  1. A husband and father is dead at the very young age of 43. I find it totally reprehensible to dance on someone's grave, regardless of what you thought of him, or, even worse, what you thought of his persona without ever having met him.

I feel terrible for his wife and for his kids, and for him, since he will miss out on the joy of watching them grow up and raising them.

There is a difference between dancing on someone's grave and having an honest discussion about their life and work.

  2. I agree. It matters very little to me what he was like in person. That's not to say that I don't sympathize with the tragedy of someone dying too young and leaving behind a wife and children. I just think that we should be able to have an honest (and respectful) discussion of his life and the impact of his brand of journalism on society. I think the Frum & Salon articles are both honest and respectful. In my opinion, to ignore his flaws would be to ignore the man.

  3. We're referring to a skit on last night's episode. But to your question, they were allowed to play their own songs on SNL (a week or two ago). The Grammy's were not going to allow them to do that.

  4. I don't blame him. They should have been able to play one of the songs that they were nominated for. That Beach Boys thing was a failure. My point was that there would have been room for more musicians to perform if they had cut some of the Foo Fighter fest. I think we saw way more than we needed to of Dave Grohl, I know I did.

  5. I don't mind the Foo Fighters (although I don't own any of their music) but it was kind of ridiculous how many times they performed on the Grammy's. The songs they played were forgettable. In my opinion, they should have made room for Bon Iver to perform one of their songs instead.

  6. I agree. Fly to Albany and rent a car. The plane / train coordination will be more trouble than it's worth, in my opinion. The Amtrak station is not convenient to the airport. Plus, there is no Amtrak station in North Adams. I think the closest is Pittsfield, so you'd still have to get to North Adams from there. I'd be ready to shoot myself at that point.

  7. So incredible. Really makes me wish I was there for that.

That song has always been one of my favorites. I've seen Tweedy do it live a few times solo but I've never been too crazy about that version.

What a way to open a show. Just beautiful.

I actually teared up watching it.

This really is the best peanut brittle ever.

    Old Fashioned Peanut Brittle

    Ingredients:

    • 3 cups sugar
    • 2 cups water
    • 3/4 cup dark corn syrup
    • 3/4 cup light corn syrup
    • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
    • 2 lb salted peanuts
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 Tbsp baking soda
    • Cooking Spray (I use butter flavor)

    Directions:

Combine the sugar, water and both corn syrups in a big soup pot and place over medium heat stirring until the sugar dissolves. Clip a candy thermometer on the side of the pot, then increase the heat to high and boil without stirring until the temperature reaches 260 degrees F. About 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, spray 3 baking sheets with the cooking spray.

When the temperature reaches 260 degrees F, reduce heat to medium-low, add the butter and peanuts and stir constantly so that the peanuts don't ever rest on the bottom of the pan or they will burn. Continue until the temperature reaches 295 degrees F. About 15 minutes.

Turn off the heat, add the vanilla and baking soda. Stir to combine completely. The mixture will puff up at this point. Pour immediately onto the prepared baking sheets and spread into a thin layer. Allow to cool for a few hours and then break into bite sized pieces.

Makes 6-7 gift bags of 10 oz each.
