The Beers I Must Drink Before I Die Thread
PopTodd replied to Gobias Industries's topic in Tongue-Tied Lightning
Guinness - Obvious, maybe, but still true. And make sure you get it at a place that KNOWS how to our it correctly!) St. Bernardus Abt 12 - The first time I tried this, I was shocked at how much was going on! A wonderful Belgian trappist ale. Oh, and it's more than 10% alcohol content assures that it's a sipping beer. Old Peculiar - Peculiar, indeed. A strange brown English ale that isn't as good as it used to be, but still better than most. Capital Brewery Triple Bock - TRIPLE BOCK?!?! Yes. It's a beautiful thing Bittb -
Yes. I could have. But I didn't. Because I forgot that thread existed. And didn't think to do a search.

I love this band. I must have heard "The Sound Of Music" (from the above album) several hundred times, but it still elicits an audible GUFFAW from me, every single damn time. Seriously. It's one of the most brilliant pieces of stupidity ever committed to tape. And you all need to hear it. PM

Okay, so I have another one: Caesaria Evora - the diva of Cabo Verde, an island off the west coast of Africa. All Portugese-language stuff, with a Carribean and African flavor. She can sing the phone book and I would melt.

Listening to Flan right now, which is my favorite. It is certainly not for everybody. But, if you're a King Missle fan, you may like Dogbowl.
-
Dogbowl It's a guy, not a band. He used to be in King Missile, before going solo. www.dogbowl.com

Hell, if I did it, nobody should get on your case about it! Checking your MS page out, now... EDIT: Dig it! Just sent you a friend request, too.

Parts is parts. -
I had someonethreated to call me in for showing my kids Duck Soup (the old Marx Brothers movie)! Like a little anarchy is a bad thing...

I can't click YouTube at work, but is the video from the night that we were all there? Can you see us? And that's a bummer that you'll be leaving before then. But it's not like you're just around the corner. Or like I'm Steve Earle.

Hi. This is my first show since the breakup of my band (Hop On Pop) and I was hoping to get some good support -- and to meet some of you VCers. Here's the poop: Todd Leiter-Weintraub, solo/acoustic set at Molly Malone's 7652 W. Madison, Forest Park 9:00 p.m. NO COVER If you want to hear some of the stuff that I do, you can hear both full-band and solo/acoustic stuff here: http://www.iacmusic.com/hoponpop Thanks for letting me post this here. I'll bump it as the show gets closer, but I do hope to meet some more of you. Todd

Completely agree.

Another UK artist: Tony Hazzard - Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard RIYL: The Hollies, Dave Clark Five, and that ilk. (This album has the original version of "Fox On the Run".) (click photo for more-lengthy description)
-
Oh, and for you Wilco fans (all of you, I presume): Dolly Varden - another Chicago alt-country band that has expanded the bounderies of the genre. Great husband/wife lead vocals, moody, atmospheric synth and organ sounds, and just flat-out great songwriting.

Yeah. Ain't it great? But, at least at my kids' ages, I'm seeing them develop their own tastes, too. My younger son has really gotten into Beethoven (which I never listen to) and traditional African music, which he is getting ME into! The older one is a rocker -- Kiss and Green Day and such. Not all of it is my thing, but it's fun to watch. And, they do like my band, of course!

I haven't seen a damn thing this year that wasn't geared toward kids. So, the best thing I've seen is: Ratitoullie

...and The Specials' "Concrete Jungle" came on the radio. From the rearview mirror, I could see the two of them look at each other wide-eyed. Then, the older one spoke up: "Dad? What is this? Turn it up! This ROCKS!" They're 6 and 8. And yes, I am proud. For many reasons, but that made me smile a really big, goofy grin.

I didn't consider the UK contingency, of course. (Sorry.) Which reminds me that there's another band that UK posters will know, but US folk probably won't: The Move - they later morphed into ELO, but the early stuff (before Jeff Lynne joined the band) is still my favorite. And their leader in those days, Roy Wood released several solo albums that are the epitome of the sublime within the ridiculous. Love that man. You UK folks, of course, know all that stuff, but this is for the benefit of the US folks who don't. EDIT: And you and I pretty much share the same favorite Bonzo moments, joss.

Some nice picks here that I have heard and many that I've heard of, but need to go hear, and several more that I've not heard of that intrigue me. Nice thread. I'll add my 2
