I found it. Its so frustrating. As discussed above Neil is forever going on about the sound quality and that an mp3 etc does not give the full picture. However, if the quality of the songs isn't there then its irrelevant. Live a hurricane sounds great on my ipod I know that. Some of these new songs just sound halfed backed and the lyrics (not necessarily ever Neils strong point) are terrible. Give me a great Neil Young song on a poor quality format over his recent releases on 'pono' or vinyl or whatever.

yeah I love that JTE version of Can't Hardly Wait. I got into the Replacements via that cover. The original is now one of my favourite songs period.

Although he started a couple years later I would add Tom Waits. Wait's recent output has been storming, superior to any other oldie out there..even old Bob.

I've never understood this sound quality crusade that Neil is on. My first memory of hearing 'on the beach' was by listening to it through a wall where my flatmate was playing it on an old cassette. If it was Pink Floyd or something I would understand that sound quality is important but Neil sounds just as good on a crappy system. His music, specially crazy horse, is grainy and rough with all the pips left in. They were over in the states a month or so ago, again fan funded I think. They played a couple of shows in NYC which you can download from their website for a small cost.

Invisible Man is an amazing song. Afraid of Sunlight is probably my favourite Hogarth era album. I agree with the Radiohead comment but unfortunatly Marillion still have a serious image problem which restricts them somewhat. In terms of Fish-Era Clutching at Straws is a classic.

Judging by the response first time round I'm assuming there is not much love for Marillion in here. However they have a great new album out 'Sounds that can't be made'. The first song of the record is a 18 minute opus called 'Gaza' which is very powerful and wonderful. Those prog-minded can have a listen via their website below. I think the 'Genesis Live' album was expended in the recent 'Live Boxset'. Suppers Ready and another track were reinstated. 'Three Sides Live' has some pretty good moments especially the 'In The cage' Medley and 'It' at the end.There are a load of good Crimson live records.

The version of 'Happy Man' on Sparklehorse's 'Good Morning Spider' is deliberately sabataged with all manor of radio noises. I think Mark Linous was scared of releasing something vaguely anthemic so he set out so cover it in static and noise. The version that appeared on the Distorted Ghost EP thankfully was the unbutchered version. However, there are some great sound effects and voices on the first two Spraklehorse records, especially vivadisxiesubmarinetransmissionplot.

Its interesting with both Bob Dylan and Neil Young gaining a lot of press with new releases that there seems much less fuss over the new Van Morrison album. It would be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on where Van the man stands in terms of legendary status. For me he is an equal of the other two. Astral Weeks, Veedon Fleece, Into The Music are albums as good as anyone has made over the past fifty or so years. With Vans recent output is seems more middle of the road than Bob or Neil. The later two seem to attract extremes whereas Vans recent albums are neither 'a return to form' or horr

A Crazy Horse comp sounds interesting. The forth archive release was a live album from the '76 Japanese Tour. Just watched the official video for Giant. Similar in style to the Americana videos albeit with a bit of psychadelic images thown in. The whislting in the song is has been stuck in my head for hours.

Massive Attack 'Blue Lines' is due to be re-leased next month. Fully remastered but it doesn't appear to have any additional material etc. The double vinyl set looks nice but not sure I'm gonna shell out £80 for the set. Truly great album. Probably the last time we had a really interesting music scene here in the UK. Everyone was fawning over Brit-Pop but at the same time artists like Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Roni Size etc were putting out really new and exciting music.

My first show was Aerosmith in 1990 on the Pump tour. I know modern day Aerosmith get are a pale imitation of the early 70s incarnation...but it blew my 15 year old mind. I was right down the front and the stage was covered with a big veil. Just before the show started you could see Steven Tyler approach the mike. The veil came down and they started playing 'Rats in the Cellar'. It was great. 'Dream On' was also as massive highlight. A bit cheesy but at the time it was special. The opening band that night were two UK bands called Thunder and the Little Angels if anyone remembers them.

Everlasting Arm/Racing the Tide/Close Encounters is a great run of songs. The versions on the John Peel Sessions album are also stunning. Looking forward to a new Rev album next year.

Really looking forward to the new Jason Lytle solo record that is out in a couple of weeks. I have heard of number of the tracks and they are very strong. Also Lytle has confirmed that a new Grandaddy record maybe in the offing for 2013 which would be great.

I would have to agree with 'Yes'. I used to listen to a lot of their stuff but it really leaves me cold these days. I actually put on the ABWH record recently and it was so much worse than I remembered it to be. I think alot of prog rock/prog metal bands don't do it for me anymore. I used to love Yes, Iron Maiden, Queensryche etc but listening back I just can't love it like I used to. Maybe you grow out of the epic pomp of the music as you get older, I don't know.

Janes Addiction: Somehow when I first heard 'Nothing's Shocking' I couldn't stand it. Early Mercury Rev: Couldn't stand any pre-'Deserter's Songs' albums but love em all now. Actually think 'See You on the Other Side' may be their best record.

Walk Like a Giant does sounds very good. Looking forwarded to the book too. Highest on my list at the momet though is those four 'rebuilt' albums that were due to be released (Chrome Dreams etc). Can't wait for those.

That is quite some site. I'm listenig to an old Genesis radio broadcast at the moment (Chicago 1978). I think, live, they were amazing around this period. I love the Phil era band performing the Gabriel stuff. 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight' is really great. That is quite some site. As mentioned in the other thread I am really getting into King Crimson. An amazing band, especially Red. Their most recent output is really heavy. I always give them a shout out but I really would recommend people check out modern Marillion. They have an new record out in September but recentish albums such as 'Brave', 'Marbles' and 'Afraid of Sunlight' are all really good. Their website is also a thing of beauty with plenty of downloads and merchadise.

I've just started to delve into King Crimson. Always had the Court of the Crimson King album which I liked but not enough to follow it up. However, I just picked up 'Red' and it is amazing. Are there any other people out there listening to this lot and what should I pick up next. I looked on their wiki page and it looked very confusing with sub-divisions, numerous live albums and various projects etc. Thanks team.
