  1. It's worth seeing if just for the footage of the live solo show at Massey Hall in Toronto. Neil is incredible up there on the stage all by himself. He shows that he's still creative, powerful, relevant and so fucking cool. There are some weird annoying camera angles and it would have been great to see more backstage footage and interview time with Neil but overall it was really good to see.

  2. My husband & I are in the pic that is currently my profile pic. It's a photo that Pat took at the venue in San Sebastian, Spain last Nov. We are sitting on the beach behind the venue. We were so thrilled to be in the photo and thought it was the perfect memento of our trip so I wrote to HQ asking to purchase a copy of the photo. Never heard back. :ohwell I'd still really love to have a copy of it. Maybe I'll try again sometime.

Here's the photo on the band's FB page.

  3. Interesting timing on reviving this, Diane! It just hit me that the other conversation about Wilco's (perceived) creative slide since AGIB, dovetails exactly with the improvement of Jeff's mental and physical health. I know he rejects the idea that his suffering helped create great art, but it's hard to deny that when he was sick, the music was sick! Others have made this conjecture too, but the timing of the two threads was just too juicy not to grab onto.

From the thread about the Fox and Hedgehog theory, Spirit Dove said "One of the main reasons I fell in love with Wilco's music was because of Tweedy's vulnerability in laying his heart bare in the most beautiful, poetic way." She observed that she felt the last three records lack in that sublte and evasive quality, heart. I would never in a million years wish that kind of suffering on Jeff ever again, but perhaps it did contribute a dark poetry to the music that rarely shows its head these days. (OSM, I think, is a beautiful exception).

Anyway, fascinating stuff to ponder on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.

And what about Hell is Chrome? Fucking amazing song.

I agree about OSM being an exception but when I thought about that, I realized that he was laying someone else's story bare so the vulnerability part still really wasn't there. In some ways, yes but not totally.

I completely agree about Hell is Chrome too. AGIB is holding up as one hell of a record.

On a side note, I'm also a migraine sufferer but have them managed pretty well with meds.

  4. I read this quote yesterday morning:

“He who works with his hands is a laborer.

He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.

He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.

    St. Francis of Assisi

...and then I got in the car for a long drive and was listening to my Wilco Favorites playlist which has a bit of everything from their catalogue including the Mermaid records. So I was hearing songs from the early 90's side by side with songs from TWL. I started thinking about that quote and thinking that what's missing for me on the records from SBS onward is heart. The recent songs are crafted well and the band has never performed better live but something is missing from the last few records. One of the main reasons I fell in love with Wilco's music was because of Tweedy's vulnerability in laying his heart bare in the most beautiful, poetic way. I think maybe that component has been missing for a while.

  5. No to get too far away from the original thought in this thread, but the freak out section of Via Chicago has always made me think of turbulence on a plane. Stupid, I suppose, I guess the word "Via" puts me in a air traveling frame of reference.

I like this. Never thought of it that way.

  6. I think they should change the way they play Impossible Germany live as well. That Nels solo in the middle is getting a little stale. Come on people, that's the song. It's great the way it is. They should open every concert with it IMO.

Well they have changed arrangements on songs in the past so it's not such a crazy idea. For example, Spiders is a much better song with the new arrangement, IMO. Same for Laminated Cat. Change can be good.

  7. The freakout part on the album, though, is far more subdued than it is when they play it live in its current iteration. On the record, there's lots of feedback and drums but the melodic part carries more weight, it would be nice to have them play a kinder gentler Via Chicago live once in a while.

Yes, totally agree...or even if the current version had just ONE of those loud freakouts it would have impact and still be beautiful.

  8. I think it's time for a new live version of Via Chicago.

The current version is/was great for a while but I'm feeling like it's time they switch that up a bit...or maybe I just need to go to fewer shows :yeaahh

  9. You can purchase the mp3 (or lossless) of the Geneva show - the performance includes Laminated Cat and an acoustic version of Spiders.

    Below is the Wilco site

    Download discusion is here:

Thanks for this info. Do you know if the download comes as 1 track or does each song have it's own track? I'd pay the $9 bucks for these two songs but I wouldn't want to listen to the whole show every time I want to hear them.
