This man wrote one of my all-time favorite songs: "Ju Ju Man" (of which I only know the Brinsley Schwarz version). But I saw this album at Amazon and want to know as much from all you fine folks as I can.

    Anyone familiar with him?

Apparently he also wrote "36 Inches High" which Nick covered on Jesus Of Cool... another one of my favorite songs.

    Damn.

  2. If it's anything like your description: "acoustic folk, classic country, bluegrass, power pop, punk, and some other stuff" I have a feeling I'll love it, those elements sound like quite the recipe for some interesting tunes.

Oh yeah.... there'll be some klezmer, too.

Seriously. (I'm talking to some clarinet players that I know about adding a little Yiddish flavor to a particular song.)

  3. Have at it:

Let me know if you like it or hate it or whatever.

Whatever you think, it sounds like nothing else I've ever done and I had a lot of fun with it.

It really does sound better LOUD.

Added a poll so that you wouldn't be uncomfortable telling me what you really think - anonymously. But comments are, of course, always appreciated.

And yeah, this will be on the next record, along with some acoustic folk, classic country, bluegrass, power pop, punk, and some other stuff. I do hope that you like this.

EDIT: And the response (even from my worst critics) has been pretty positive so far, so yay me. But y'all are a different animal.

  4. The Ramones.

    Seriously.

My guys loved The Ramones at that age... especially stuff like "Blitzkreig Bop" and "Pinhead". Think about it: simple, catchy melodies, and those great shoutalongs ("Hey! Ho! Let's Go!"; "Gabba Gabby Hey!!!").

But, you know skip the stuff like "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue", okay?

Give it a shot. I was happy that I did.

  5. Rudy Sarzo was apparently in A Nightmare on Elm Street V: The Dream Child, if any one wants to go that route.

    With Robert Englund

Who was in the original Elm Street flick with Johnny Depp

    Who screwed Winona Ryder

Who you can link to just about any band in all of indie rock!!!

  6. Rudy to Michael Meyers

Rudy played in Ozzy Osbourne's band

Ozzy sang a duet with Lita Ford

Lita Ford played in The Runaways with Michael Steele

Michael Steel played in The Bangles with Suzanna Hoffs

Suzanna Hoffs was in the first Austin Powers movie with Michael Meyers

  7. Well I don't know much of the old stuff outside of what you've mentioned (guess I'm not an expert). But I would recommend a newer Gypsy jazz group "Hot Club Of Detroit" sure they play most of the standards but man do these guys swing. I think I remember reading your also a chicago local so you MUST go see Alfonso Pontecilli at the Green Mill, its only six bucks and I'm pretty sure its every wed.; if your digging the django this is where youve got to go.

I used to live a mile or so from there, but I'm a suburban dad now, with a 9-5 (that actually begins at 6), so a Weds. at the Green Mill ain't too doable any more.

One of these days, though. Thanks for the tip!

  8. I've only got a single disc from The Rosenberg Trio and, of course I've heard plenty of Django Reinhart and Stephane Grappelli.

But, who else out there plays in this style that I should be hearing? I really like all that I've heard so far but, as is the case with a lot of distinct instrumental styles, I'm not so sure that I need a whole lot more.

    Any fans of the style?

What else do I need outside of a couple of records?

And what are the ESSENTIAL Gypsy Jazz records (Incl/ Django, et. al.)?

I don't see it talked about much, and a search revealed nothing on the boards, so...

Louie B, I'm looking your way, friend.
