  1. I don't know why Le Batard is hated so much. I actually like him because he doesn't cow tow to people.
  2. I don't know. 1984 was pretty special. As was Denny McLain beating Bob Gibson in the 1968 WS. But as far as the current Tigers are concerned, Illitch already spent pretty heavily on Rodriguez before the lockout -- so the spending spree was under way. I think hiring Dave Dombrowski was the greatest thing that has happened to them.
  3. I can tell you that Sheffield and Ordonez are certainly smiling with the thought of Cabrera hitting behind them. On another note, here's a pretty scathing article about Loria, et al. and his penny-pinching. http://www.miamiherald.com/591/story/334009.html
  4. They talked about it on Tuesday in connection with the Cabrera/Willis deal, but it's dead: Dontrelle to the Mets? No, that's not happening. Not anymore. by Danny Knobler Wednesday December 05, 2007, 9:40 PM NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In the end, the Tigers decided they could afford to keep both Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. And just about everyone else they have, too. But at one point during the negotiations for the huge trade with the Florida Marlins, the Tigers were concerned enough about the finances that they phoned the New York Mets and discussed including them in what would have b
  5. If it's anything like last year, you're not going to be upfront -- it's a seated show with the front section blocked off for members of the school that it benefits. Plus, it's the middle of January in Chicago -- you'll want to be able to actually have fun at the show without worrying about suffering from frost bite.
  6. I'm pretty sure that the matrixes of the March 2007 show have circulated here and on etree (unless, or course, you're just referring to the Hotel S&S show).
  7. Just curious, but how much money do the Marlins put back into the organIzation? It's hard to believe that the Marlins are taking in that much money in revenue sharing, TV, radio, etc. and then re-investing it in "soft areas" such as minor league contracts, coaching staff, or management when the projected payroll of the actual MLB for 2008 may not top $10 million.
  8. I'm sure, as with past shows, we won't disappoint.
  9. No one said that the Marlins take in $60 million in revenue sharing alone. "Jayson Stark said this morning that Florida gets about $60 million in revenue sharing, TV, radio, etc. before they sell a ticket."
  10. Here's an interesting article for you. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writ...ex.html?eref=T1
  11. Wow, that's hard to believe, especially considering that the Twins are by no means guaranteed to compete next year in that division. I still think that he goes, and I still think he goes to the Yankees.
  12. Jayson Stark said this morning that Florida gets about $60 million in revenue sharing, TV, radio, etc. before they sell a ticket. Their payroll this year will be around $10 million at most. There is no way in hell they're spending $50 million on the draft or international players. I'll bet they're not even spending $5 million. Either contract the team or move it. It's a joke.
  13. So why dismantle the teams after they win? Why is that necessary? If the city and ownership can't support the team, move it. The team is bleeding money and is basically a AAA franchise. The fact that there are exactly ZERO players remaining from the 2003 WS team is ridiculous considering it was only 4 years ago. If your fear is that the Tigers no longer have to worry about Inge coming to the plate with men in scoring position when the teams desperately needs a hit only to have him strikeout, I fear as well.
  14. Perhaps Florida should stop being a AAA team for the rest of the league. Seriously, why doesn't Florida just pull the plug and pack their bags? It's embarrassing.
  15. Disagree completely. The reason that you stockpile prospects is to pull off blockbuster trades such as this one. I would trade prospects for proven players any day. And I have yet to see a bad Dave Dombrowski deal. Here's the lineup: CF - Curtis Granderson 2B - Placido Polanco DH - Gary Sheffield 3B - Miguel Cabrera RF - Magglio Ordonez 1B - Carlos Guillen SS - Edgar Renteria C - Pudge/Inge LF - Jacque Jones Like the trade or not, you cannot disagree that the Tigers are infinitely better today as they were on October 1st.
  16. No respect needed. The article was first written at 1:00, and then updated. If you read it, you will notice that it mentions that, as of 6:30 ET, the deal wasn't done. But yes, Danny Knobbler (who is the only trusted source for Detroit Tigers' baseball) is now reporting that it's done.
  17. Evidently this deal is NOT done, but pretty close:
  18. Not long at all. In fact, I think I was in line about 25 minutes before doors opened. My wife Mindy requested (and got) Kamera. Good times.
  19. Piper's Alley has parking (enter on North Ave.). If you have no luck, I believe that you can park in Treasure Island parking lot.
  20. Just listened to last year's show. God it was fun. Although I'm still upset that he didn't play my request of "I Must Be High."
  21. So I'm sitting in Comerica Park for Game 1 of the 2006 World Series. The ESPN Baseball Tonight crew had their setup in centerfield right over my right-hand shoulder. When the game was out of hand, the Tigers put Neifi in at SS as a defensive replacement over Ramon Santiago. With a guy on first base, Pujols hits a screamer up the middle when, out of nowhere, Neifi makes a diving stop and flips it to Polanco to start a doubleplay. I stand up, turn to the ESPN Baseball Tonight crew, and scream at Dusty Baker (who was on the set) over a 1,000 people's heads, "Hey Dusty, that's your boy!" Dust
  22. Agreed. I would have loved to have heard a few more of their shorter songs rather than some of the songs that they lengthened. Also, I thought the mix for both nights was a little off. The guitars and mics were definitely at a lower volume -- for instance, during O' Valencia, all we heard basically were bass and drums. Other than that, I thought both shows were really good. I'm glad I went, because I got to hear a bunch of songs that they don't regularly play in their rotation.
  23. I like this trade. There's a lot of griping going on among Tigers fans about giving up Jurrjens, but you can only stockpile so many young arms. Plus, there's a suspicion that the Tigers may be concerned with his shoulder.
  24. In case anyone is interested, the Decembersists started their new "The Long And The Short Of It" tour last night at the Vic. All of the dates are 2-date swings through cities, with the band playing their longer, epic songs on the first nights and their shorter, poppier songs on the second nights. Here's last night's setlist (on stage at 8:15, off stage at 10:05): Crane Wife 1 & 2 Crane Wife 3 The Island The Bagman's Gambit California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade The Tain I Was Meant For The Stage _________________________ (I missed the first song of the encore, but I didn't recognize
