  1. I had someonethreated to call me in for showing my kids Duck Soup (the old Marx Brothers movie)! Like a little anarchy is a bad thing...
  2. I can't click YouTube at work, but is the video from the night that we were all there? Can you see us? And that's a bummer that you'll be leaving before then. But it's not like you're just around the corner. Or like I'm Steve Earle.
  3. Hi. This is my first show since the breakup of my band (Hop On Pop) and I was hoping to get some good support -- and to meet some of you VCers. Here's the poop: Todd Leiter-Weintraub, solo/acoustic set at Molly Malone's 7652 W. Madison, Forest Park 9:00 p.m. NO COVER If you want to hear some of the stuff that I do, you can hear both full-band and solo/acoustic stuff here: http://www.iacmusic.com/hoponpop Thanks for letting me post this here. I'll bump it as the show gets closer, but I do hope to meet some more of you. Todd
  4. Another UK artist: Tony Hazzard - Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard RIYL: The Hollies, Dave Clark Five, and that ilk. (This album has the original version of "Fox On the Run".) (click photo for more-lengthy description)
  5. Oh, and for you Wilco fans (all of you, I presume): Dolly Varden - another Chicago alt-country band that has expanded the bounderies of the genre. Great husband/wife lead vocals, moody, atmospheric synth and organ sounds, and just flat-out great songwriting.
  6. Yeah. Ain't it great? But, at least at my kids' ages, I'm seeing them develop their own tastes, too. My younger son has really gotten into Beethoven (which I never listen to) and traditional African music, which he is getting ME into! The older one is a rocker -- Kiss and Green Day and such. Not all of it is my thing, but it's fun to watch. And, they do like my band, of course!
  7. I haven't seen a damn thing this year that wasn't geared toward kids. So, the best thing I've seen is: Ratitoullie
  8. ...and The Specials' "Concrete Jungle" came on the radio. From the rearview mirror, I could see the two of them look at each other wide-eyed. Then, the older one spoke up: "Dad? What is this? Turn it up! This ROCKS!" They're 6 and 8. And yes, I am proud. For many reasons, but that made me smile a really big, goofy grin.
  9. I didn't consider the UK contingency, of course. (Sorry.) Which reminds me that there's another band that UK posters will know, but US folk probably won't: The Move - they later morphed into ELO, but the early stuff (before Jeff Lynne joined the band) is still my favorite. And their leader in those days, Roy Wood released several solo albums that are the epitome of the sublime within the ridiculous. Love that man. You UK folks, of course, know all that stuff, but this is for the benefit of the US folks who don't. EDIT: And you and I pretty much share the same favorite Bonzo moments, joss.
  10. Some nice picks here that I have heard and many that I've heard of, but need to go hear, and several more that I've not heard of that intrigue me. Nice thread. I'll add my 2
  11. I saw them open for Violent Femmes (with Shane) in 1989). It's amazing how well the other guys cover for him when he forgets lyrics or wanders off stage or whatever. At any rate, they're a far superior band WITH him, no matter what he does. Good to see him back.
  12. Only if Willie Nelson is already in the Hall. Yeah, call him country if you want, but he has meant as much to Rock and Roll as any of the other inductees this year.
  13. I love me some YLT, but "Upside Down" or "Pablo & Andrea" would have been my top pix for them.
  14. Didn't Malkmus use Damon Albarn's place, then screw his girlfriend, prompting and inspiring Blur's 13 album? All rumour, of course, but a pretty persistent one. In other words, damn.
  15. I wouldn't either. Not that there's anything wrong with the link, itself, but it is pretty hoary (and whorey) of me to post that. Good for you for sticking to your principles! And thanks for the feedback, caliber.
  16. No, THIS is the best song ever! (Oh yeah, total self-promotional post!)
  17. Brian Eno - Another Green World Start him near the beginning.
  18. Latcho Drom (OST) Los Lobos - Kiko The New York Jazz Ensemble - The Bunk Project (dixieland project feat. Woody Allen) Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World
  19. Go to Geoff Benge's Guitar Shop on Damen (and Addison). Many of the guitars will be out of your range, but he may have some cheapos, too. Also, Geoff is a great guy and a MASTER repairman and luthier. www.geoffbengesguitarshop.com Seriously. Call ahead though, to see if he has anything for you. He just may. And, if he does, it'll be better than anything you'll get for the same price at Guitar Center.
  20. You're in TX. There have to be a billion little, independent guitar stores near you. Go to one of those and pick up a decent used instrument. You can get a good deal there and also build a relationship with somebody who actually KNOWS guitars and will help you out in the future. It's like getting to know a good mechanic that you can trust.
  21. Yeah, it's for WXRT "VIPs". But, you know, that's how I met Louie and Wendy (we all won tix to that Steve Earle show a couple of months ago) and, therefore, found this place to begin with. So, it ain't all bad. Just an FYI for you Chicagoans. And a "NEYAH-NEYAH" to you non-Chicagoans. (sorry.) EDIT: Sorry if this was covered in the "Residency" thread, but I wasn't gonna sift through all 10 pages there.
