tell everyone on VC. (Kidding of course..)
  18. Thanks for noticing that....I've fixed it now. Would be easier if the admins config'd the board for 12 choices vs 10. (apologies to the first 11 or so voters, your vote may be screwed up, but it was for "the greater good")
  19. Probably because he and Castro kicked ass, literally. Booted the capitalist oppressors right out of Cuba, and ushered in a new day of, well... Soviet style oppression. I agree Che's image is over commercialized to the point of being repugnant now. But I've always liked the pic below.
  20. FUCK Ghandi. Total and utter pretentious asshole. His theories on "pacifism" are whack to the point of criminality. F'rinstance? He espoused that the Jews should kill themselves and deny the Nazis the pleasure of annihilating them -- that was Ghandi's solution to the Holocaust. As a Jew who lost many relatives to the gas chambers, I have no use for that sort of pacifism.
  21. For the one I've attended so far (Aronoff), I thought the opener was explosive...Shake It Off. But the band wasn't even warmed up yet. The crowd sure was though! I'd say VC and What Light were the most enjoyable for me, with Spiders not far behind. After that, Handhsake Drugs and WOW were also excellent. The whole show was excellent......
  22. The only way I can commit myself to watching a 3-4 hour tennis final on TV is if there's some high emotions or a great rivalry. I haven't followed tennis a whole lot lately, but my impressions: Federer is a dominator, but somewhat boring at the same time. (but of course his matches with Nadal on clay have been phenomenal) He's sort of like Michael Schumacher - he's the best but he's almost a bit of a robot. Nadal, on the other hand, is all fire and passion -- a much more exciting player to watch, at least on my television.
  23. The intent was to decipher: 1. whether Tweedy could be playing some mind games with his fan base, say the way Bob Dylan or Neil Young have often done in the past. 2. what is it about SBS that seems to turn off numerous (tho by no means ALL) hardcore Wilco fans. I'm not trolling...just being curious.
  24. Fine, but a real poll is so statistically...satisfying. And allows the lurkers to "have their say" as well.
